It is arguably one of Hidetaka Miyazaki&#8217;s finest games and is different from all FromSoftware&#8217;s other titles. So, what exactly sets\u00a0it\u00a0aside from the other Souls games? Why are fans still clamoring for a PC release of this title, and how does it still stand as a top-tier example of the genre, when so many games have been released since?<\/p>\n<p>Several components are at play when thinking about how\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/bloodborne\/\"><em>Bloodborne<\/em>\u00a0<\/a>is so different from other Souls titles, and why that made it so successful. These involve changing up the basic formula of the main FromSoftware titles, including basic mechanics, thematic concerns, narrative stylings, and the platform it released on along with a lot of other minute details.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"related-single\"><strong>RELATED:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/playstation-exclusives-pc-days-gone-bloodborne-god-war-final-fantasy-7-remake-gravity-rush\/\">5 PlayStation Exclusives That Should Follow Days Gone to PC<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/static0.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/bloodborne-combat.jpg\"\/><\/figure>\n<p>The most obvious, immediate way in which\u00a0<em>Bloodborne<\/em>\u00a0differs from its Souls game predecessors is through pacing.\u00a0<em>Bloodborne<\/em>&#8216;s approach here\u00a0rears its head right at the start, when the first enemy a player faces is a relatively small, but incredibly deadly werewolf. In\u00a0<em>Dark Souls<\/em>, the first aggressive enemy that appears is the Asylum Demon. While terrifying, the game expects a player to be able to move past it fairly quickly into the next area, and this feat is relatively easy once the shock of the creature&#8217;s size subsides. The Asylum Demon is similar to a lot of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/dark-souls-boss-fights-fans-loved-hated\/\"><em>Dark Souls<\/em>\u00a0bosses<\/a>;\u00a0it hits incredibly hard but does so very slowly. In immediate contrast, the werewolf at the start of\u00a0<em>Bloodborne<\/em>\u00a0is incredibly fast and ferocious.<\/p>\n<p>Both of these enemies are great exercises in foreshadowing the main combat of each game.\u00a0<em>Dark Souls<\/em>\u00a0encourages a much slower, more considered playstyle, whereas\u00a0<em>Bloodborne<\/em>\u00a0punishes hesitancy and over-cautious behavior in its combat. This also fits very thematically with each game.\u00a0<em>Dark Souls<\/em>\u00a0is a tale of a kingdom long past and the journey of one lost Hollow to put its old gods to rest.\u00a0<em>Bloodborne<\/em>\u00a0is a tale of the frenetic and terrifying beast blood plague, delving into the mind, its madness, and the body. <em>Bloodborne&#8217;s<\/em> world is so well loved that fans even create <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/bloodborne-soulslike-16-bit-yarntown\/\">retro versions of\u00a0Yharnam<\/a>, showing how inspiring the city&#8217;s design is.<\/p>\n<p>One of the main ways in which\u00a0<em>Bloodborne<\/em>\u00a0changes up its pace relative to the Souls games is how it uses healing. The Souls series is known for its difficulty,\u00a0and player health management plays a huge part in that. The\u00a0<em>Dark Souls<\/em>\u00a0games use an &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/dark-souls-3-strategy-guide-estus-flask\/\">Estus Flask<\/a>&#8221; to restore player health. These flasks took a long time to drink, slowed the player down, and restored a huge chunk of health.\u00a0<em>Bloodborne<\/em>\u00a0changes this system massively. In the game, &#8220;blood vials&#8221; restore a small amount of health. Further to that, when\u00a0a player attacks within a certain window of taking damage\u00a0they restore some of\u00a0their lost health. The pacing itself\u00a0changes\u00a0thanks to this mechanic and an aggressive playstyle becomes the most efficient way to play. This health regain style is so efficient that someone figured out\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/bloodborne-no-level-gun-heal-challenge-video\/\">how to beat<em> Bloodborne<\/em> without healing<\/a> themselves, which is much more difficult in other\u00a0<em>Souls\u00a0<\/em>titles.<\/p>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/static2.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/bloodborne-cover.jpg\"\/><\/figure>\n<p>Another element that really aids\u00a0<em>Bloodborne<\/em>\u00a0and differentiates it from other\u00a0<em>Souls<\/em>\u00a0games is its approach to storytelling. While not &#8220;simple&#8221; by any means,\u00a0<em>Bloodborne&#8217;s\u00a0<\/em>central plot is more straightforward than any other FromSoftware title. The game is not as open-ended as\u00a0<em>Dark Souls<\/em> and does not hide as much of its lore in item descriptions. In previous\u00a0<em>Souls<\/em>\u00a0titles, the lore had to be pieced together from the most obscure lines of texts in little corners of the world.\u00a0Thanks to the many\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/dark-souls-fan-theories-shocking\/\"><em>Dark Souls<\/em>\u00a0fan theories<\/a>\u00a0online, the story became much easier to follow.\u00a0<em>Bloodborne<\/em>\u00a0took a different route with its narrative, making it a touch more obvious. It never loses Miyazaki&#8217;s trademark mystique, but\u00a0makes\u00a0basic elements of its story much more accessible to a wider audience.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"related-single\"><strong>RELATED:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/elden-ring-vs-bloodborne-2-vs-dark-souls-4\/\">Elden Ring is Bad News for Bloodborne 2, but It&#8217;s Even Worse for Dark Souls 4<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>This simplification of certain narrative elements works well with\u00a0<em>Bloodborne&#8217;s<\/em>\u00a0status as a PS4 exclusive. There are a lot of console exclusive games and recently\u00a0much talk of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/playstation-exclusives-pc-good\/\">PlayStation exclusives coming to PC<\/a>. While exclusivity is a controversial topic, it worked surprisingly well for\u00a0<em>Bloodborne<\/em>. The game became a system seller, driving many fans of the series to purchasing a PlayStation. More than just bringing players, the game also introduced FromSoftware&#8217;s games to new fans. Those who already had a PlayStation 4 could pick it up for their new system easily. As the game has a simpler approach compared to the other series, this made it an easier proposition for a huge new audience.<\/p>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/static0.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/Most-Difficult-Survival-Horror-Games-Bloodborne.jpg\"\/><\/figure>\n<p>The\u00a0<em>Souls<\/em>\u00a0games are no stranger to cosmic horror, as among\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/demons-souls-mind-flayers\/\">the\u00a0scariest <em>Demon&#8217;s Souls<\/em>\u00a0enemies<\/a> are the\u00a0Lovecraftian mind flayers. These creatures make horrific sounds and stalk the halls of tortured souls on a deadly patrol. Before\u00a0<em>Bloodborne<\/em>, this was the most eldritch that the series got. In contrast, the PlayStation 4 exclusive eventually reveals the real terror behind the &#8220;beast-blood&#8221; plague focused on in the first half to be creatures from the stars, perfectly blending gothic and cosmic horror.<\/p>\n<p>By combining these two types of horror,\u00a0<em>Bloodborne<\/em>\u00a0adds a deep layer of mystery. This cosmic horror plotline is somewhat hidden, and the full terror of it is only revealed under certain conditions. While other FromSoftware games have hidden bosses,\u00a0<em>Bloodborne<\/em>\u00a0again implements them differently. Bosses like Ebrietas or the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/bloodborne-gherman-moon-presence-boss-fight-tips\/\">Moon Presence<\/a>\u00a0are totally optional and easy to miss and fighting them shows the player a hidden level to the narrative, with eldritch beings at the core of the game&#8217;s problems. Sure, other\u00a0<em>Souls<\/em>\u00a0games have secret bosses that add new information, but none quite establish a whole underlying narrative as the hidden enemies of\u00a0<em>Bloodborne<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Indeed, one important part of the game is finding out\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/bloodborne-high-insight-secrets-effects\/\">how to use Insight in <em>Bloodborne<\/em><\/a>. It is a mechanic that\u00a0denotes how many of\u00a0game&#8217;s\u00a0cosmic horrors you can see. This is a touch different to a hidden wall. When the Insight level is above 40, strange things happen. Giant, fleshy spider-like creatures become visible all over Yharnam, clung to buildings, watching, and waiting.<\/p>\n<p>In short,\u00a0<em>Bloodborne\u00a0<\/em>takes the formula of the\u00a0<em>Souls<\/em>\u00a0games and refines it. The game plays quicker, more aggressively and focusses more on psychological, gothic, and cosmic horror than any other game in the series. It goes even further, taking all of these radical shifts in playstyle, themes and even healing\u00a0into\u00a0a high-demand\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/playstation-exclusives-pc-first-party-third-party-bloodborne\/\">PlayStation exclusive<\/a>.
