Move over Jason Voorhees, there\u2019s a new unstoppable killer in town. Elizabeth Banks\u00a0has signed on to direct a new thriller for Universal<\/strong><\/a> titled\u00a0Cocaine Bear<\/em><\/strong>,\u00a0a film set to be produced by Phil Lord and Chris Miller,\u00a0the duo\u00a0best known for their work on animated films like\u00a0Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs<\/em> and T<\/em>he Lego Movie.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

Cocaine Bear<\/em> will be based\u00a0on the true story\u00a0of a 175-pound black bear who consumed the contents of a duffle bag filled with more than 70 pounds of cocaine that had been\u00a0dropped from an airplane by a local drug smuggler. The bear was later found dead due to\u00a0an apparent drug overdose. The story was first reported by the New York Times<\/em>\u00a0in 1985 and was based on events that took place in Kentucky that year. Specific plot details are unknown at this time, but Deadline described the film as a \u2018thriller\u2019\u00a0based on an untitled spec written by Jimmy Warden. So, hopefully, audiences can expect this cocaine-fuelled bear to wreak havoc on 1980s Kentucky.<\/p>\n

While Banks made a name for herself acting in comedic films such as\u00a0Wet Hot American Summer\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0The 40-year Old Virgin,\u00a0<\/em>she\u2019s recently seen some success taking on a role behind the camera. Banks made her directorial debut in 2015 with the Anna Kendrick-led musical\u00a0comedy sequel\u00a0Pitch Perfect 2, <\/em>which tells the story of\u00a0an all-female a cappella singing group who try to beat out a competing German musical group in a world singing championship.\u00a0<\/em>Banks recently served as writer, producer, and director for the 2019\u00a0Charlie’s Angels\u00a0<\/em>reboot, in which she also co-starred alongside future Happiest Season<\/em> star Kristen Stewart<\/a> and Naomi Scott.<\/p>\n

Lord and Miller are the talented writing, directing, and producing duo behind many successful animated and live-action movies\/tv shows. As producers, they won an Academy Award for Best Animated\u00a0Feature\u00a0for their work on the hit 2018 superhero film Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse<\/em><\/a>.\u00a0<\/em>They are also responsible for creating the cult classic TV show\u00a0Clone High,\u00a0<\/em>which is reportedly making a comeback on HBO Max.<\/p>\n

Lord and Miller were hired by Lucasfilm to direct\u00a0Disney and Lucasfilm’s\u00a0Solo: A Star Wars Story<\/em>, based on a script by Empire Strikes Back\u00a0<\/em>writer Lawrence Kasdan. However, the duo was famously fired from Solo<\/em><\/a> in 2017 citing \u201ccreative differences\u201d and replaced by director Ron Howard.<\/p>\n

Banks appears to have a good relationship with Universal, as she is also on board to direct a reboot of The Invisible Woman<\/em><\/a> for the studio. Though the film is unrelated to\u00a0Leigh Wannell’s The Invisible Man,\u00a0<\/em>it is being developed by Universal as part of their recent efforts to focus on filmmaker-driven projects for the studios’ library of classic monsters.<\/p>\n

Cocaine Bear<\/em> <\/strong>is scheduled to begin filming in summer 2021.<\/p>\n
