Filmmaker Chlo\u00e9 Zhao has been sharing new details\u00a0about her forthcoming cosmic blockbuster,\u00a0Eternals<\/strong><\/em><\/a>.\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>In a recent interview,\u00a0Zhao discussed what it was like working with Marvel Studios and how Leonardo DiCaprio’s The Revenant <\/em>inspired her MCU\u00a0blockbuster.<\/p>\n

Zhao has been answering questions regarding\u00a0Eternals\u00a0<\/em>during the press junket for her Golden Globe-nominated movie<\/a>,\u00a0Nomadland<\/em>. The 38-year-old Zhao edited the Marvel Studios film during the release of\u00a0<\/em>the critically acclaimed indie, which stars Frances McDormand as a woman who leaves her home to travel the American West after the Great Recession.\u00a0Eternals<\/em>, on the other hand,\u00a0<\/em>features\u00a0<\/em>a group of immortal heroes who must reunite to take down the Deviants after secretly living on Earth for over 7000 years. The loaded ensemble includes Angelina Jolie, Salma Hayek, Kumail Nanjiani,\u00a0<\/em>as well as\u00a0Game of Thrones\u00a0<\/em>stars\u00a0Richard Madden and Kit Harington. Jolie has stated that she joined the project because of Zhao\u2019s \u201cvision\u201d and the film’s focus on expanding the ways superheroes are viewed.<\/p>\n

While Wong Kar-wai\u2019s\u00a0Happy Together<\/em>\u00a0inspired\u00a0Nomadland<\/em>, Zhao told The Playlist\u00a0<\/em>that she drew on 2015\u2019s\u00a0The Reven<\/em>a<\/em>nt<\/em>\u00a0for\u00a0Eternals. <\/em>Directed by\u00a0Alejandro Gonz\u00e1lez I\u00f1\u00e1rritu<\/a>\u00a0and starring Leonardo DiCaprio, The Revenant<\/em>\u00a0drew attention for shooting in natural light and its gruesome grizzly-bear attack scene. Similarly,\u00a0Eternals<\/em>\u00a0was shot on location and avoided the use of CG backgrounds and sound stages. However, The Revenant<\/em> had a particular impact on how Zhao chose to approach the action sequences of Eternals<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Noting that there were multiple films that inspired her work on Eternals<\/em>,\u00a0 Zhao recounted how the Academy Award-winning<\/a> Revenant<\/em>\u00a0specifically inspired the “great team” she worked with on the Marvel Studios epic. “\u2018The Revenant\u2019 is a film that I love so much. And I think we\u2019ve watched \u2018The Revenant\u2019 so many times, every meeting when we come to our action sequences because most of those sequences are shot on location.” Zhao said. “And I love how immersive and the way how you feel the dash and sequences in \u2018The Revenant.\u2019 It\u2019s definitely a film that we aspire to. And Marvel really, really supported that idea and really went for it.”<\/p>\n

Due to the pandemic, numerous MCU projects were forced to shift their release dates. Marvel Studios’ initial plan was to release\u00a0Eternals<\/em>\u00a0in theatres last November, before\u00a0WandaVision<\/em>. Zhao noted that having the Disney Plus show released before\u00a0Eternals<\/em>\u00a0put a lot of pressure on her film. However, she\u2019s\u00a0“very happy” for WandaVision\u00a0<\/em>and glad that the show has found success<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Zhao has another big-budget film in the pipeline. Earlier this year, it was reported that the filmmaker would write, direct and produce a futuristic Sci-Fi Western version of\u00a0Dracula<\/em><\/a>\u00a0for Universal Pictures. Zhao stated in a press release that the concept of vampires and what they embody have always fascinated her. Bram Stoker first created Dracula<\/em> in his 1897 gothic horror novel and numerous high-profile actors have played the vampire over the past century. Universal has yet to announce who will play the titular role in Zhao\u2019s new take.<\/p>\n

Marvel Studios\u2019\u00a0<\/strong>Eternals<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0is set to premiere in theatres on November 5, 2021.<\/p>\n
