A collaboration between <em>Dark Souls<\/em> developer FromSoftware and <em>Game of Thrones<\/em> creator George R.R. Martin sounds like everything fans of dark fantasy action RPGs might ask for.<\/p>\n<p>But years later, the lack of updates on the project has many <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/elden-ring\/\"><em>Elden Ring<\/em><\/a> fans frustrated. Now, some have once again taken their grievances to Twitter ahead of Sony\u2019s State of Play broadcast on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"related-single\"><strong>RELATED: <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/elden-ring-rating-pegi-16-news\/\">Elden Ring Rating Suggests News Could Be Coming Soon<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Quite a few clowns showed up in tweets, in addition to several other popular meme formats. Meanwhile, at least one person seemed to be attempting a magical ritual to summon updates. A tweet from @clockedbyhappy expressed their emotions with a gif showing\u00a0a mushroom man clobbering a player from <i>Dark Souls<\/i>. Other tweets included a clip of United States President Joe Biden and screenshots and clips from popular TV shows such as <i>King of the Hill<\/i> and <i>Avatar: The Last Airbender<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"320\" height=\"320\" frameborder=\"0\" src=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/sstarkm\/status\/1365068536595566593\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>This is far from the first time that <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/elden-ring-fans-meme-venting\/\"><em>Elden Ring<\/em> fans used memes<\/a> as a coping mechanism. Many fans themselves are aware this isn\u2019t a new phenomenon. Several commented that this happens whenever a gaming convention or trade show is around the corner. Other fans noted how they propelled <em>Elden Ring<\/em> to the top of trending through the sheer volume of memes. Unfortunately, that wasn\u2019t enough to make FromSoftware divulge any new information about\u00a0its upcoming game.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"320\" height=\"320\" frameborder=\"0\" src=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ignaciomagno_\/status\/1364995830294458369\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Development of the open-world RPG reportedly began in 2017, shortly after the release of <em>The Ringed City<\/em> DLC for <em>Dark Souls 3<\/em>. Billed as an \u201cevolution\u201d of <em>Dark Souls<\/em> by director Hidetaka Miyazaki,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/elden-ring-leaks-rumors-map-gameplay\/\"><em>Elden Ring<\/em> will reportedly feature a large open world<\/a> along with mechanics like horseback riding and mounted combat. George R. R. Martin contributed by writing the backstory and much of the underlying lore.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"320\" height=\"320\" frameborder=\"0\" src=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/clockedbyhappy\/status\/1365102714808463360\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, there\u2019s been precious little news since that announcement. In December, <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/elden-ring-news-2020\/\">FromSoftware\u2019s Marketing and Communication Manager<\/a> released a statement thanking fans for their patience and continued enthusiasm. He also indicated that COVID-19 contributed to the apparent delay, but hinted that there would be further updates in 2021.<\/p>\n<p>So far, though, that\u2019s yet to be the case, at least not through official channels. In January, <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/elden-ring-news-2021\/\">an industry insider hinted at more <em>Elden Ring<\/em> news<\/a> within the next few months. That insider was Venture Beat contributor Jeff Grubb, who has an impressive track record in predicting major releases.
