After the Disney\/Fox merger that brought several Marvel characters back to their rightful home, many fans\u00a0started to worry that the company would\u00a0abandon the\u00a0R-rated themes of franchises such as Deadpool <\/em><\/strong><\/a>in order to\u00a0force-fit them into a family-friendly mold. Considering that the success of\u00a0the\u00a0Deadpool<\/em> films relies heavily on\u00a0offensive jokes and excessive gore, such concerns were surely valid.<\/p>\n

Thankfully, it looks like Disney has no intention of doing that. Kevin Feige, the president of Marvel Studios, confirmed at a TCA press tour that the upcoming\u00a0Deadpool 3 <\/em>film\u00a0will definitely be R-rated. He says it will be the studio’s only R-rated project, as Marvel does not have any plans to pursue other mature enterprises<\/a>; at least, at the moment.<\/p>\n

Last year, it was announced that Bob’s Burgers<\/em> writers Wendy Molyneux and Lizzie Molyneux-Logelin<\/a>\u00a0will pen the script for Deadpool’s MCU debut. Their experience in rule-bending comedy makes them a fitting choice for the job. Ryan Reynolds is also set to reprise his role as the Merc with a Mouth, bringing the project full circle.<\/p>\n

While the news was a victory for\u00a0Deadpool\u00a0<\/em>fans, it also sparked concerns for other Marvel titles in the pipeline, such as the recently announced\u00a0Blade<\/em> project<\/a>. Like\u00a0Deadpool,\u00a0<\/em>the\u00a0Blade\u00a0<\/em>films featuring Wesley Snipes all had R-ratings, which made sense considering a lot of the story involves hash-and-slash violence and lots of blood. Despite confirmations of the reboot, which will star Mahershala Ali as the Daywalker, Feige\u00a0went on to say that the studio has not yet encountered a storyline or character’s journey that requires a rating beyond PG-13.<\/p>\n

This likely means that there also won’t be another\u00a0Logan<\/em>-type film in the near future, should the X-Men finally make their MCU debut, nor will there be any\u00a0mature retellings of stories for darker characters such as\u00a0Ghost Rider<\/em> or the freshly re-acquired\u00a0Defenders<\/em><\/a>. It’s unclear if this move will benefit or hurt the company in the long run, especially since DC Films has taken the full plunge\u00a0into the dark side with upcoming films like Robert Pattinson’s The<\/em>\u00a0Batman<\/em> and Jared Leto’s\u00a0Morbius, <\/em>which are\u00a0rumored to possibly get an R rating.<\/p>\n

Fans will just have to wait and see whether Marvel Studios decides to change its mind and make exceptions for future titles. For now, they can get excited over the next releases in the studio’s 2021 schedule, which includes\u00a0Black Widow<\/em> (May 7),\u00a0Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings\u00a0<\/em>(July 9),\u00a0Eternals<\/em> (November 5), and\u00a0Spider-Man: No Way Home<\/em><\/a> (December 17).<\/p>\n

Deadpool 3\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>is currently in development at Marvel Studios.<\/p>\n
