Super Smash Bros. Ultimate<\/em><\/strong> fans have had a lot on their plates lately, with the game regularly releasing new DLC fighters since it\u00a0launched in 2018. Even now, despite\u00a0a worldwide pandemic, the game\u00a0has brought fans some of the series’ most requested characters to date just months apart from each other, including\u00a0Steve from\u00a0Minecraft<\/em><\/a> and\u00a0Sephiroth from\u00a0Final\u00a0Fantasy 7<\/i>. However, there are some characters fans still wish were\u00a0in the platform fighter.<\/p>\n

Just one month ahead of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate<\/em><\/a>‘s\u00a0release, it was revealed that Rex from\u00a0Xenoblade Chronicles 2<\/em> would be added to the game as a Mii Costume, due to how new Rex’s game\u00a0was when\u00a0Ultimate<\/em>\u00a0was well into\u00a0development. While fans\u00a0mourned this loss, many\u00a0were excited to see Pyra and Mythra join Smash<\/em>\u00a0just last week as the\u00a0fourth character in Fighters Pass Vol. 2. Now,\u00a0Smash<\/i>\u00a0director Masahiro Sakurai has elaborated more on why Rex didn’t make it in.<\/p>\n

During the recent Mr. Sakurai Presents “Pyra\/Mythra” video<\/a> detailing the new character, Sakurai mentioned he originally would have liked to include Pyra and Rex as a “duo” character like Ice Climbers. Today, in\u00a0his latest column published in\u00a0Japanese video game magazine Famitsu, Sakurai explained that implementing Rex and Pyra that way was deemed “impossible” by the development team, despite their efforts.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0Smash<\/i> director explains that from the get-go, he imagined Rex and Pyra working\u00a0together as a duo character, with both\u00a0characters fighting as one alongside each other. However,\u00a0out of all the characters in\u00a0Super Smash Bros. Ultimate<\/em>,<\/a> Pyra and Rex’s designs are by far the most detailed, Sakurai notes. When comparing the characters to Ice Climbers, Sakurai mentioned how those who characters are virtually identical, not causing nearly as much stress on processing power as two unique characters fighting as a pair might.<\/p>\n

The director mentioned that although he and the development team tried a variety of strategies to get Rex and Pyra fighting together, he had no choice but to shelve Rex for the time being. Of course, it seems fans are still happy regardless of the situation, as competitive players now argue that Pyra\/Mythra, Mythra in particular<\/a>,\u00a0seems to\u00a0be one of the game’s best fighters so far.<\/p>\n

Of course,\u00a0Super Smash Bros. Ultimate<\/em> isn’t done rolling out fighters just yet, as two more are slated to release as part of the game’s Fighters Pass Vol. 2. Fans have speculated that anyone from Crash Bandicoot<\/a> to Master Chief could make it into the game at this point, but for now only time\u00a0will tell.<\/p>\n
