Joaquin Phoenix has officially set his first acting project since 2019\u2019s\u00a0Joker<\/strong><\/em><\/a>. The acclaimed actor is teaming up\u00a0with Midsommar<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0Hereditary<\/em>\u00a0writer-director Ari Aster for\u00a0Disappointment Blvd<\/em>.<\/p>\n

In November, it was reported that Phoenix and Aster were looking to collaborate on a surrealist horror-themed film<\/a> called\u00a0Beau Is Afraid. <\/em>Now, Deadline\u00a0<\/em>has confirmed that the project will be called\u00a0Disappointment Blvd<\/em>. While specific details have been kept tight-lipped, the film is described as \u201can intimate, decades-spanning portrait of one of the most successful entrepreneurs of all time.\u201d\u00a0Aster has previously stated that his next film would be four-hours long. He described it as an adults-online \u201czonkey nightmare comedy.\u201d The director didn\u2019t specifically name the project, so it\u2019s unclear if he was speaking of\u00a0Disappointment Blvd<\/em>.<\/p>\n

A24 has signed on to finance and produce\u00a0Disappointment Blvd<\/em>. Aster previously worked with the studio on\u00a0Hereditary<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0Midsommer,\u00a0<\/em>which are his only features to date. Both films earned positive reviews from critics and garnered buzz for their shocking supernatural horror elements<\/a>. Hereditary <\/em>premiered in 2018 and became A24\u2019s highest-grossing film worldwide, earning $80 million on just a $10 million budget. The Tony Collette-led film followed a family haunted by mysterious force after the death of their grandmother.<\/p>\n

Phoenix has garnered acclaim over the years for his work in\u00a0The Master<\/em>,\u00a0Her<\/em>,\u00a0Gladiator<\/em>, and\u00a0Walk the Line<\/em>. The actor received wide-acclaim for his portrayal of Arthur Fleck\/Joker in Todd Philips\u2019 re-imaged origin story<\/a> of the iconic DC character. Despite dividing critics,\u00a0Joker<\/em>\u00a0became the highest-grossing R-rated film in history by making over $1 billion worldwide. It received 11 Oscar nominations, with Phoenix winning his first Best Actor award. Since the film’s release, rumors of a potential sequel have swirled. Phillips has previously said he’s “open to the idea” and would love to work with Phoenix again.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0Joker<\/em>\u00a0star has a busy year in front of him, as he is also slated to play 19th-century French emperor Napoleon Bonaparte in\u00a0Kitbag. <\/em>Directed by Alien<\/em> helmer Ridley Scott<\/a>,\u00a0the film is being made for Apple TV+ and will mark the first time Phoenix and Scott have worked together since 2000\u2019s\u00a0Gladiator<\/em>. According to Deadline, Phoenix will film Aster\u2019s project first since Scott is currently prepping his crime thriller\u00a0Gucci<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Phoenix will next be seen in Mike Mills\u2019\u00a0C\u2019mon C\u2019mon,\u00a0<\/em>which was filmed back in 2019. Mills previously directed critically acclaimed movies\u00a020th Century Women<\/em><\/a>,\u00a0Beginners<\/em>, and\u00a0Thumbsucker<\/em>. His upcoming Indie follows an artist (Phoenix) who forms a bond with his nephew over a cross-country trip.<\/p>\n

Disappointment Blvd<\/strong><\/em>.<\/strong>\u2019s\u00a0release date hasn\u2019t been announced.<\/p>\n
