Set in 1970s London, <em>Cruella<\/em> offers a re-imaged origin story of the iconic Dalmatian hoarding thief and follows Estella, a young grifter who is determined to find success in the fashion world. Estella soon embraces her wicked and mischievous side after she meets fashion legend Baroness von Hellman (played by Emma Thompson).<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"related-single\"><strong>RELATED:<\/strong>\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/joker-joaquin-phoenix-midsommar-next-project\/\">Joker&#8217;s Joaquin Phoenix Teams Up With Midsommar Director For Next Project<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><em>Joker<\/em>\u00a0started trending on Twitter immediately following <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/cruella-trailer-emma-stone-perfect-role\/\">the release of the\u00a0<em>Cruella\u00a0<\/em>trailer<\/a>. The two films were compared to one another because they are offering reinterpretations of iconic villains. They also had gritty first trailers in which their titular characters explain their troubled backstory via voice-over. Comedian Matthew Highton swapped out the audio from the\u00a0<em>Cruella<\/em>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/dreams-joker-stairs-scene-recreation\/\">trailer\u00a0with that of <em>Joker<\/em><\/a>. Highton stated on Twitter that the mashup fit so well\u00a0that it could have served as \u201ca prequel film about <em>Joker\u2019<\/em>s mother.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"320\" height=\"320\" frameborder=\"0\" src=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MattHighton\/status\/1362356277825986565?ref_src=https:\/\/gamerant.com\/cruella-joker-trailer-mashup\/twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1362356277825986565%7Ctwgr%5E%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&#038;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fmovieweb.com%2Fcruella-joker-trailer-mashup%2F%22 frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Joaquin Phoenix snagged his first Oscar win for his portrayal of Arthur Fleck\/Joker in <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/joker-movie-ripped-off-underrated\/\">Todd Phillips&#8217; controversial film<\/a>.\u00a0The physiological blockbuster<em>\u00a0<\/em>followed a wannabe stand-up comic who transforms into one of the most dangerous villains in Gotham City.\u00a0<em>Joker\u00a0<\/em>received 11 Academy Award nominations and became the highest-grossing R-rated film in history by making over $1 billion worldwide.\u00a0<em>Cruella<\/em>\u00a0hasn&#8217;t been rated yet by the MPAA, but it\u2019s unlikely it will receive an R rating like <em>Joker<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Cruella de Vil\u00a0first appeared in\u00a0Dodie Smith\u2019s iconic children\u2019s novel <em>The Hundred and One Dalmatians<\/em>. The character was then notably seen in the 1961 animated film\u00a0<em>One Hundred and One Dalmatians\u00a0<\/em>and <a href=\"https:\/\/screenrant.com\/cruella-movie-emma-stone-101-dalmations-live-action-prequel\/\"  rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Glenn Close later played the terrifying villain<\/a> in the 1996 live-action remake and its 2002 sequel. Craig Gillespie, who previously helmed\u00a0<em>I, Tonya,<\/em>\u00a0directed\u00a0<em>Cruella<\/em> for Disney while Dana Fox (<em>What Happens In Vegas<\/em>) and Tony McNamara (<em>The Favourite<\/em>) wrote the screenplay.<\/p>\n<p><em>Cruella<\/em>&#8216;s\u00a0first trailer drew an impressive 71 million views in its first 24 hours. This was more than\u00a0<em>Maleficent: Mistress of Evil\u2019s\u00a0<\/em>61.7 million <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/classic-aladdin-lion-king-games-remaster\/\">and\u00a0<em>Aladdin\u2019s\u00a0<\/em>60.8 million<\/a>, but those fans will have to wait a little while longer to see the new adaptation.
