The name\u00a0Shin Megami Tensei 5<\/em><\/strong> would seem to imply that relatively few\u00a0Shin Megami Tensei<\/em> games have been released over the franchise’s lifespan of more than thirty years. Five games in thirty years definitely would seem like a sparse timeline, but as any\u00a0Shin Megami Tensei<\/em> veteran knows, there’s way more games in this series than a game called\u00a0Shin Megami Tensei 5<\/em><\/a> would imply.\u00a0Shin Megami Tensei<\/em> just keeps spinning off of itself, even as the core series keeps running strong. Atlus has found no shortage of ways to interpret the\u00a0Megami Tense<\/em>i\u00a0<\/em>formula and present it in different lights.<\/p>\n

Longtime fans of\u00a0Shin Megami Tensei<\/em> are probably able to keep all the games straight by now. However, this is a time where fans might just be getting into the series.\u00a0Persona 5<\/em>‘s huge success<\/a> is bringing fans into its parent series, and\u00a0Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne<\/em>‘s upcoming Switch port is bound to generate some new\u00a0SMT<\/em> fans too. Players are under no obligation to play every\u00a0Shin Megami Tense<\/em>i\u00a0<\/em>game to understand what’s happening, since they’re almost all standalone stories. Still, it’s valuable to have a surface awareness of all the games that have gotten\u00a0Shin Megami Tensei<\/em> to where it is today.<\/p>\n

The first\u00a0Shin Megami Tensei\u00a0<\/em>game<\/a> released exclusively in Japan in 1992, kicking off the franchise well as a large success.\u00a0In the first game, a Japanese scientist accidentally summons a tremendous demonic invasion that ravages the Earth and prompts other nations to wage war in an attempt to stop the demons. The game takes place thirty years after the first demonic incursion and sees the player make choices between law and chaos. Shin Megami Tensei 2<\/em> is technically a direct sequel, taking place many years later as the player character — who believes he is the Messiah — sets out into a world still overrun by demons.<\/p>\n

Shin Megami Tensei<\/em>‘s habit of unconnected stories emerged with\u00a0Shin Megami Tensei 3: Nocturne<\/a>,\u00a0<\/em>which was also an early example of\u00a0Megami Tensei<\/em>‘s habit of high school aged protagonists. In\u00a0SMT 3: Nocturne<\/em>, a demonic cult plunges the world into a fiendish apocalypse and the game’s teenage protagonist becomes a powerful being called the Demi-fiend. After that was\u00a0Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey,<\/em> which sent the player to Antarctica to investigate demonic forces there.\u00a0Shin Megami Tensei 4<\/em> differed significantly from past games in that it was set in medieval times, focusing on a samurai tasked with stopping a mysterious villain turning humans into demons. It got its own spinoff in the form of\u00a0Shin Megami Tensei 4: Apocalypse.<\/em><\/p>\n

There’s a few noteworthy spinoffs of\u00a0Shin Megami Tensei<\/em>. One of the earliest was\u00a0Shin Megami Tensei: If…<\/em>, which focused on fighting demons in a high school instead of a large apocalyptic scale, and ended up inspiring the\u00a0Persona\u00a0<\/em>franchise<\/a>.\u00a0Shin Megami Tensei: Nine<\/em> was supposed to be Atlus’ stab at an online multiplayer\u00a0SMT<\/em> game, but it didn’t quite shake out as planned. This spinoff set between the first and second\u00a0Shin Megami Tensei<\/em> games instead released as a singleplayer experience.\u00a0Shin Megami Tensei: Imagine<\/em> succeeded where\u00a0Shin Megami Tensei: Nine<\/em> failed, developing an acclaimed MMORPG set in the same time as\u00a0Nine.<\/em><\/p>\n

There’s tons of spinoffs outside of\u00a0Shin Megami Tensei\u00a0<\/em>that still belong to the\u00a0Megami Tensei<\/em> series and still sometimes use the\u00a0Megami Tensei\u00a0<\/em>or\u00a0Shin Megami Tensei<\/em> moniker. One of the most important is\u00a0Digital Devil Story: Megami Tensei,\u00a0<\/em>which actually came out before the first\u00a0Shin Megami Tensei<\/em> games.\u00a0Digital Devil Story<\/em> and its sequel are based on a series of science fantasy books by\u00a0Aya Nishitani.\u00a0Digital Devil Story<\/em> is responsible for the entire\u00a0Megami Tensei<\/em> family’s themes<\/a> of demon summoning and turn-based RPG combat — in other words, all roads lead to\u00a0Digital Devil Story.<\/em><\/p>\n

The\u00a0Persona\u00a0<\/em>franchise is another huge spinoff of\u00a0Shin Megami Tensei.<\/em>\u00a0Persona<\/em> can be split up into two halves consisting of three games each.\u00a0Revelations: Persona\u00a0<\/em>established the franchise’s themes of teenagers using the Personas within them to fight supernatural forces, and\u00a0Persona 2<\/em>‘s two versions,\u00a0Innocent Sin<\/em> and\u00a0Eternal Punishment<\/em>, carried them on. Notably, both games involve fighting demons attacking the physical world, much like\u00a0SMT.<\/em> In contrast,\u00a0Persona 3, 4,\u00a0and\u00a05<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>all limit teenagers’ Persona powers to another part of reality, where they can still fight demons and somehow affect the human world. They’re also considerably more stylized in terms of art and music than the first\u00a0Persona<\/em> games, distancing thematically from\u00a0SMT.<\/em><\/p>\n

These are only two of the most important spinoffs of\u00a0Shin Megami Tensei<\/em>; there’s a great many more.\u00a0Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Children<\/em> is a more kid-friendly take on\u00a0SMT,\u00a0<\/em>borrowing colorful aesthetics from\u00a0Pokemon<\/em> over the course of several entries mostly released in the early 2000s.\u00a0Last Bible<\/em> is another franchise targeted at a broader audience, using monsters instead of demons and largely taking place in medieval settings. The\u00a0Devil Summoner<\/em> franchise offers broad takes on devil summoning RPGs, from games set in sci-fi future Japan to Japan in the 1920s.\u00a0There’s also\u00a0Majin Tensei,<\/em> a series of strategy games from the 1990s and 2000s. One thing’s for sure: Atlus hasn’t run short<\/a> on ways to make use of the franchise.<\/p>\n

It should be stressed again that players just getting into\u00a0Shin Megami Tensei\u00a0<\/em>don’t need to feel obligated in any way to play any of these many previous games. Atlus has produced an unbelievable amount of content for this IP, and playing through all these games would be a Herculean task.\u00a0Shin Megami Tensei 5,<\/em> like so many<\/a> of its predecessors, is a standalone title, and doesn’t require any previous knowledge of an ongoing plot to play. Fans should feel free to jump into\u00a0Shin Megami Tensei<\/em> at its long-awaited Switch exclusive. For anyone who enjoys the newest\u00a0Shin Megami Tensei\u00a0<\/em>game, though, there’s clearly no shortage of options to scratch that\u00a0Shin Megami Tensei<\/em> itch. In fact,\u00a0Shin Megami Tensei 5<\/em> might just be the catalyst for a retro revival of many of Atlus’ greatest works.<\/p>\n

Shin Megami Tensei 5<\/em><\/strong> will release on Nintendo Switch in 2021.<\/p>\n
