It&#8217;s a country that has given a ridiculous amount to the industry over the years, both in terms of <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/nintendo-switch-best-first-party-games\/\">the fantastic games that have been created there<\/a> and the pioneering Japanese talent\u00a0behind them.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"related-single\">RELATED:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/japan-games-2021-western-release\/\">8 Games We Can\u2019t Wait To Play In 2021 (That Are Already Out In Japan)<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Although the west has caught up a little recently, Japanese developers\u00a0still lead the way when it comes to <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/best-games-each-major-genre-metacritic\/\">innovation and creativity in gaming<\/a>. Not only are these genre-defining visionaries responsible for some of the biggest and most recognizable franchises of all time, but they&#8217;ve also inspired countless others along the way.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">10 <\/span>Hironobu Sakaguchi<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static0.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/dev-hironobu-sakaguchi.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>Hironobu Sakaguchi first began working for Square in the 1980s\u00a0and went on to work on many of the company&#8217;s biggest games over the next two decades. His greatest achievement, however,\u00a0was <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/original-final-fantasy-hidden-details-everyone-missed\/\">the creation of <em>Final Fantasy<\/em><\/a>. The huge success of the series over the coming years led to him becoming Square&#8217;s executive vice president, although he stepped down from the post in 2003\u00a0shortly before the company&#8217;s merger with former rivals Enix.<\/p>\n<p>Following his departure from Square, Sakaguchi set up his own development studio\u00a0called Mistwalker. Having originally started out creating titles for consoles, the studio has since shifted its focus to mobile gaming and has released several successful games for IOS and Android. The most notable of these is\u00a0<em>Terra Battle<\/em>;\u00a0which was downloaded almost two million times and reunited Sakaguchi with <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/final-fantasy-best-soundtracks-in-series\/\">legendary Final Fantasy composer Nobuo Uematsu<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">9 <\/span>Shinji Mikami<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static3.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/dev-shinji-mikami.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>Shinji Mikami began working at Capcom after attending a college recruitment event in the early nineties and it did not take long for the young designer to make a name for himself at the company. Together with producer Tokuro Fujiwara, <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/best-horror-games-90s-ahead-time\/\">he created <em>Resident Evil<\/em><\/a>; which would go on to become one of <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/best-survival-horror-games-ranked-according-metacritic\/\">the largest and most successful survival horror franchises of all time<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Mikami\u00a0worked on the series&#8217; first four entries as well as a number of other big titles like <em>Devil May Cry<\/em> and <em>Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney<\/em> before leaving the company to start up his own studio in 2004. In the years that followed, he had a hand in the creation of a number of other successful games\u00a0including\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/10-best-modern-horror-games\/\"><em>The Evil Within<\/em> and its 2017 sequel<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">8 <\/span>Yuji Naka<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static1.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/dev-yuji-naka.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>With Mario helping Nintendo to capture a huge share of the North American video game market in the mid to late eighties, Sega needed a mascot of their own to help turn the tides. Many were considered, but <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/sonic-series-vs-mario-franchise\/\">the company ultimately settled on a blue hedgehog named Sonic<\/a>. Sonic The Hedgehog: Who Wins In A Fight?<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The blue blur took America by storm and catapulted its creator into the spotlight. Naka was given his own team and together they were responsible for the creation of some of <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/best-sega-games-worst-metacritic\/\">the best games to ever appear on Sega consoles<\/a>. Naka has since gone on to set up his own studio which will be releasing a new platformer later this year.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">7 <\/span>Yu Suzuki<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static3.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/dev-yu-suzuki.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>Yu Suzuki really hit the ground running when he began working at Sega in 1983. Within his first four years at the company, he created eight hugely successful arcade titles including <em>Space Harrier<\/em>, <em>Out Run<\/em> and <em>After Burner<\/em>.\u00a0His next big achievement came in 1993 in the form of <em>Virtua Fighter<\/em>; <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/best-fighting-games-ahead-time-worst-too-generic\/\">a groundbreaking 3D fighting game<\/a> that completely revolutionized the genre.<\/p>\n<p>With his stock at Sega at an all time high, Suzuki embarked upon what would prove to be his most ambitious project yet. <em>Shenmue<\/em>. Upon its release, the game&#8217;s state of the art visuals and\u00a0innovative gameplay mechanics wowed players and critics alike and <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/shenmue-lessons-open-world-games\/\">helped to lay the groundwork for future open world games<\/a>. Suzuki continues to work on the series to this day and is currently in the process of pitching a fourth entry to publishers.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">6 <\/span>Toshihiro Nagoshi<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static0.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/dev-toshihiro-nagoshi.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>Toshihiro Nagoshi actually spent much of his early career working beneath Yu Suzuki at Sega&#8217;s legendary AM2 department. He worked as a supervisor and designer on many of the studio&#8217;s biggest hits before\u00a0moving into more senior positions\u00a0following <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/crazy-facts-shenmue-development\/\">the release of <em>Shenmue\u00a0<\/em>in 1999<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>As well as directing and producing several of the <em>Daytona<\/em>\u00a0racing games, Nagoshi\u00a0is credited as having created both the <em>Super Monkey Ball<\/em> and <em>Yakuza<\/em> franchises in the early two thousands. <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/yakuza-mainline-games-ranked-metacritic-scores\/\">The success of the latter<\/a> ultimately\u00a0led to the\u00a0formation of the\u00a0Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio; of which Nagoshi remains the general director.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">5 <\/span>Satoshi Tajiri<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static0.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/dev-satoshi-tajiri.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>Satoshi Tajiri was just 16 years old when he began writing and editing his own arcade gaming fanzine, Game Freak.\u00a0Eight years later, it was this name that he chose\u00a0for his\u00a0game development studio.\u00a0The company <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/game-freak-titles-not-pokemon\/\">developed a number of fairly successful titles throughout the early nineties<\/a>, but it would not be until 1996 that Game Freak would become a recognizable name outside of Japan.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"related-single\">RELATED:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/pokemon-every-region-hasnt-appeared-main-series-game-far\/\">Pok\u00e9mon: Every Region That Hasn&#8217;t Appeared In A Main Series Game So Far<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Takiri&#8217;s <em>Pokemon<\/em> games\u00a0were hugely successful domestically and took the rest of the world by storm when they released worldwide the following year. In the 25 years\u00a0that have followed,\u00a0the series has gone on to become <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/every-pokemon-game-3ds-ranked-according-metacritic\/\">one of the largest and most recognizable in the world<\/a> with over a billion games sold to date.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">4 <\/span>Masahiro Sakurai<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static2.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/dev-masahiro-sakurai.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>Masahiro Sakurai started\u00a0working at HAL Laboratory when he was still a teenager and quickly set about coming up with ideas for <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/easy-video-game-bosses-how-many-hits\/\">a game that was accessible to casual gamers<\/a>. This ultimately led to the creation of Kirby and the NES classic,\u00a0<em>Kirby&#8217;s Dream Land<\/em>. <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/kirby-best-worst-games-metacritic\/\">He worked on several more <em>Kirby<\/em> games in the years that followed<\/a> before eventually turning his attention to the fighting game genre.<\/p>\n<p><em>Super Smash Bros.<\/em> released in 1999 and became an instant hit thanks to its solid combat mechanics and the inclusion of some of Nintendo&#8217;s most popular characters. Since then, the game has spawned multiple sequels; four of which rank among <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/best-fighting-games-metacritic-scores\/\">the top 15 fighting games of all time on Metacritic<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">3 <\/span>Tetsuya Nomura<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static2.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/dev-tetsuya-nomura.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>Tetsuya Nomura started his career at Square\u00a0and worked as a character designer on some of <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/best-square-enix-games-arent-final-fantasy\/\">the company&#8217;s biggest hits of the nineties<\/a>. It wasn&#8217;t until the turn of the century, however, that he was given a shot at directing his first title. That game was\u00a0<em>Kingdom Hearts<\/em>, which Nomura also co-created along with veteran producer\u00a0Shinji Hashimoto.<\/p>\n<p>Following the\u00a0game&#8217;s success, Nomura was handed senior positions on a number of other big projects while also continuing as the director for <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/kingdom-hearts-games-tier-list\/\">the numerous\u00a0<em>Kingdom Hearts<\/em>\u00a0sequels and spin-offs<\/a>. As his stock continued to rise, he was handed the reins for the\u00a0highly anticipated and much requested remake of <em>Final Fantasy VII<\/em>.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">2 <\/span>Hideo Kojima<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static2.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/dev-hideo-kojima.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>Despite expressing a\u00a0keen interest in film-making during his teenage years, Hideo Kojima\u00a0ended up taking a job\u00a0at\u00a0Konami after graduating from university. It was here that he came up with the idea for <em>Metal Gear<\/em>. The game was a big hit with players, although it would not be until the series&#8217; third entry that Kojima&#8217;s would become such a recognizable name within the industry.<\/p>\n<p>The increased power of the PlayStation allowed Kojima to combine his love of film-making with his natural talent for game design. <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/video-games-longest-cutscenes-history\/\">Cinematic cut-scenes<\/a> and an incredibly immersive narrative helped <em>Metal Gear Solid<\/em> to become a critical and commercial success\u00a0and <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/metal-gear-solid-every-mainline-game-ranked-according-metacritic\/\">became\u00a0synonymous with the series moving forward<\/a>. After decades of acclaim, however, Konami and Kojima parted ways in 2015 and\u00a0Kojima Productions became an independent studio as a result. <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/death-stranding-loved-hated\/\">If <em>Death Stranding<\/em> is anything to go by<\/a> though, there&#8217;s a lot more to come from the legendary\u00a0auteur.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">1 <\/span>Shigeru Miyamoto<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static3.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/dev-shigeru-miyamoto.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>In many ways, Shigeru Miyamoto is like <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/every-spielberg-movie-ranked-rotten-tomatoes\/\">the\u00a0Steven Spielberg of gaming<\/a>. He&#8217;s responsible for <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/best-nintendo-games-according-metacritic\/\">the creation of some of the biggest franchises of all time<\/a> and has helped to shape an entire genre. It helps, of course, that <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/shigeru-miyamoto-9-hugely-influential-figures-gaming\/\">he was able to learn from such visionaries as\u00a0Gunpei Yokoi and\u00a0Satoru Iwata<\/a>, but his\u00a0unparalleled\u00a0achievements remain incredibly impressive nonetheless.<\/p>\n<p>As well as\u00a0creating\u00a0the likes of <em>Mario<\/em>, <em>Zelda<\/em> and <em>Star Fox<\/em>, Miyamoto has had a hand in almost all of <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/best-nintendo-games-decade-metacritic\/\">Nintendo&#8217;s biggest hits of the last few decades<\/a>. He&#8217;s also held several senior positions at the company and has acted as a mentor\u00a0to many of its up and coming developers.
