One of the most nostalgic aspects of old games is the pixel art style. Gaming devices back in the 80s and 90s didn’t have the graphic capabilities or the next-gen features of the Xbox Series X and PS5<\/a>, but they still had their charm. Modern games like\u00a0Stardew Valley<\/em> and\u00a0Cyber Shadow<\/em>\u00a0even try to recreate the 8-bit aesthetic with some success. The Game Boy and its various versions are well-known devices that gamers used primarily in the 90s to play video games, but cameras for these devices are mysterious to many.<\/p>\n

The first version of the Game Boy came out in 1989, followed by the Game Boy Color<\/a> nine years later in 1998. Between these two handhelds, Japan released an attachment that would work for both of them called the Game Boy Camera. This camera is only capable of producing greyscale photos with a max resolution of 128 x 112 pixels and 4-color palette options. The Game Boy Camera didn’t do well for Nintendo and it\u00a0ceased production in 2002. But today, certain photographers are stretching the limits of this early camera to create some impressive photos.<\/p>\n

Game Boy Camera<\/a> photographers have found beauty in its pixelized limitations. There is no way to control focus on a Game Boy Camera or the exposure settings. Game Boy Cameras also have a 30 picture limit until the digital cartridge is full. These photographers push the limits of what such a limited camera can achieve by using colorizing adapters to add color, or using homemade techniques to attach more modern lenses as an extension of the Game Boy Camera.<\/p>\n
