Tom Holland may\u00a0be best known for his role as Peter Parker in Marvel Studios’ Spider-Man<\/em> franchise, but he once had his eyes on another Disney film series. Holland recently revealed that he auditioned for a role in Star Wars<\/em><\/strong><\/a>, but didn\u2019t get the part because he couldn\u2019t stop laughing.<\/p>\n

During an interview with Backstage<\/em>,\u00a0<\/em>\u00a0Holland explained that he was \u201cfour of five auditions in\u201d for the role\u00a0of ex-stormtrooper Finn in the first of Disney\u2019s<\/em>\u00a0Star Wars<\/em> sequel trilogy,\u00a0The Force Awakens.<\/em>\u00a0The Spider-Man<\/em> star recounts doing a scene where he was exchanging dialogue with the droid character BB8 who, like many Star Wars<\/em> droids<\/a>, only communicates with gibberish beeping sounds.\u00a0According to Holland, BB8\u2019s lines were being read by a lady who Holland describes as a \u201cdrone.\u201d Despite his best efforts, the\u00a0actor says he just couldn\u2019t get through the audition without laughing. \u201cI found it so funny. And I felt really bad,” Holland explained, “because she was trying really hard to be a convincing android or drone or whatever they\u2019re called. Yeah, I obviously didn’t get the part. That wasn\u2019t my best moment.\u201d<\/p>\n

The role of Finn would eventually go to actor John Boyega, who, after appearing\u00a0in all three sequel movies,\u00a0expressed criticism of Disney\u2019s handling of black\u00a0characters in Star Wars<\/em><\/a>. In a candid interview with GQ<\/em>, Boyega stated\u00a0in regards to Disney\u2019s<\/em> handling of Finn, \u201cdo not bring out a Black character, market them to be much more important in the franchise than they are and then have them pushed to the side. It\u2019s not good. I\u2019ll say it straight up.\u201d\u00a0Boyega has\u00a0also described being attached to the role of Finn\u00a0as being placed in \u201cluxury jail\u201d, saying he was \u201cstarved\u201d and\u00a0unable to pursue other projects due to the big commitment required for Star Wars<\/em>. However, Boyega\u00a0seems to have moved on from the Star Wars<\/em> franchise and has recently earned a Golden Globe nomination for his performance in Steve McQueen’s critically acclaimed anthology\u00a0Small Axe<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Despite the botched audition, Holland has gone on to land several other big franchise roles in the years since. In addition to landing the high-profile role of Marvel superhero Spider-Man<\/em> at the age of 19, first appearing as the web-slinger in 2016\u2019s\u00a0Captain America: Civil War,\u00a0<\/em>Holland will portray Nathan Drake<\/a> for Sony Pictures’ long-awaited movie adaptation of the popular video game series Uncharted<\/em>. Next month, Holland’s Cherry<\/em>, a film based on a semi-autobiographical book by veteran\u00a0Nico Walker, will debut on Apple TV Plus.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s interesting to think about what Disney\u2019s<\/em> endlessly\u00a0controversial\u00a0Star Wars<\/em> Sequel trilogy would have been like with Holland in the role of Finn.\u00a0Disney and Lucasfilm have received a lot of criticism<\/a> for their perceived lack of planning\u00a0when it comes\u00a0to the sequel trilogy, and Finn\u2019s uneven character arc is amongst those complaints. Despite Star Wars<\/em> continuously\u00a0being a divisive topic amongst fans, many seem to agree that Boyega was an excellent presence in all three\u00a0films. There\u2019s also the reality that Holland\u00a0would likely have never gotten the role of Spider-Man<\/em>\u00a0had landed the role in Star Wars,<\/em> and that\u00a0would be a downright tragedy.<\/p>\n
