The studio was responsible for publishing the likes of <i>Demon\u2019s Souls<\/i> in the US but they had no hand in the game\u2019s development. The same can also be said for Vanillaware\u2019s <i>Dragon Crown <\/i>and <i><a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/13-sentinels-aegis-rim-best-recommendations-games\/\">13 Sentinals: Aegis Rim<\/a>. <\/i>So this feature focuses entirely on their talents as developers, not as a publishing studio.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">10 <\/span>Etrian Odyssey IV<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static3.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/2-Etrian-Odyssey-IV.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>Released in 2013 for the Nintendo 3DS, dungeon-crawling JRPG <i>Etrian Odyssey IV <\/i>is largely considered to be the best game in the series. Additionally, it\u2019s also the most approachable entry in the series and arguably has one of the most compelling storylines in the franchise.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">9 <\/span>Shin Megami Tensei IV: Apocalypse<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static0.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/4-Shin-Megami-Tensei-IV-Apocalypse.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>Released for the Nintendo 3DS in 2016, <i>Shin Megami Tensei IV: Apocalypse<\/i> is both a follow-up and rework of <i>Shin Megami Tensei IV<\/i> released three years prior. <i>Apocalypse <\/i>follows a brand new timeline to its predecessor so the game is more welcoming to newcomers and features quality of life changes that make it a much better game.<\/p>\n<p>Its visual design and art style are fantastic and manages to rise above the limitations of the 3DS\u2019s graphical capabilities. In addition, the game feels more in line with <i>SMT: Nocturne<\/i> which is a favorite entry for many fans of the franchise.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">8 <\/span>Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey Redux<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static1.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/SMT-strange-journey-reduc.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>Released in 2017 for the Nintendo 3DS, <i>Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey Redux<\/i> is a remastered and expanded version of the Nintendo DS original that released in the US in 2010. It\u2019s a dungeon-crawling RPG with mechanics similar to that of the <i>Etrian Odyssey <\/i>series.<\/p>\n<p>The game mixes elements of classic science fiction movies along with the dark fantasy horror themes that the series has become known for. Just like its predecessors, it features multiple endings, an amazing amount of depth, and a tough but fair learning curve.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">7 <\/span>Persona 3 FES<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static0.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/persona-3.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>First released on the PlayStation 2 in 2006, <a href=\"http:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/persona-3\"><i>Persona 3<\/i><\/a> was the first game that really captured\u00a0RPG fan&#8217;s attention\u00a0taking the <i>Shin Megami Tensei <\/i>series into the mainstream. It\u2019s the Social Links and the organic way that it develops the story and characters that set the series apart from JRPGs.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">6 <\/span>SMT Devil Summoner 2: Raidou Kuzunoha Vs. King Abbadon<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static0.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/devil-summoner-2.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>Released in 2009 on the PlayStation 2, <i>Shin Megami Tensei Devil Su<\/i><i>mmoner 2: Raidou Kuzunoha Vs. King Abbadon <\/i>is the direct sequel to the first game released on the same system featuring Raidou.<\/p>\n<p>Just like its predecessor it\u2019s set in an alternate universe in 1930s Japan and features real-world characters from that time period. At first glance, it doesn\u2019t look like it\u2019s much of a departure from the first game but the quality of life improvements and more refined combat made for a much better game.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">5 <\/span>Digital Devil Saga 1 And 2<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static1.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Digital-Devil-Saga-2.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>The <i>Digital Devil Saga\u00a0<\/i>is a two-part series of post-apocalyptic JRPGs that were released in two parts that released in 2004 and 2004 respectively. Even by <i>Shin Megami Ten<\/i><i>sei <\/i>standards,\u00a0<i>Digital Devil Saga <\/i>is dark, violent, and as grim as it gets.<\/p>\n<p>The characters, setting, and story development is\u00a0among most of the gripping in the SMT universe. In addition, <i>Digital Devil Saga <\/i>is a far more <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/ps2-rpgs-better-stories-than-final-fantasy-7-remake\/\">character-driven story<\/a> than many of its sister series where many of the characters are blank slates for the player to develop. Character customization is still a very strong point for DDS, however, and the game\u2019s difficulty is far more forgiving than the core <i>SMT <\/i>series.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">4 <\/span>Persona 4 Golden<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static0.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/persona-4-golden-port-sega.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>First released on the PlayStation 2 in 2008, <a href=\"http:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/persona-4\"><i>Persona 4 <\/i><\/a>like its predecessor placed its players in the shoes of a student transferring to a new high school. It features new cutscenes, post-game content, and a brand new protagonist to choose from at the start of the game.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">3 <\/span>Radiant Historia: Perfect Chronology<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static0.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/5-Radiant-Historia-Perfect-Chronology.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>Released on the Nintendo 3DS in 2018, <i><a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/nintendo-best-3ds-rpgs-ranked-metacritic\/\">Radiant Historia: Perfect Chronology<\/a>\u00a0<\/i>is an expanded edition of the Nintendo DS original which launched in 2011. Taking inspiration from 16-Bit classics like <i>Chrono Trigger <\/i>and <i>Final Fantasy VI<\/i> <i>Radiant Historia <\/i>features beautifully rendered sprites and one of the best stories in two generations of handheld systems.<\/p>\n<p>Just like <i>Chrono Trigger, Radiant Historia <\/i>features a storyline based around time travel but it goes the extra mile in its execution of multiple timelines and intertwining storylines.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">2 <\/span>Persona 5 Royal<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static3.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/persona-5-royal-art.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>Released worldwide in 2016 for the PlayStation 3 and the PlayStation 4 the original version of <i>Persona 5 <\/i>is one of the highest-rated games across two generations. In addition, the combat was more refined and exploration was made far more interesting with the addition of a grappling hook. <i>Persona 5 Royal <\/i>is by far the best version of the best JRPGs in a generation.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">1 <\/span>Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static1.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/Shin-Megami-Tensei-3-Nocturne.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>First released on the PlayStation 2 in 2003, <i>Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne \u2013 <\/i>or <i>Lucifer\u2019s Call <\/i>in Europe \u2013 is still regarded by fans of the series as one of if not the best entry in the <i>Shin Megami Tensei <\/i>franchise. A remaster is <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/shin-megami-tensei-3-remaster-release-date-leak-rumor\/\">due to be released in the West in 2021<\/a> on the Nintendo Switch to prepare fans for the upcoming\u00a0<em>Shin Megami Tensei V\u00a0<\/em>which is also set to be released later the same year.<\/p>\n<p>The level of customization is off the charts with so much flexibility and freedom in how the player wants their version of the Demi-Fiend to develop.
