The edit, made by user<em> Benjamin Crew<\/em> and posted to Vimeo, shows\u00a0Michael Keaton&#8217;s\u00a0Batman in its entirety but redesigned as a silent film.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a fitting re-edit of\u00a0the film, considering Burton draws so much influence from the silent era, especially\u00a0the dark and gothic look of a film movement known as <em>German Expressionism.\u00a0<\/em>German expressionism is a term broadly used to describe a style of German silent horror films made in the early 20th century that came to its peak in the 1920s. These films used\u00a0exaggerated physical acting, gothic imagery, and deep shadows. Often tackling themes of insanity and death, they can be seen as representing the German population&#8217;s reaction to the horrors of <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/wonder-woman-danny-trejo-deepfake\/\">World War I.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"related-single\"><strong>RELATED:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/batman-superman-films-dc-comics-sequels\/\">DC Announces Comics Based On Old School Batman And Superman Films<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>One of the more notable examples of a German Expressionist film is Fritz Lang\u2019s 1927 science fiction horror film <em>Metropolis<\/em>, which has a clear influence on Burton&#8217;s work and other films such as <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/star-wars-rise-skywalker-wasted-coincidence\/\">George Lucas&#8217;\u00a0<em>Star Wars<\/em><\/a> and<em> Blade Runner<\/em>. Other notable German Expressionist films include the infamous\u00a0vampire film\u00a0<em>Nosferatu\u00a0<\/em>and the carnival-themed horror film\u00a0<em>The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari.\u00a0<\/em>Burton&#8217;s German expressionist influence can be seen in nearly all of his filmography, especially in\u00a0<em>Edward Scissorhands<\/em>\u00a0and <em>Beetlejuice.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/517637788?app_id=122963\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; fullscreen; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen title=\"Batman: The Silent Motion Picture\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>While Burton relied heavily on the stylistic silent era for his design of the fictional Gotham City,\u00a0recent live-action versions of Batman&#8217;s hometown have gone for a more realistic\u00a0approach. Christopher Nolans renowned<em> Dark Knight<\/em> trilogy famously created a more \u2018real\u2019 and \u2018grounded\u2019 <em>Batman<\/em> movie universe, using\u00a0the industrial landscape of Chicago to portray the city\u00a0instead of exaggerated sets. In <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/godzilla-vs-kong-batman-v-superman-problem\/\">Zack Snyder\u2019s <em>Batman\u00a0v Superman<\/em><\/a>, Gotham is imagined as a poor and rundown city. The Oscar-winning film <em>Joker<\/em> also portrayed the city in this light, but during an unspecified time period around the late \u201970s or early \u201980s. Furthermore, the Fox TV show <em>Gotham <\/em>was shot primarily in New York City, once again going for a more true to life approach.<\/p>\n<p>However, it looks like\u00a0the Caped Crusader may return to his gothic roots in the <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/batman-hot-wheels-batmobile\/\">upcoming Matt Reeves-directed film titled The Batman<\/a>, which stars Robert Pattinson\u00a0as the billionaire turned vigilante.\u00a0Reeves shot the film primarily in London, England, and Glasgow, Scotland, taking advantage of the old and gothic architecture\u00a0of these cities for his version of Gotham.<\/p>\n<p>A sequel is already confirmed for the film and a spin-off series about the Gotham police department is being produced for\u00a0HBO Max.
