In addition to being eerie in its own right, the series is giving off some serious\u00a0Jordan Peele vibes, bringing to mind his acclaimed film<em> Get Out<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Per Amazon Prime Video&#8217;s\u00a0official synopsis for the\u00a0series, <em>THEM<\/em> is a limited anthology series that begins with the first season, <em>Covenant<\/em>. Set in the 1950s, <em>Covenant <\/em>focuses on a black family who recently moved from North Carolina to Los Angeles during the period known as The Great Migration. Now residing in an all-white neighborhood, the family finds themselves facing &#8220;malevolent forces&#8221; that threaten to destroy them.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"related-single\"><strong>RELATED:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/get-out-original-ending-theaters\/\">Why Get Out&#8217;s Original Ending Never Played In Theaters<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The Great Migration refers to\u00a0the movement of over 6 million African Americans from\u00a0the rural Southern United States to more urban areas of the country during the early 20th century until about\u00a01970.\u00a0This was largely due to the poor economic conditions in the south, as well as the\u00a0racial segregation and discrimination African Americans faced\u00a0under\u00a0Jim Crow laws\u00a0at the time.\u00a0The teaser puts together a fast-paced montage of frightening suburban images. It\u2019s unclear as to what exactly is going on here, but it certainly\u00a0brings to mind the work of <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/jordan-peele-keke-palmer-daniel-kaluuya-horror-movie\/\">renowned horror director Jordan Peele.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"200\" height=\"113\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/YULbffrh9aM?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Peele&#8217;s directorial debut,\u00a0<em>Get Out<\/em>,<em>\u00a0<\/em>took the world by surprise when it premiered back in 2017. The film went on to garner\u00a0high praise from audiences and critics alike, even winning Peele <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/take-look-insane-energy-behind-scenes-oscars\/\">an Academy Award<\/a> for best original screenplay, a rarity for horror films. Set in modern times,\u00a0<em>Get Out\u00a0<\/em>tells the story of a young African American man named Chris (Daniel Kaluuya) who goes to meet his white girlfriend&#8217;s parents and spend the weekend at their upscale country home. Although they seem friendly at first, it becomes clear that something more sinister is afoot. Over the course of the film, Chris discovers that the family has been kidnapping other African\u00a0Americans and\u00a0transplanting their minds into their victims.<\/p>\n<p>When it was released, <em>Get Out<\/em>\u00a0stood out amongst the horror genre for its overtly political and racial themes. Although horror as a genre has\u00a0often been very political in the past, the genre had become much more focused on subjects like gore and ghosts\u00a0in the years before\u00a0<em>Get Out<\/em>\u00a0was released. Peele followed this film up with another heavily political horror film <em>Us,\u00a0<\/em>which saw<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/black-panther-killmonger-bad-guy\/\"> <em>Black Panther<\/em> stars<\/a>\u00a0Lupita Nyong\u2019o and Winston\u00a0Duke as\u00a0a married couple who face off against terrifying doppelgangers during their vacation. <em>Us<\/em> dealt more heavily with issues of class in America but was still released to high critical praise.<\/p>\n<p>Peele&#8217;s films have sparked a trend\u00a0of more racially and politically inclined\u00a0horror, such as last year&#8217;s <em>Antebellum<\/em> and the<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/lovecraft-country-creator-direct-tomb-raider-sequel\/\"> HBO supernatural series <em>Lovecraft Country<\/em><\/a><em>.\u00a0<\/em>Now, it seems like <em>THEM<\/em> will follow in these footsteps, peeling back the layers of America&#8217;s history of\u00a0racism and segregation.\u00a0Lena Waithe and Little Marvin will serve as executive producers on the show.
