Blizzard\u00a0officially unveiled Diablo 2: Resurrected<\/strong><\/em> at the online-only version of Blizzcon 2021. Originally released\u00a0in 2000,\u00a0Diablo 2 quickly became an ARPG classic and\u00a0fans\u00a0have been expectantly waiting for its remastered edition.\u00a0Releasing sometime later this year on PC, Nintendo Switch, PS5, PS4, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X,\u00a0Diablo\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>fans will have plenty to look forward to with the\u00a0news of Diablo 2: Resurrected<\/em> and Diablo 4<\/em>.<\/p>\n

While\u00a0Diablo 2: Resurrected<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>has no set release date, fans are undoubtedly excited to immerse themselves in a brand new isometric ARPG once again.\u00a0Diablo\u00a0<\/em>has become the face of the\u00a0genre through its deep loot systems, dark fantasy\u00a0setting, and rich combat system. Although no other game perfectly captures the magic of the\u00a0Diablo\u00a0<\/em>formula, there are plenty of other fantastic ARPG titles for fans to try while they wait.<\/p>\n

Diablo\u00a0<\/em>fans who find themselves searching for a challenge should look no further than\u00a0Path of Exile. <\/em>The most popular alternative to the\u00a0Diablo\u00a0<\/em>series,\u00a0Path of Exile <\/em>is a free-to-play isometric ARPG that was conceived as a spiritual successor to the original\u00a0Diablo 2.\u00a0<\/em>Featuring a gigantic passive skill tree, unique currency system, and an extensive endgame,\u00a0Path of Exile\u00a0<\/em>is the perfect game for any\u00a0Diablo\u00a0<\/em>fans\u00a0who enjoy investing time<\/a> into learning mechanics and boss fights.<\/p>\n

Though the difficulty curve\u00a0may be daunting at first,\u00a0Path of Exile\u00a0<\/em>offers one of the most rewarding experiences<\/a> in the genre due its consistent update schedule and the fact that seasonal changes become integrated permanently. With a huge overhaul titled\u00a0Path of Exile 2\u00a0<\/em>in the works, there has never been a better time for\u00a0Diablo\u00a0<\/em>fans to jump into\u00a0Path of Exile\u00a0<\/em>and see what it has to offer. In particular, fans who are excited about\u00a0Diablo 2: Resurrected\u00a0<\/em>should find Path of Exile<\/em>\u00a0familiar given how much inspiration it\u00a0<\/em>takes from the original game.<\/p>\n

Although\u00a0Grim Dawn\u00a0<\/em>is one of the lesser known loot-based ARPGs, it offers complex character development, quests with choice and consequence, and even mechanics such as rogue-like dungeons. Similar to\u00a0Path of Exile,\u00a0<\/em>Grim Dawn\u00a0<\/em>was originally designed as a spiritual successor to\u00a0Diablo<\/em> 2<\/em>,\u00a0<\/em>and as a love letter to the genre as a whole. Often touted as the midpoint between\u00a0Diablo<\/em><\/a>\u00a0<\/i>and\u00a0Path of Exile, Grim Dawn\u00a0<\/em>balances enough\u00a0difficulty to encourage learning but it never feels overwhelming or punishing for the player.<\/p>\n

One of the most interesting aspects of\u00a0Grim Dawn\u00a0<\/em>is its dual class system. Although there are only a set number of classes, they can be combined together to obtain unique skills and modifiers.\u00a0Each class combination features different builds and playstyles\u00a0and\u00a0they\u00a0are all connected to the lore in some way. Developed by the same team behind the ARPG classic Titan Quest, Grim Dawn <\/em>uses the gameplay mechanics that veterans of the genre are familiar with and improves upon it.\u00a0Players\u00a0excited for\u00a0Diablo 2: Resurrected<\/em><\/a>\u00a0<\/i>will find that\u00a0Grim Dawn\u00a0<\/em>is a great alternative while they wait.<\/p>\n

Diablo\u00a0<\/em>fans looking for a change of setting<\/a> or a more light-hearted approach to the genre should give\u00a0The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing\u00a0<\/em>a try. Based on the novel\u00a0Dracula<\/em>,\u00a0the game features Van Helsing, the son of legendary vampire hunter Abraham Van Helsing from the book. Set in a gothic noir setting of 19th century Europe,\u00a0The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing\u00a0<\/em>features a familiar loot system for\u00a0Diablo\u00a0<\/em>fans and is modelled after old-school ARPGs.<\/p>\n

One of the more unique aspects of\u00a0The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing\u00a0<\/em>is the humor and interesting characterizations. With frequent Easter eggs and pop culture references, the game shifts away from the gloomy undertones of most APRGs in the genre, and\u00a0offers humorous character interactions. The atmosphere and level design are\u00a0similar to\u00a0Diablo<\/em><\/a>\u00a0<\/i>but it manages to feel a little lighter in tone. Players looking to experience the game should try\u00a0The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing: Final Cut\u00a0<\/em>as it includes the entire trilogy along with some major fixes from the original games.<\/p>\n

For many fans of isometric ARPGs,\u00a0Torchlight 2<\/em><\/a>\u00a0<\/i>was\u00a0a great\u00a0Diablo\u00a0<\/em>alternative with its casual approach to the genre and strong multiplayer mechanics. Featuring a much lighter tone and colorful world than most other isometric ARPGs, the\u00a0Torchlight\u00a0<\/em>series is\u00a0easy for new players to jump into and offers more casual\u00a0mechanics such as fishing. Despite its simplicity, the core gameplay loop is\u00a0addicting and\u00a0Diablo\u00a0<\/em>fans looking for a more relaxed experience will find plenty to love here.<\/p>\n

The release of\u00a0Torchlight 3<\/em><\/a>\u00a0<\/i>has been met with mediocre reviews, and unfortunately has a number of problems that will have to resolved in future updates. Thankfully though,\u00a0Torchlight 2\u00a0<\/em>manages to hold up extremely well to this day, and\u00a0Diablo\u00a0<\/em>fans should give it a try if they ever find themselves looking for an easier game. With a powerful mod integration system,\u00a0Torchlight 2\u00a0<\/em>is able to offer a great experience for fans of isometric ARPGs despite being originally released in 2012. Along with a vast overworld and the ability to play with others from around the world,\u00a0Torchlight 2\u00a0<\/em>is still\u00a0one of the best experiences that the genre has to offer.<\/p>\n

Despite the fact that\u00a0Hades\u00a0<\/em>isn’t a traditional loot-based ARPG like other titles in the genre, it shares a number of similarities. Much like\u00a0Diablo, Hades\u00a0<\/em>is an isometric ARPG where players must fight their way through enemies and gain upgrades in order to progress. However,\u00a0Hades\u00a0<\/em>also features a number of rogue-like mechanics<\/a> such as permadeath and randomized runs. The combat system is also much more fleshed out compared to other isometric ARPGs and\u00a0Hades\u00a0<\/em>also features a compelling narrative.<\/p>\n

While\u00a0Diablo\u00a0<\/em>typically leans into its RPG aspects of the genre more,\u00a0Hades\u00a0<\/em>is more focused on the action aspects. Featuring a dynamic and fluid combat system,\u00a0Hades\u00a0<\/em>is\u00a0a great alternative for\u00a0Diablo\u00a0<\/em>fans who are looking for a more intricate approach to fights. Moreover,\u00a0Hades\u00a0<\/em>embraces an easy to learn but difficult to master<\/a> concept through mechanics such as itemization which allows both newcomers and veterans of the genre to enjoy the experience. Although the rogue-like mechanics place it closer towards the hardcore mode of\u00a0Diablo\u00a0<\/em>games,\u00a0Hades\u00a0<\/em>offers a great ARPG experience and one of the best narratives in the genre.<\/p>\n
