A science-fiction story about a group of aliens stranded on Earth and forced to live in a refugee camp,\u00a0<em>District 9\u00a0<\/em>was built off the repurposed props and ideas from Blomkamp&#8217;s canceled\u00a0<em>Halo\u00a0<\/em>project and went on to become one of the better films of 2009, <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/anthem-district-9-director-short-film\/\">launching\u00a0Blomkamp&#8217;s directing career<\/a> into the mainstream consciousness.<\/p>\n<p>Since then, Blomkamp has continued to work on various films,\u00a0several with a similar style and genre such as\u00a0<em>Elysium<\/em> and <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/apex-legends-neill-blomkamp-wants-chappie-in-the-game\/\">Dev Patel&#8217;s\u00a0<em>Chappie<\/em><\/a>, though he never got back around to that\u00a0<em>Halo\u00a0<\/em>adaptation. Fans of his work have often wondered whether he would ever return to the world of\u00a0<em>District 9<\/em>, and just recently there has been official word on a long-awaited sequel.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"related-single\"><strong>RELATED: <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/halo-movie-that-never-was\/\">The Halo Movie that Never Was<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The original\u00a0film<em>\u00a0<\/em>followed <a href=\"https:\/\/screenrant.com\/district-9-movie-wikus-van-der-merwe-underrated-antihero\/\"  rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the main character Wikus<\/a> as he attempts to begin relocating the aliens,\u00a0referred to as Prawns, out of District 9 to a new settlement following tensions between the camp and local humans. Unfortunately for Wikus, he ends up exposed to some alien materials and begins to mutate into a Prawn himself. This development leads to him being hunted by his own military, who want to vivisect him for their research.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"320\" height=\"320\" frameborder=\"0\" src=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/NeillBlomkamp\/status\/1365167374421225473?s=20\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>In order to survive,\u00a0Wikus\u00a0teams up with a Prawn by the name of Christopher, who has a plan to escape Earth and contact his home-world. As the film ends, Christopher manages to escape earth, leaving Wikus and the rest of District 9 behind, and the audience is left to wonder whether he will return to rescue the others or enact revenge on the humans for the way they treated his people.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, an open-ended finale like that naturally left fans speculating about what would happen next and hoping for a sequel that might answer those lingering questions. Those fans can rest easy, as Neill Blomkamp has recently Tweeted an update saying that a hypothetical\u00a0<em>District 10\u00a0<\/em>is in the works, and the script is already being written, along with a slightly ominous &#8220;It&#8217;s coming&#8230;.&#8221; Per Blomkamp, the screenplay is being penned by Sharlto Copley, the actor who portrayed Wikus, and\u00a0Terri Tatchell, who co-wrote the first <em>District 9<\/em> film.<\/p>\n<p>So naturally, the floodgates have been opened and audiences can get back to theorizing and debating what this new script will have in store for the characters and world.
