Arkane\u2019s Deathloop<\/em><\/strong> is shaping up to be one of the studio\u2019s most ambitious releases. The\u00a0upcoming\u00a0first-person action game\u00a0is\u00a0set in a time loop, combining single player and multiplayer elements. One\u00a0player will be tasked with assassinating a group of NPCs before the loop resets, while the second player will hunt\u00a0down the first (if in MP).<\/p>\n

Deathloop<\/em><\/a>\u2019s concept presents a lot of challenges, but those challenges\u00a0aren\u2019t just limited to its gameplay. Based on what\u2019s been revealed so far, Deathloop<\/em>\u2019s premise will raise a lot of questions that its story will have to answer.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Arkane has revealed several details about Deathloop<\/em>\u2019s story. The main character is a man named Colt, AKA “The Captain”<\/a>, who is stuck in a time loop on the island of Blackreef. The island was bought in the 1960s by a group of eight young self-proclaimed \u201cVisionaries\u201d from an organization named the AEON Program. These Visionaries are using the strange temporal phenomena on the island to achieve a form of immortality by controlling the time loop.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

To break Deathloop<\/em>\u2019s time loop, Colt must kill all of the Visionaries on the island before the day resets. If even one Visionary survives, they are able to reset the loop, bringing everyone back to life. The Visionaries are guarded by their\u00a0followers, known as \u201cEternalists.” While Colt is hunting down his main targets, he too is being hunted by a woman named Juliana \u201cJules” Blake<\/a>. Jules\u00a0wants to protect the loop and is optionally controlled by a second player.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In the Deathloop<\/em> gameplay trailer<\/a> \u201cTwo Birds One Stone,\u201d it\u2019s explained that Colt\u00a0doesn’t have time to kill all eight of his targets before the loop resets without manipulating other events to get targets in the same places. In the trailer, for example, Colt sabotages the work of a scientist Visionary named Egor Serling to prevent a breakthrough that would otherwise stop Egor from accepting an invitation to another target\u2019s party that evening.<\/p>\n

Egor clearly makes his breakthrough again every time the loop resets, which means that he is likely unable to carry over knowledge between loops. It\u2019s clear that Colt is able to remember previous loops, and it seems likely that Jules can as well, which might explain her unique motivation to protect the loop. What\u00a0Arkane<\/a> will need to explain is why the AEON Program members don\u2019t seem able to remember previous loops, and why they would consider repeating the same day with no memory of previous loops immortality.<\/p>\n

It’s possible that the AEON Program\u2019s project went wrong in some way, and that only Colt and Jules are experiencing the loop as intended. It\u2019s also possible that the Eternalist cult\u00a0and the\u00a0Visionaries believe that repeating the same day without memories is a form of immortal bliss, allowing them to live guilt-free. Whatever the characters’ views on it, it remains unclear why the majority of Deathloop<\/em>\u2019s villains<\/a> aren\u2019t able to remember previous loops.<\/p>\n

Deathloop<\/em>‘s story<\/a>\u00a0will also need to explain why Jules wants to protect the time loop if that time loop also means that she is fated to spend an eternity hunting down Colt. While Colt might be able to escape and live a normal life away from Blackreef, Jules ensures that Colt is also effectively immortal by protecting the loop\u00a0, which means that she’ll have to keep hunting him\u00a0until he eventually succeeds.<\/p>\n

From what\u2019s been revealed so far, it seems like Jules and the Visionaries are doomed from the start. Their immortality relies on bringing Colt back to life, giving him infinite attempts to kill them and destroy Deathloop<\/em>‘s time loop<\/a>, seemingly making his eventual success an inevitability.\u00a0One the one hand, addressing\u00a0the big questions raised by Deathloop<\/em>‘s premise presents a challenge for Arkane. On the other, if Deathloop<\/em>\u00a0explores the implications of its premise in full,\u00a0the game\u2019s story could have some mind-blowing twists in store when it comes out this May.<\/p>\n

Deathloop<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0releases\u00a0on May 21, 2021 for PC and PlayStation 5.<\/p>\n
