The movie is set for a summer 2021 release and tells the story of two boys with a double life.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/pixar\/\"  rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pixar\u2019s<\/a> latest existential celestial body-swap film <em>Soul<\/em>, debuted on both Disney Plus and in theaters on Christmas day last year and received high critical praise. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s uncertain at this point if Luca will have a Disney Plus release that is free to subscribers like Soul or if it will have a paid premier access rental window on the platform <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/disney-still-made-big-money-on-mulan-box-office-disney-plus-premiere-access\/\"  rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a la 2020\u2019s<\/a>\u00a0<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mulan<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the upcoming Walt Disney Animation Studios movie <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/raya-and-the-last-dragon-trailer\/\"  rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Raya and the Last Dragon<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"related-single\"><strong>RELATED: <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/pixar-soul-movie-needed-2020\/\"  rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pixar&#8217;s Soul Was The Movie People Needed In 2020<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The film centers around the friendship of two young boys in a beautiful seaside Italian town who share a big secret: they are both mermaid-like sea creatures. Jacob Trembly (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Room<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wonder<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) voices the titular Luca in the movie with Jack Dylan Grazer (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shazam!<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) as his aquatic friend. Emma Berman will have her debut as the boys\u2019 misfit friend, Giulia. Luca\u2019s parents are played by Maya Rudolph and Jim Gaffigan. Italian comedian Saverio Raimondo voices the movie\u2019s villain and Italian theater actor and director Maro Barricelli is set to play Giulia\u2019s fisherman father.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"320\" height=\"320\" frameborder=\"0\" src=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Pixar\/status\/1364938205418512384?s=20\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Luca<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is the first feature movie to be directed by Enrico Casarosa. He directed <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/pixar-best-theatrical-shorts\/\"  rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the short film<\/a>\u00a0<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">La Luna<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which was run in theaters before 2011\u2019s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brave<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The short featured a boy and his father on a boat who set anchor on the moon and it earned him an academy award nomination for best animated short.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The teaser trailer that Pixar debuted today gives a first glimpse of these characters in action. It\u2019s full of beautiful imagery of the two boys running and biking through gorgeous Italian landscapes in summer. We also see the first footage of these characters as they transform into their sea creature form and statues of similarly looking sea creatures being hunted around the town set up the stakes.<\/p>\n<p>The trailer paints the scene for a portion of the movie to focus on these characters enjoying summer together in Italy and it shares a strong resemblance to the films of Italian director Luca Guadagnino (<em>Call Me By Your Name<\/em>). The name of this film and the casting of Jack Dylan Grazer indicate that these similarities are no coincidence. Grazer was the star of Guadagnino\u2019s most recent project, a <a href=\"https:\/\/screenrant.com\/we-are-who-we-are-original-similarities-call-me-by-your-name-comparison\/\"  rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">miniseries called <em>We Are Who We Are<\/em><\/a> for HBO and Sky Atlantic.<\/p>\n<p>Pixar has maintained a reputation of being a studio that entertains children and adults alike and it looks like Luca could be another winning movie in its collection.
