Since the studio’s formation back in 1995,\u00a0Remedy Entertainment\u00a0<\/strong>has become intrinsically linked with ambitious single-player experiences, developing\u00a0titles like\u00a0Max Payne, Alan Wake, Quantum Break,\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a02019’s\u00a0<\/a>Control<\/a>. <\/em>However, it\u00a0appears the developer will be making a big departure from this reputation in the near future, revealing today that it’s aiming to revolutionize co-operative combat through an upcoming title known as\u00a0Vanguard<\/strong>.<\/em><\/p>\n

Speaking to GamesIndustry.biz about the project, Remedy<\/a>‘s CEO Tero Virtala revealed that\u00a0Vanguard\u00a0<\/em>will be the studio’s first steps into the free-to-play market and an ambitious new experience that relies on the\u00a0core pillars of the developer’s other games. “In the co-op space, there are a few highly successful games,” the CEO states while talking about the project, elaborating on where he thinks this lack of success stems from.<\/p>\n

“In PvP and team-vs-team, the content creation is not that big of an issue because the other players are the content,” he tells the publication, noting that\u00a0no two\u00a0multiplayer matches are ever the same\u00a0because there’s no need for scripted encounters. The way Virtala sees it, the “the content treadmill” has always held co-op games back, as they rely on hand-crafted\u00a0scenarios that are unable to pose a unique experience every time. It means co-op games struggle to keep player interest\u00a0in comparison to titles like\u00a0Fornite<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>or\u00a0Overwatch<\/em>.<\/em>\u00a0Remedy has sought to find a\u00a0solution\u00a0to this problem through\u00a0Vanguard,\u00a0<\/em>which Virtala hopes will offer a long-serving co-operative experience that can “tell stories via the world and exploration.”<\/p>\n

Vanguard\u00a0<\/em>allegedly checks off another big box for Remedy, which\u00a0claims it has been\u00a0pushing to own “at least three expanding game brands.” Although that could extend to any franchise, the way Virtala sees it, the simplest way to cultivate a long-running IP in the modern games’ market is to create a\u00a0service-based structure<\/a>. It means the team can continue to update the franchise\u00a0for years and keep it prevalent in the public eye, which is seemingly the idea behind\u00a0Vanguard’s\u00a0<\/em>free-to-play strategy.<\/p>\n

That’s not to say the company has abandoned traditional single-player experiences though. During the interview, Virtala reveals that Remedy is currently split into four teams working on five games. The developers behind\u00a0Control\u00a0<\/em>are creating\u00a0the studio’s next AAA experience, which the\u00a0company has teased\u00a0will be a continuation of\u00a0Control\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0Alan Wake’s\u00a0<\/em>storyline<\/a>. Meanwhile, a second team is currently developing two unannounced titles that have been funded by Epic Games. The third and fourth teams are working on the upcoming\u00a0CrossfireX\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0Vanguard,\u00a0<\/em>confirming that\u00a0fans of Remedy Entertainment\u00a0can expect much more to come in the near future.<\/p>\n
