However, director Simon McQuoid is pretty self-aware of the dangers that might pose for those unfamiliar with the time travel disaster brought on by Raiden to define the <em>Mortal Kombat<\/em> universe.<\/p>\n<p>So despite <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/mortal-kombat-fans-notice-trailer\/\"><em>Mortal Kombat\u2019s<\/em>\u00a0trailer being packed with easter eggs<\/a> and references to the franchise\u2019s lore, being a reboot film opens the door for audiences to become acquainted with all the fighters at the same pace, an opportunity McQuoid is eager to seize. With <em>Mortal Kombat<\/em> reportedly already lining up potential movie sequels in case the first one proves to be a success, producers will want to make sure to get this video game movie done the right way.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"related-single\"><strong>RELATED: <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/mortal-kombat-johnny-cage-movies\/\">Mortal Kombat: This Character Should Not Be In The Movies<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>During an interview with CinemaBlend on the\u00a0set of <em>Mortal Kombat<\/em> back in 2019, McQuoid recognized how important it is for the movie not to alienate those who are foreign to the video games, and that\u2019s why he \u201cwanted every character to have their introduction.\u201d By doing this, the director intends for\u00a0viewers to get a proper origin story for each fighter, just like it\u2019s usually done in the Marvel Cinematic Universe or even in some <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/mortal-kombats-characters-mocap-meat-drahmin\/\"><em>Mortal Kombat<\/em> games<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"200\" height=\"113\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/QJHY4ggYCk4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/mortal-kombat-movie-fatalities-trailer\/\">The<em> Mortal Kombat<\/em>\u00a0trailer<\/a> alone already suggests some alternate takes on a few characters&#8217; beginnings, such a Jax losing his arms after being on the receiving end of a fatality from Sub-Zero instead of Ermac or Kano apparently being one of Earthrealm\u2019s good guys, even if he\u2019s certain to flip sides as soon as he gets the chance. For McQuoid, this forced him to think over sequences twice as he found himself balancing fan service in a way that wouldn\u2019t just land for <em>Mortal Kombat 9<\/em> fans.<\/p>\n<p>This is perhaps one of the reasons why <em>Mortal Kombat<\/em>\u00a0would appear to place much of its plot focus on newcomer Cole Young, a seemingly ordinary human branded with a familiar dragon-shaped birthmark, who\u2019s destined to fight against Outworld for a mysterious reason that not even franchise co-creator Ed Boon himself might know. The same could be said of <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/mortal-kombat-scorpion-solo-movie\/\">Scorpion\u2019s usage in the <em>Mortal Kombat<\/em> trailer<\/a>, as he and Sub-Zero get the starring roles they deserve as the franchise\u2019s most widely recognized characters.<\/p>\n<p>Even if the Shirai Ryu and Lin Kuei ninjas are quite popular, it\u2019s great to see McQuoid catering to all.
