Elijah Wood, who played Frodo Baggins in Peter Jackson\u2019s Lord of the Rings<\/a>\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>movie trilogy, has some strong opinions with regards to the title of Amazon\u2019s upcoming series adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien’s fantasy adventure franchise. The actor\u00a0says the Amazon series shouldn’t be called Lord of the Rings<\/em>\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>because it takes place a millennia before the events of\u00a0The Hobbit<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Amazon\u2019s Lord of the Rings<\/em> series is set in the Second Age of Middle-earth and is considered a prequel to Tolkien’s\u00a0Lord of the Rings\u00a0<\/em>and The Hobbit<\/em>. The Lord of the Rings\u00a0<\/em>film and novel trilogy<\/a> took place near the end of the Third Age of the fictional world of Middle-earth. For context, the Second Age spans 3,441 years and it was during this time when Sauron creates the One Ring to rule all the other Rings of Power.<\/p>\n

While speaking with Empire, Wood voiced his confusion\u00a0about the title of Amazon\u2019s upcoming show. \u201cI find it very bizarre that they\u2019re calling it\u00a0Lord of the Rings<\/em>\u00a0as a shorthand because it\u2019s not\u00a0Lord of the Rings<\/em>!\u201d he said. \u201cIt takes place in the Second Age of Middle-earth.\u201d This isn\u2019t the first time the 40-year-old actor\u00a0has talked about the prequel\u2019s unofficial title. Last summer, he said he found it \u201cslightly misleading\u201d because the material exists chronologically further back \u201cin history in the lore of\u00a0Lord of the Rings\u201d <\/em>and long before characters like Bilbo or Frodo<\/a> were even born.<\/p>\n

Despite his gripe with the show\u2019s title, Wood said he\u2019d \u201cabsolutely\u201d be interested in joining the show if it made sense and was \u201corganic to what they\u2019re doing.\u201d Amazon spent $250 million to buy the rights to the franchise, which makes it the most expensive TV series ever. For perspective, Peter Jackson\u2019s Lord of the Rings<\/em><\/a> trilogy has a combined budget of $281 million and grossed $2.92 billion worldwide.<\/p>\n

Godzilla vs. Kong<\/em>\u00a0screenwriters J.D. Payne\u00a0and\u00a0Patrick McKay\u00a0are developing the high-priced series.\u00a0Meanwhile, J.A. Bayona\u00a0(Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom<\/em>) is directing the first two episodes. The large ensemble cast includes<\/a> Game of Thrones star Robert Aramayo, Markella Kavenagh, and Maxim Baldry (Skins<\/em>). The Lord of the Rings<\/em>\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>series resumed filming in New Zealand last September after production was halted due to the pandemic.<\/p>\n

The Lord of the Rings<\/strong>\u00a0<\/em>series is expected to premiere in 2021 on Amazon Prime Video.<\/p>\n
