Players were giddy over the\u00a0thought\u00a0of seamlessly swinging the ergonomic Wiimote like a tennis racket or even\u00a0a virtual lightsaber.<\/p>\n

Not surprisingly, it was the console’s mass-market hits like Wii Sports<\/a><\/em>, Wii Fit<\/em>, and\u00a0Mario Kart\u00a0Wii<\/a><\/em> which tend to hog the spotlight, as these were accessible titles that utilized the motion controls to their advantage. And of course, Nintendo’s usual heavy hitters like\u00a0Super Smash Bros<\/a>.\u00a0Brawl<\/em> and\u00a0The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess<\/em> were a draw for their core audience.<\/p>\n

But amidst these two major groups, there are\u00a0several lesser-known\u00a0and forgotten gems by first, second, and third parties alike. Given the Wii’s densely populated library of fun, often unique titles, there’s no shortage of them\u00a0\u2014 but here are\u00a0some of the best.<\/p>\n

10 <\/span>A Boy And His Blob<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

With its simple, cartoony visuals and puzzle-platforming gameplay, A Boy and His Blob<\/em>\u00a0feels akin to a modern indie game despite its ’09 release. Like its NES predecessor, this reimagined revamp<\/a> fell\u00a0under the radar amidst Wii’s heavy-hitting platformers.<\/p>\n

As the title gives away, the game stars a young lad and a blob-like creature who must work together to traverse obstacles and solve puzzles. His blob companion consumes magic jelly beans, which cause it to transform into various objects used to progress in the game.<\/p>\n

The delightful art style and clever game design make\u00a0this an interesting alternative to Mario<\/em> on Wii, despite being greatly overshadowed by the star plumber.<\/p>\n

9 <\/span>Zack & Wiki: Quest For Barbaros’ Treasure<\/h2>\n

The tough puzzle gameplay<\/a>\u00a0and third-party origins\u00a0of this Capcom romp meant that its hype and appeal were somewhat limited on Wii. Still, those who\u00a0did<\/em>\u00a0unearth this hidden gem were pleased to find some truly charming art design and some of the best usage of Wii’s motion control.<\/p>\n

In one sense, Zack & Wiki<\/em> can be described as a colorful, well-crafted point-and-click adventure. Yet the game\u00a0adds spice with refined motion-based actions like tree-sawing, along with creative, dynamic scenes that resemble a\u00a0virtual escape room.<\/p>\n

8 <\/span>Sonic Colors<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

It’s odd how little this game’s mentioned even among the\u00a0Sonic<\/em>\u00a0fandom, given that it’s often viewed as one of the few great 3D games featuring the hedgehog<\/a>. Though technically, Sonic Colors<\/em>\u00a0shifts<\/strong>\u00a0<\/em>between 2D and 3D perspectives and usually finds a nice balance between the two.<\/p>\n

The game’s colorful, celestial theme resembles Super Mario Galaxy<\/em>, though it still taps into that thrilling, fast-paced gameplay Sonic is known for. Though it’s not flawless, Colors<\/em> remains one of the better post-90s Sonic<\/em> romps among many fans.<\/p>\n

7 <\/span>WarioWare: Smooth Moves<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

When one thinks of the Wii, it’s usually those fun, colorful party and social games<\/a> that come to mind. Think Wii Sports<\/em>, Wii Play<\/em>,\u00a0Mario Party<\/em>, and Mario Kart<\/em>. Still, this quirky title tends to get unjustly lost in the shuffle.<\/p>\n

It’s partly understandable, as WarioWare<\/em>‘s weird themes and rapid-fire microgames aren’t for everyone. But those willing to embrace the absurdity of virtual nose-picking and fake barbell squats often found a laugh-out-loud great time in Smooth Moves<\/em>. The amusing use of Wii’s motion controls serves to make the seemingly simple games pop.<\/p>\n

While games whiz by in the blink of an eye, the fast-paced action and slew of competitive and co-op modes ensured\u00a0hours<\/em>\u00a0of fun at parties.<\/p>\n

6 <\/span>Muramasa: The Demon Blade<\/h2>\n

In an era stressing 3D graphics, motion control, and gaming peripherals, Vanillaware decided to go back to basics with this stylistic action game for Wii.\u00a0But don’t let the button mashing and flat aesthetic fool you. Muramasa<\/em> proves deceptively fun and in-depth, as the few who managed to notice it ’09 discovered.<\/p>\n

Its RPG elements, Japanese folklore, and charming storybook\u00a0visuals set the stage for a rich, memorable experience in its 12-hour journey.<\/p>\n

5 <\/span>Sin & Punishment: Star Successor<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Being overshadowed by the similar Bayonetta<\/em><\/a> and coming from a Japan-only predecessor, this rail shooter never quite took off in the West.<\/p>\n

Regardless, Star Successor<\/em> offers some thrilling action that makes solid use of the Wiimote’s pointer controls.\u00a0The fun, frantic arcade experience is\u00a0really<\/em>\u00a0amped up when locking and loading with a friend and equipping\u00a0a couple of Wii Zappers for good measure. It lives on now only as an obscure Wii relic and holdout on the\u00a0abandoned Wii U\u00a0Virtual Console.<\/p>\n

4 <\/span>Red Steel 2<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Despite being viewed as inferior by most Wii gamers,\u00a0the original Red Steel<\/em> tends to overshadow this more distinct and interesting sequel. Rather than just hone the “rough-around-the-edges” RS formula, Ubisoft veers in a very different direction with this 2010 follow-up. The result is a thematic blend of East and West \u2014 and gameplay that shifts between refined FPS gameplay<\/a> and nuanced swordplay.<\/p>\n

This\u00a0charming console strategy romp\u00a0has since found new life on Steam some years after its quiet debut. For some Wii gamers though, Little King’s Story<\/em> remains one of the best third-party efforts for the console even in its original, non-HD form.<\/p>\n

Little King’s Story<\/em> offers a fantastical, in-depth alternative for Pikmin<\/em> fans. Studio Cing and Town Factory task players with managing a kingdom and leading a band of fighters and citizens\u00a0of different trades\u00a0\u2014 like farming and hunting.\u00a0The management-sim gameplay is complemented by exploration, rewarding progression, and fun combat.<\/p>\n

This is also one of Wii’s more robust titles, taking close to 25 hours to finish the core campaign.<\/p>\n

2 <\/span>Rhythm Heaven Fever<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Take the cartoony, bite-sized games of WarioWare<\/em> and add\u00a0a rhythmic element<\/a>,\u00a0then you might have Rhythm Heaven Fever<\/em>. The game can be likened to a rhythmic playground with its slew of delightful, often weird beat-based romps. Nintendo tests your mettle and sense of rhythm with an unforgiving scoring system and unique minigames ranging from\u00a0dance cues\u00a0to sword hacking.<\/p>\n

Released at a time when Wii was waning,\u00a0RHF<\/em> reminded players of the console’s knack for fun party games \u2014 particularly when\u00a0playing with a friend.<\/p>\n

1 <\/span>Mario Strikers: Charged<\/h2>\n

It’s not too often that a game bearing the iconic “Mario<\/em>” name<\/a> is forgotten\u00a0\u2014 though that largely seems to be the case with this soccer\u00a0party game\u00a0on Wii. Strikers Charged<\/em> builds on the fun formula of Strikers<\/em> on GameCube, with addictive soccer gameplay and added elements like the game-changing “Super Ability.”<\/p>\n

MSC<\/em> even takes advantage of the Wii’s internet function with a surprisingly solid ranked online mode.<\/p>\n
