Exclusive titles can be a real pain for gamers. Although competition between brands is inherently a good thing for consumers, it’s a shame that many gamers haven’t experienced franchises like\u00a0Halo<\/em><\/a>,\u00a0The Legend of Zelda<\/a>,<\/em> or\u00a0Uncharted<\/a>.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

One other exclusive series that has\u00a0eluded\u00a0many gamers is\u00a0Ratchet & Clank<\/a>.\u00a0<\/em>Insomniac Games’ action-platformer has been loyal to Sony’s blue brand since its inception, with the next title,\u00a0Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart<\/a>,\u00a0<\/em>set to release on the PlayStation 5 in June of this year. The sci-fi series<\/a>‘ exclusivity is particularly disappointing\u00a0for Nintendo Switch owners, as Switch owners are, generally speaking, the biggest advocates of mascot platformers<\/a>. Thankfully, Nintendo’s console has tons of excellent platforming titles<\/a> of its own that can scratch the itch of anyone who likes the look of\u00a0Ratchet & Clank.<\/em><\/p>\n

10 <\/span>Yooka-Laylee<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

A game that is considered a spiritual successor to\u00a0the classic\u00a0Banjo-Kazooie<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>was always going to draw attention.\u00a0Playtonic Games’\u00a0Yooka-Laylee<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>started life on Kickstarter, where it broke multiple records<\/a> for the money it raised. Unfortunately, the game’s huge expectations weren’t reached, and many people were disappointed by the final product. The Nintendo Switch version scored 75 on Metacritic, which is 17 points less than what\u00a0Banjo-Kazooie<\/em>\u00a0achieved.<\/p>\n

Despite failing to match the qualities of\u00a0Banjo-Kazooie,\u00a0<\/em>Playtonic Games’ platformer is still worth checking out for anyone interested in the genre. The first level, in particular, is extremely well-designed, as players can easily get lost in it for hours finding all of the secrets and hidden items<\/a> tucked around every corner.<\/p>\n

9 <\/span>Sonic Mania Plus<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

From one of the freshest new IPs in platforming to one of the oldest still around today, Sonic<\/em> burst onto the scene in 1991 as Sega hoped their blue hedgehog would be a worthy competitor to Nintendo’s Mario<\/em><\/a>. Unfortunately, Sonic’s iconic character design and the memorable first game have been let down by numerous disappointing releases.<\/p>\n

Sonic’s difficulty adapting to modern gaming<\/a> was best exemplified in 2017 when the latest main series game,\u00a0Sonic Forces<\/em><\/a>, was woefully received by fans and critics. In contrast, Sonic\u00a0Mania<\/a>,\u00a0<\/em>a game that remixes older stages, is now considered one of the franchise’s best-ever entries.<\/p>\n

8 <\/span>Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Another mascot character that has survived through many decades and changes to gaming is\u00a0Donkey Kong<\/a>.\u00a0<\/em>Unlike\u00a0Sonic,\u00a0<\/em>Donkey Kong\u00a0<\/em>doesn’t get many new games, but the ones that do release are usually great quality.<\/p>\n

Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze<\/em><\/a>\u00a0is\u00a0<\/em>one of many Wii U games that has been ported to the Nintendo Switch, and it is today considered to\u00a0be\u00a0of a similar quality to\u00a0the\u00a0classic SNES game\u00a0Donkey Kong Country<\/a>.\u00a0<\/em>The Nintendo Switch edition adds a handful of new features, including New Funky Mode, which adds Funky Kong as a playable character. Funky Kong is far more skilled than Donkey Kong, making the game considerably easier.<\/p>\n

7 <\/span>Hollow Knight<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

The Metroidvania genre has had a welcome resurgence in recent years. Hollow\u00a0Knight<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>is just one of the many fantastic entries into the retro genre during the eighth generation of console. The game itself impressed in almost every key area, as the gameplay, music, difficulty balance, and overall level design make\u00a0Hollow Knight\u00a0<\/em>one of the Metroidvania genre’s best ever titles.<\/p>\n

Along with its excellent\u00a0Nintendo Switch Metascore of 90,\u00a0Hollow Knight\u00a0<\/em>picked up numerous awards, including\u00a0Independent Game of the Year at the Australian Game Awards<\/a>.<\/p>\n

6 <\/span>Guacamelee! 2<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

From one excellent modern Metroidvania to another,\u00a0Guacamelee! 2<\/em><\/a>\u00a0was released\u00a0<\/em>in August 2018 on PC and PlayStation 4 before coming to the Nintendo Switch a couple of months later. Much like\u00a0Hollow Knight,\u00a0<\/em>DrinkBox Studios’\u00a0Guacamelee! 2\u00a0<\/em>is faithful to the Metroidvania games of old but brings plenty of new ideas to the table to differentiate it from other titles.<\/p>\n

Along with its unique art style,\u00a0Guacamelee! 2\u00a0<\/em>stands out with its innovative combat styles, inspired by a common professional wrestling style in Mexico known as\u00a0Lucha Libre.<\/p>\n

5 <\/span>\u014ckami HD<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

The Legend of Zelda<\/em>-inspired\u00a0\u014ckami HD<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>may not have as many platforming sections as Ratchet & Clank\u00a0<\/em>or any other game on this list, for that matter. However, Clover Studio’s classic adventure is certainly worth checking out for quite simply being one of the best third-person adventures of all time.<\/p>\n

Despite the universal praise and 93 Metascore that\u00a0\u014ckami\u00a0<\/em>received when it was initially released on the PlayStation 2, the game struggled to perform sales-wise<\/a>. Thankfully,\u00a0the Nintendo Wii\u00a0port and multiple\u00a0\u014ckami HD <\/em>releases\u00a0have finally given the adventure the commercial success it always deserved.<\/p>\n

4 <\/span>Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

The most recent game to hit stores on this list,\u00a0Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s<\/a><\/em> Fury<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>takes the Wii U game\u00a0Super Mario 3D World<\/em> to the Nintendo Switch while adding\u00a0Bowser’s Fury <\/em>for\u00a0<\/em>good measure. The\u00a0Super Mario 3D World\u00a0<\/em>section of the game plays similarly to the Nintendo 3Ds game\u00a0Super Mario 3D Land<\/em><\/a>, with its small but tightly designed levels.\u00a0Meanwhile, Bowser’s Fury<\/em> offers one large stage that is broken up into small islands.<\/p>\n

Bowser’s Fury\u00a0<\/em>has numerous interesting mechanics that may reappear in the next main series Mario<\/em> title, such as Bowser being a constant presence who sporadically pops up to wreak havoc upon players as they try to find Cat Shrines.<\/p>\n

3 <\/span>Celeste<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

It’s worthing stating right off the bat that\u00a0Celeste\u00a0<\/em>isn’t for the faint of heart<\/a>. The game is one of the most difficult platformers ever released, putting it alongside notoriously difficult games like\u00a0Super Meat Boy<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0I Wanna Be The Guy. Celeste<\/em>‘s difficulty\u00a0<\/em>certainly isn’t a gimmick, though, as it ties into the game’s story about the protagonist’s mental health difficulties as she attempts to scale an imposing mountain.<\/p>\n

Moreover, the difficulty never feels unfair as the playable character has some of the most well-crafted movement mechanics in platforming history, which makes\u00a0Madeline a joy to control<\/a>.<\/p>\n

2 <\/span>Ori and the Will of the Wisps<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

The third and final Metroidvania game to appear on this list,\u00a0Ori and the Will of the Wisps<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>may have only released last year, but it’s already being touted as one of the greatest Metroidvanias of all time. The game is a great choice for\u00a0Ratchet & Clank\u00a0<\/em>fans as two of the game’s main strengths mirror Insomniac Games’ franchise: the platforming and combat mechanics.<\/p>\n

However, platforming and combat aren’t all that’s great about\u00a0Ori and the Will of the Wisps<\/em>, as the game improves upon its predecessor by\u00a0implementing more open-world mechanics. The game becomes very open at around the half-way point, and players are free to take a break from the main story to complete side quests and activities.<\/p>\n

1 <\/span>Super Mario Odyssey<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

There probably won’t be too many people gasping in surprise that\u00a0Super Mario Odyssey<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>appears on this list. As is common for gaming’s most iconic character,\u00a0Mario\u00a0<\/em>once again raised the bar for all platforming titles with\u00a0Super Mario Odyssey,\u00a0<\/em>which has become one of the most critically acclaimed games of all time, exemplified by its\u00a0impressive 97 Metascore.<\/p>\n

Super Mario Odyssey\u00a0<\/em>has tons of hours of content, wonderfully design levels, and a fantastic mechanic that lets players “capture” living things and objects around the stages to give players an advantage, which is an ingenious way to make the gameplay feel varied and engaging.<\/p>\n
