Sure, exclusives may have made most of the headlines during 2020, but that&#8217;s not to say that there weren&#8217;t plenty of great cross-platform titles as well. These games can be played on at least three of the four main gaming platforms and can hold their own against most of the big budget exclusives despite typically costing far less to produce.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">10 <\/span>Huntdown<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static0.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/8-Huntdown.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>With its striking\u00a0and stylized visuals and its arcade style controls, <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/huntdown\/\"><em>Huntdown<\/em><\/a> is a celebration of a bygone era of gaming that many just aren&#8217;t quite ready to let go of.\u00a0Despite it being\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/80s-kid-games\/\">an ode to the past<\/a> though, there are elements and ideas here that feel very much at home in the modern gaming landscape.<\/p>\n<p>The controls are surprisingly tight and the soundtrack sounds like something <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/best-video-games-set-in-the-80s\/\">straight out of the eighties<\/a>. Although they could perhaps do with a bit more variety, the levels are well designed and are complimented by some fantastic boss fights that are sure to get players&#8217; hearts beating a little faster. It&#8217;s fun, it&#8217;s exciting and it&#8217;s deserving of\u00a0a lot more attention and praise than it&#8217;s so far received.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">9 <\/span>Desperados III<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static3.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Desperados-III-Old-West-Fire-Attack.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/desperados\/\"><em>Desperados<\/em><\/a> series has had its fair share of ups and downs over the years, but <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/desperados-3\/\"><em>Desperados III<\/em><\/a> is definitely a high point for the series. It serves as a prequel to the original game, taking a deep dive into the origin of series protagonist John Cooper while also introducing\u00a0several interesting new characters for players to control.<\/p>\n<p>The story itself may not be all that compelling, but the writing and voice acting are fantastic throughout. The playable characters are all really well fleshed out\u00a0too and their special abilities help to make each one of them feel truly unique. It&#8217;s not <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/ps4-easy-platinum-trophies\/\">the easiest game in the world<\/a>, but, for those who like a challenge, it&#8217;s a solid real-time tactics game that&#8217;s more than worthy of the <em>Desperados<\/em> name.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">8 <\/span>Streets Of Rage 4<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static1.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/Streets-of-Rage-4-co-op-Cropped.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>Beat &#8217;em up games may not be <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/capcom-beat-em-up-arcade-games-ranked\/\">as popular or as prevalent as they once were<\/a>, but for as long as games like <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/streets-of-rage-4\/\"><em>Streets of Rage 4 <\/em><\/a>continue to be released, the genre will never truly die. It&#8217;s the epitome of what a modern beat &#8217;em up game should be and delivers on all fronts; particularly when it comes to rewarding skill and making the player feel like <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/best-badass-action-movie-one-liners-1980s-ranked\/\">the biggest badass alive<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"related-single\">RELATED:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/best-xbox-game-pass-titles-metacritic\/\">10 Top Rated Game Pass Games, Ranked According To Metacritic<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>More than a quarter of a century\u00a0has passed since the original <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/streets-of-rage\/\"><em>Streets of Rage<\/em><\/a> trilogy and yet very little has really changed here. Sure, the game looks a thousand times better than its predecessors and it controls a lot better too, but all of the fundamentals have largely been left untouched. <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/streets-of-rage-four-great-comeback-stuck-in-past\/\">Some might see this as a bad thing<\/a>, but, as the old saying goes, why fix what isn&#8217;t broken?<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">7 <\/span>Risk Of Rain 2<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static3.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/Risk-Of-Rain-2-Mercenary-Overlooking-Enemies-on-Pedestal.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>While\u00a0sticking with a tried and tested formula does often yield the best results, starting from scratch can sometimes be just as effective. <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/risk-of-rain-2\/\"><em>Risk of Rain 2<\/em><\/a> is a great example of this, with Hopoo Games&#8217;\u00a0decision to bring the series into the third dimension ultimately leading to one of <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/best-roguelike-rpgs-ranked\/\">the best roguelike games ever made<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Many of the elements that made the original so enjoyable can still be found here, but the leap to 3D\u00a0adds a new dimension to these mechanics figuratively as well as literally. Exploration and combat both feel far more exciting while the\u00a0improved graphical fidelity helps to differentiate enemies a little better too. One thing that hasn&#8217;t changed too much though is the game&#8217;s intense difficulty, making it <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/difficult-games-ps4-generation-ranked\/\">a great title for those who love a good challenge<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">6 <\/span>Kentucky Route Zero<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static1.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/Kentucky-Route-Zero-TV-Edition.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>Thanks in large to <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/telltale-best-games-metacritic\/\">the many great Telltale Games series<\/a> and the continued efforts of <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/shigeru-miyamoto-9-hugely-influential-figures-gaming\/\">people like Tim Schafer<\/a>, there has been a real resurgence in the popularity of point and click titles over the past decade or so. <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/kentucky-route-zero\/\"><em>Kentucky Route Zero<\/em><\/a> is one of the best\u00a0titles to have released during that time and serves as proof that there&#8217;s still a place for the genre in the modern age.<\/p>\n<p>With its stylized visuals and beautiful soundtrack, it feels like the natural\u00a0successor to <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/best-point-click-games-hold-up-today\/\">the\u00a0wonderful\u00a0point and click games that\u00a0so effectively punctuated the end of the twentieth century<\/a>. Where it really shines though is through its storytelling, which rewards the inquisitive and provides a gripping\u00a0and thought-provoking narrative from start to finish.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">5 <\/span>F1 2020<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static3.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/F1-2020-Full-Race.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>Players and critics often bemoan <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/ea-fifa-best-worst-games\/\">the lack of innovation in annual sports simulation franchises<\/a>, but that&#8217;s not a criticism that could really be levied at Codemasters. The developer has always looked to push the boundaries with\u00a0its <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/best-racing-arcade-simulators\/\">many racing sim games<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/f1-2020\/\"><em>F1 2020<\/em><\/a>\u00a0is yet another prime example of this.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"related-single\">RELATED:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/racing-games-with-best-customization\/\">10 Racing Games With The Best Vehicle Customization<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>For the first time in a Formula 1 game, players are able to create their very own team from the ground up. This includes everything from finding sponsors and parts suppliers to building new facilities that will help to improve the team&#8217;s performance. There&#8217;s also the usual bump in visual fidelity, with this years entry really pushing the boat out with its <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/photo-realistic-horror-games-pt-similar\/\">photo-realistic graphics<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">4 <\/span>Tony Hawk&#8217;s Pro Skater 1 + 2<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static1.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/tony-hawk-pro-skater-1-2.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>Many classic gaming franchises\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/long-forgotten-franchises-returned-2020\/\">made their returns in 2020<\/a>, but none did so quite as spectacularly as <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/tony-hawks-pro-skater\/\"><em>Tony Hawk&#8217;s<\/em><\/a>. Rather than yet another new entry, however, the developers instead opted to <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/2020-best-video-game-remakes-metacritic\/\">remake the series&#8217; first two titles from the ground up<\/a>. The resulting\u00a0game is not just one of the best <em>Tony Hawk&#8217;s<\/em> games, but one of the\u00a0finest sports simulation games ever released.<\/p>\n<p>While it doesn&#8217;t play exactly like the originals, <em>Pro Skater 1 + 2<\/em> is about as faithful as it could be without feeling dated. The visuals are strong throughout and the controls are incredibly responsive; allowing players to pull off some insane combos if they know what they&#8217;re doing. For fans of skateboarding games, <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/skateboarding-games-best-according-metacritic\/\">they really don&#8217;t come much better than this<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">3 <\/span>Yakuza: Like A Dragon<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static3.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/yakuza-like-a-dragon-party.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>Replacing Kiryu was always going to be a tall order for the team over at\u00a0Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio, but <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/yakuza-like-a-dragon\/\"><em>Yakuza: Like a Dragon<\/em><\/a>&#8216;s main protagonist Ichiban is a more than capable stand in. He&#8217;s not the only new addition to the series either, with <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/yakuza-like-dragon-best-worst-things\/\">the game&#8217;s combat system being completely revamped<\/a> to include numerous elements from <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/snes-best-action-rpg-turn-based-rpg\/\">some of the classic turn-based RPGs of old<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Though a little jarring at first, it&#8217;s a system that works surprisingly well and is supplemented nicely with the many environmental weapons scattered throughout the game. The story&#8217;s not too bad either, but it&#8217;s through the <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/yakuza-like-a-dragon-mini-games\/\">plethora of minigames and side activities<\/a> that the game really justifies its price tag. As well as <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/sega-yakuza-series-best-worst-minigames\/\">the many returning classics<\/a>, the game introduces several new activities including go-karting\u00a0and business management.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">2 <\/span>Doom Eternal<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static2.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/doom-eternal-slayer.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>Following <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/best-arena-shooters-ranked\/\">the hugely successful 2016 reboot<\/a>, expectations were high for <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/doom-eternal\/\"><em>Doom Eternal<\/em><\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/id-software-best-games-metacritic\/\">As\u00a0has so often been the case over the years<\/a>, the team at id Software didn&#8217;t disappoint. The game builds\u00a0on the foundations laid by its predecessor to great effect and just might be the very best Doom game ever made.<\/p>\n<p>The level design is vastly improved while the grappling hook adds an entirely new dynamic to the way in which players can traverse them. There&#8217;s also <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/doom-eternal-demons-scariest-horrific\/\">a wider variety of demons to slay<\/a> and some wonderful animations when doing so. It&#8217;s one of the most well optimized games to have released in recent years and although <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/doom-eternal-things-gamers-love-hate\/\">the multiplayer mode falls a little short<\/a>, its single player experience is right up there with <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/doom-eternal-games-like-fps\/\">the very best<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">1 <\/span>Ori And The Will Of The Wisps<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static0.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/ori-will-wisps-Cropped.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/ori-and-the-blind-forest\/\"><em>Ori and the Blind Forest<\/em><\/a> surprised a lot of people when it released\u00a0back in 2015 thanks to its stunning visuals and wonderful gameplay. Its sequel, on the other hand, came not as a surprise, but instead as a confirmation\u00a0of the brilliance of the development team at Moon Studios.<\/p>\n<p>At its core, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/ori-and-the-will-of-the-wisps\/\">Ori and the Will of the Wisps<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>is everything that a sequel should be. <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/video-game-graphics-art-direction-2020-best\/\">It looks better<\/a>, the combat system has been improved and <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/best-innovative-indie-platformers-games\/\">there are some new gameplay mechanics<\/a> thrown in there as well for good measure.
