DC Comics’ Man of Steel is being reimagined for the silver screen once again. Award-winning author\u00a0and journalist Ta-Nehisi Coates will write a new Superman<\/em><\/strong><\/a> movie for Waner Bros., with\u00a0J. J. Abrams and his production company\u00a0Bad Robot<\/em>\u00a0attached to produce the film.<\/p>\n

In an official statement to Shadow and Act, Coates said, “I look forward to meaningfully adding to the legacy of America’s most iconic mythic hero.” Coates is an extremely accomplished award-winning novelist and essayist, whose work has been published in outlets such as The Atlantic, The New York Times, The Village Voice, TIME,<\/em> and more. He is known for writing extensively\u00a0about social and political issues, mostly related to African-Americans\u00a0and\u00a0white supremacy. He has written several highly acclaimed non-fiction books\u00a0including T<\/em>he Beautiful Struggle<\/i>,\u00a0We Were Eight Years in Power: An American Tragedy,\u00a0<\/i>and\u00a0<\/sup>Between the World and Me,\u00a0<\/i>which won the 2015\u00a0National Book Award for Nonfiction.<\/p>\n

Coates has\u00a0also had some recent success\u00a0writing for Marvel Comics,<\/em> tackling runs on\u00a0characters\u00a0Black Panther<\/em>\u00a0and Captain America<\/em>. In fact, Coates’ acclaimed\u00a0Black Panther<\/em> comic book run is even credited by previous Disney CEO Bob Iger with helping to greenlight the award-winning\u00a0Black Panther<\/em> film from Marvel Studios.<\/a>\u00a0Furthermore, Coates received special thanks in the credits for the Black Panther<\/em> film, Avengers: Infinity War,<\/em> and Avengers: Endgame.<\/em><\/p>\n

At the moment there\u00a0are few details regarding the\u00a0reboot apart from select quotes from Coates and Abrams, but\u00a0The Hollywood Reporter sources claim the project is aiming to tell a Black Superman story. In 2019, there had been reports\u00a0saying Michael B. Jordan<\/a> had once proposed a similar take on Superman to Warner Bros., though such a project never materialized. THR notes that it is possible the studio may return to Jordan for Coates’ Superman film, which does not have a director attached at this point. Actor Henry Cavill has been the most recent actor to tackle\u00a0the character on the big screen, notably in\u00a0Zack Snyder’s DCEU films\u00a0Man of Steel, Batman v Superman<\/em>, and Snyder’s\u00a0upcoming re-release\u00a0of Justice League<\/em><\/a>.<\/em> Snyder has received some criticism over the years for his “dark and gritty” portrayal\u00a0of Superman, who many believe should be a symbol of hope and optimism.<\/p>\n

Superman has been rebooted on many different occasions throughout the years in both film and television.\u00a0His first live-action debut was in the 1948 black-and-white serial, where he was portrayed\u00a0by actor Kirk Alyn. One of the most memorable on-screen versions\u00a0of the Kryptonian superhero\u00a0was in the 1978 film adaptation starring Christopher Reeve<\/a>, whose portrayal is widely regarded as one the best live-action depictions of the character. The role later went to\u00a0actor Brandon Routh, who portrayed\u00a0the hero in the 2006 reboot Superman Returns. <\/em>Routh\u00a0reprised his role in the CW’s\u00a0Crisis on Infinite Earths<\/em>\u00a0television\u00a0crossover event.<\/p>\n

There have also been many abandoned Superman<\/em> films over the years, including a Tim Burton-directed adaptation\u00a0written by Kevin Smith and starring Nicolas Cage as the Man of Steel. The most recent actor to dawn the red cape in a live-action role is\u00a0Tyler Hoechlin, who plays Clark Kent\/Superman on the CW series\u00a0Superman & Lois<\/em><\/a>. The series premiere\u00a0received high praise for Hoechlin’s\u00a0positive and kind-hearted portrayal\u00a0of the character.<\/p>\n

The Superman<\/strong><\/em> reboot is being developed for Warner Bros.<\/p>\n
