The Pokemon Company recently announced not only one game set in the Sinnoh region, but two. While fans were\u00a0anticipating the\u00a0Diamond\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0Pearl\u00a0<\/em>remake<\/a> announcement, a new open-world RPG titled\u00a0Pokemon Legends: Arceus\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>threw players a curveball. An open-world\u00a0Pokemon\u00a0<\/em>game is something fans have been requesting for quite some time, but\u00a0Pokemon Legends: Arceus\u00a0<\/em>will handle that expectation a bit differently by rewinding the clock back before the Sinnoh region became a populated area. In the same way that\u00a0Breath of the Wild\u00a0<\/em>changed the tried-and-true formula of\u00a0Zelda\u00a0<\/em>games,\u00a0Pokemon Legends\u00a0<\/em>will twist the normal format of\u00a0the\u00a0Pokemon\u00a0<\/em>series.<\/p>\n

What also surprised fans about The Pokemon Company’s sudden announcement<\/a> was the stunning graphics seen in the trailer. This is a large departure from the graphics seen in past games, for example,\u00a0Sword\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0Shield<\/em>, which many fans were disappointed with. While the most recent new generation of\u00a0Pokemon\u00a0<\/em>attempted to take bits from open-world games, it doesn’t quite hit the mark in the way\u00a0Breath of the Wild\u00a0<\/em>has become the standard for exploration games. Pulling from the action-exploration category,\u00a0Breath of the Wild\u00a0<\/em>seems to have spawned its own genre of gaming, resulting in “copycats” such as\u00a0Genshin Impact<\/em>, and now,\u00a0Pokemon Legends: Arceus<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n

Breath of the Wild\u00a0<\/em>was highly acclaimed for its change in gameplay from past\u00a0Zelda\u00a0<\/em>titles, moving away from linear storytelling and giving the player full control over their adventure. Players can decide when they want to fight the Divine Beasts and Ganon<\/a>, if at all, but it’s not necessary to get the whole experience behind\u00a0Breath of the Wild<\/em>. The Divine Beasts can be conquered in any order, but most likely, the player will become lost in exploration around Hyrule, discovering its many nooks and crannies before even getting started with the main story, which\u00a0appears in the form of bread crumbs.<\/p>\n

Nintendo took a bold risk with\u00a0Breath of the Wild<\/em>, and now the gaming community considers it one of the best games of all time. Nintendo is seemingly emulating that same adventure, but in the world of\u00a0Pokemon<\/em>. While the announcement trailer shows an only early build of the game, this is a game about exploration and creating the first Pokedex. It even mimics\u00a0a shot seen in\u00a0Breath of the Wild<\/em><\/a>‘s original trailer, meaning Nintendo is likely replicating that experience\u00a0with\u00a0Pokemon Legends: Arceus<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Of course, that doesn’t\u00a0mean\u00a0the upcoming\u00a0Pokemon\u00a0<\/em>game will be exactly like\u00a0Breath of the Wild<\/em>, and fans shouldn’t expect it to be the exact same experience, if not for the fact that\u00a0Breath of the Wild\u00a0<\/em>is a one-of-a-kind game.<\/p>\n

But\u00a0Pokemon\u00a0<\/em>has just as much of its own lore to play with, and Pokemon Legends\u00a0<\/em>will likely add much more lore<\/a> in itself. By turning back time to before\u00a0the Sinnoh region was founded, filled with only empty wilderness and a rural village, a lot of room is left for\u00a0Pokemon Legends: Arceus\u00a0<\/em>to grow. For example, while it’s currently unclear what shape the story will take other than creating the first Pokedex, the mythical Pokemon known as Arceus will have a significant influence on the game. Known as the “Original One,” Arceus is known to have created the Sinnoh region, which means this lore will likely have some involvement in\u00a0Pokemon Legends<\/em>‘ plot, and may also mean that the creation trio, Dialga, Palkia, and Giratina, will make an appearance as well.<\/p>\n

So while the art style may be similar, the gameplay is largely inspired by the\u00a02017 hit\u00a0Zelda\u00a0<\/em>title, and it walks and talks like\u00a0Breath of the Wild<\/em>,\u00a0Pokemon Legends: Arceus\u00a0<\/em>will likely be its own beast<\/a>\u00a0simply inspired by the\u00a0groundbreaking\u00a0trending style of gameplay.<\/p>\n

Pokemon Legends: Arceus<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0releases in 2022 for the Nintendo Switch.<\/p>\n
