The procedurally generated world has <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/best-open-world-games-assassins-creed-valhalla\/\">stunning artistic visuals<\/a> dripping with creativity and artistry, ensuring that there is never a dull moment when traversing the environments.<\/p>\n<p>A note from the game&#8217;s Steam page summarizes the game best: &#8220;<em>Immersion, exploration, and contemplation form the core of Shape of the World. This is a place to get lost in, a relaxing world for you to spend 1 to 3 hours meandering at your own pace, observing and unwinding.<\/em>&#8220;<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">8 <\/span>Terraria<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static0.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Terraria.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>Originally released in 2011, the 2D adventure sandbox game\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/Terraria\/\">Terraria<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>is still going strong today. The game has constantly been compared to\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/Minecraft\/\">Minecraft<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>over the years, not only for the crafting and mining gameplay but also for how the two games are among the most non-linear ever released.\u00a0Re-Logic&#8217;s game hasn&#8217;t been able to reach\u00a0<em>Minecraft<\/em>&#8216;s eye-watering <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ign.com\/articles\/2019\/04\/19\/top-10-best-selling-video-games-of-all-time\"  rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">sales figures of 200 million+<\/a>, but it impressively exceeded\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamedaily.biz\/article\/1675\/terraria-breaks-30-million-copies-sold-but-its-potential-is-far-greater\"  rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the 30 million mark in 2020<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><em>Terraria\u00a0<\/em>has a fair amount of lore that can be researched, but it is completely optional.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">7 <\/span>The Legend of Zelda<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static0.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/legend-of-zelda-title-screen-1986.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>For the sake of variety, it makes sense to include at least one <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/80s-kid-games\/\">retro title<\/a> in this list, and considering that most open-world games wouldn&#8217;t have existed without\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/legend%20of%20zelda\/\"><em>The Legend of Zelda<\/em><\/a>&#8216;s influence, it would seem unfair not to pick it.\u00a0<em>The Legend of Zelda<\/em>&#8216;s map certainly doesn&#8217;t compare in size and aesthetics to the huge open-world maps of today, but\u00a0<em>The Legend of Zelda<\/em>&#8216;s world is so well designed and filled with so many secrets that most players wouldn&#8217;t have it any other way.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"related-single\">RELATED:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/longest-open-ended-video-games\/\">10 Open-Ended Games To Pour Hundreds Of Hours Into<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The game was a pioneer of the open-world genre in how it gave virtually no sense of direction or help; the players\u00a0can complete dungeons in any order that they chose, except for the final one. The shift was controversial at the time; fans of the series and <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/ranking-best-street-racing-games-all-time\/\">arcade street racing<\/a>\u00a0as a whole were unhappy as they thought <em>Paradise<\/em>\u00a0would mark the death of street racing games, which up until now they have been correct about.<\/p>\n<p>However, the vast majority of\u00a0<em>Burnout Paradise\u00a0<\/em>players evidently enjoyed the open-world, as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2018\/3\/15\/17125348\/burnout-paradise-remastered-ps4-xbox-interview\"  rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">producer Matt Webster has previously stated<\/a> that\u00a0data\u00a0showed most players were simply cruising around the open-world map without partaking in events. The game&#8217;s story is predominantly told through gameplay and environmental clues, while audio logs, secret videos, and a secret cutscene offer further perspective.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">2 <\/span>The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static3.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/Legend-of-Zelda-Breath-of-the-Wild-Logo.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>The most recent\u00a0<em>Legend of Zelda\u00a0<\/em>title joins the first game in the series on this list for a very similar reason to the first.\u00a0Nintendo decided to go back to its roots with\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/Breath%20of%20the%20Wild\/\">Breath of the Wild<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>and consequently let players tackle the game in almost any way that they chose. Players need to complete the tutorial stage and defeat Ganon to complete the game; everything in between is totally up to them.<\/p>\n<p>As for the story,\u00a0<em>Breath of the Wild\u00a0<\/em>is very hands-off. Although there are numerous cutscenes and story moments in the game, the vast majority are optional and can be completely ignored,\u00a0a design choice likely inspired by\u00a0the soulsborne series.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">1 <\/span>Minecraft<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static0.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/image-79.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>The ultimate non-linear experience,\u00a0<em>Minecraft\u00a0<\/em>lets players explore its worlds in any way that they like.
