A lot of players may have started with\u00a0<em>World,\u00a0<\/em>due to its greater accessibility relative to the older games, while more still jumped on earlier in the franchise&#8217;s life with the Playstation or <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/nintendo-best-3ds-rpgs-ranked-metacritic\/\">3DS titles<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"related-single\">RELATED:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/greatest-handheld-games-in-history-metacritic-scores\/\">The 10 Best Handheld Games Of All Time (According To Metacritic)<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Wherever players stand in the timeline, new or old, their <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/amazing-monster-hunter-world-cosplays\/\">love for the series<\/a> stands strong. It was impossible to predict how popular the charming Japanese titles would become in recent years, and just how many new players would be joining guilds and hunting their way to the top. A lot of these same players, however, may not have experienced the series prior to\u00a0<em>World,<\/em> and may not know where to start.\u00a0<em>Monster Hunter<\/em>, now nearly two decades old, has plenty of wonderful titles to explore. For anyone looking to fill the gap before <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/monster-hunter-rise\/\"><em>Rise<\/em><\/a> releases in a couple of weeks, this compilation may shed light on some of the best ports and releases well-deserving of a second look.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">11 <\/span>Monster Hunter Freedom &#8211; PSP<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static2.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/mh1.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>The first game, on the Playstation 2, and its counterpart\u00a0<em>Freedom\u00a0<\/em>on the PSP, released back-to-back with the latter being an upgraded and enhanced version of its console sibling.\u00a0<em>Freedom<\/em> added to the overall experience, providing slightly more content as opposed to the PS2&#8217;s release.<\/p>\n<p>Newcomers to the series found themselves slightly more at home with the handheld port, which provided them with more accessibility on the go, and felt more like what the developers intended from the multiplayer mechanics. Now, almost <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/playstation-games-20-years-old-2021\/\">20 years after its release<\/a>, the original game may be clunky and dated, but it still holds a surprising amount of charm for what it is.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">10 <\/span>Monster Hunter Freedom 2 &#8211; PSP<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static1.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/fr2.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>The franchise&#8217;s second entries,\u00a0<em>Monster Hunter 2\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0<em>Freedom 2<\/em> were much-welcome upgrades to the first game&#8217;s formula, fine-tuning the mechanics and adding new equipment and quests to enhance the experience. While these two followed the same cycle as the first, releasing on the PS2 and PSP respectively,\u00a0<em>MHF2<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/10-canceled-ps2-games-you-never-knew-existed\/\">had to sacrifice<\/a> more of its predecessor&#8217;s components in order to make room on the handheld console&#8217;s drives, instead vouching for new quests and minor content to fill the gaps.<\/p>\n<p>Regardless of its downfalls, the second entries&#8217; additions to the game&#8217;s quickly-growing fanbase were impressive, and left players excited for future installments.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">9 <\/span>Monster Hunter Freedom Unite &#8211; PSP<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static0.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/MH-Rise-Other-Games-8-MH-Freedom-Unite.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>Where\u00a0<em>Freedom 2<\/em> left off,\u00a0<em>Monster Hunter Freedom Unite<\/em> picked up and carried. Intended as an enhanced edition of\u00a0<em>MHF2,<\/em> proposed to fill in the empty space of its predecessor,\u00a0<em>Unite<\/em> added an enormous amount of refurbishment to the series&#8217; previous entry.<\/p>\n<p>With\u00a0<em>Monster Hunter&#8217;s<\/em> gameplay growing more and more addictive, and\u00a0<em>Unite&#8217;s<\/em> additions to the roster (including fan-favorite Tigrex, alongside new questlines and equipment) brought this title into a lot of players&#8217; top-ten lists.\u00a0<em>Unite\u00a0<\/em>was also the last mainline entry to release on a Sony console, instead moving toward new horizons with Nintendo&#8217;s hardware suiting the company&#8217;s needs more sufficiently.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">8 <\/span>Monster Hunter Tri Ultimate &#8211; Wii U &amp; 3DS<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static3.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/monster-hunter-tri.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p><em>Monster Hunter Tri<\/em> was not only the first in the series to release exclusively on Nintendo consoles, with\u00a0<em>Tri\u00a0<\/em>releasing on the Wii only to be followed by its enhanced &#8220;Ultimate&#8221; editions on the Wii U and 3DS, but also a stepping-on point for a lot of new players.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"related-single\">RELATED:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/10-best-nintendo-wii-games-ever-made-according-metacritic\/\">The 10 Best Nintendo Wii Games Ever Made (According To Metacritic)<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>With new mechanics, new monsters, companions, and an intriguingly beautiful setting,\u00a0<em>MH3<\/em> became a favorite for Nintendo gamers looking for a more dedicated <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/multiplayer-game-best-decade-metacritic\/\">multiplayer experience<\/a>, which later grew into a much bigger crowd with the\u00a0<em>Ultimate&#8217;s<\/em> portability and general upgrades from the original.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">7 <\/span>Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate &#8211; 3DS<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static1.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/monster-hunter-4-ultimate.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>Following\u00a0<em>MHTri<\/em>&#8216;s success on Nintendo hardware,\u00a0<em>Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate<\/em> was a perfect next step for Capcom, releasing exclusively on the 3DS with quite a few new elements to keep fans interested.\u00a0<em>MH4U<\/em> traded in\u00a0<em>Tri<\/em>&#8216;s swimming mechanics for a much more vertical experience, a gimmick amplified by the newly added Insect Glaive alongside\u00a0more <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/video-game-level-design-2020-best-top\/\">in-depth environments<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Alongside the aerial playstyle,\u00a0<em>4U\u00a0<\/em>provided players with a much more visually striking style, and brought in quite a few tie-ins with other games, including palico costumes and player armor modeled after famous Nintendo characters and Capcom classics.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">6 <\/span>Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate &#8211; Switch<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static2.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/MHG-960x540.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p><em>Monster Hunter Generations<\/em>, releasing at the end of the 3DS&#8217; cycle, was a wonderful look back at the series&#8217; origins. Aptly titled\u00a0<em>Generations<\/em> for its larger-than-ever roster, and world map spanning several of the previous games&#8217; locales and villages. In opposite fashion from the original titles,\u00a0<em>MHG<\/em> was ported to the Switch as an enhanced ultimate edition, adding more quests and upgraded accessibility.<\/p>\n<p>While Switch players loved the game for its top-tier culmination of all the previous games, the release of <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/monster-hunter-world\/\"><em>Monster Hunter World<\/em><\/a> between\u00a0<em>MHG\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0<em>MHGU<\/em> meant that a lot of players who started with\u00a0<em>World<\/em> were disappointed to see that\u00a0<em>Generations<\/em> was a more difficult approach to the series&#8217; core.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">5 <\/span>Monster Hunter Stories &#8211; 3DS<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static3.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/monster-hunter-stories-art.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p><em>Monster Hunter Stories<\/em>\u00a0on the 3DS was a surprising spin-off for the series, taking a solid departure from the franchise&#8217;s staple tone. Where the original games have a lot of charm, they&#8217;re still grounded in a more harsh realism as opposed to\u00a0<em>Stories&#8217;<\/em> more\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/pokemon-weird-fan-games\/\"><em>Pokemon-<\/em>esque appearance.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"related-single\">RELATED:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/best-japanese-exclusive-nintendo-3ds-games\/\">The 10 Best 3DS Games That Never Left Japan<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><em>Stories\u00a0<\/em>surprised players with its beautiful story, and appealed to casual gamers with its simplified turn-based gameplay and vivid art style. The first entry was popular enough that Capcom decided on producing a sequel,\u00a0<em>Wings of Ruin<\/em>, releasing on the Switch later this year after\u00a0<em>Monster Hunter Rise.<\/em><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">4 <\/span>Monster Hunter World &#8211; PC, PS4, Xbox One<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static0.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/Monster-Hunter-World-Pro-Tips-1.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>Nobody could have predicted just how popular\u00a0<em>Monster Hunter World<\/em>\u00a0would be. <em>World took<\/em>\u00a0the series in a much different direction with its advanced graphics and mechanics, as well as upgraded accessibility for new players who were unfamiliar with\u00a0<em>Monster Hunter&#8217;s<\/em> core difficulty.\u00a0Hitting the community by storm on PC, PS4, and the Xbox One,\u00a0<em>MHW<\/em> became one of the best-selling and most popular games in the series, <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/best-video-games-metacritic-decade\/\">let alone the decade<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>With its numerous additions to the universe, and breathtaking scale, it&#8217;s hard to imagine how future entries will advance, but it&#8217;s equally exciting to watch the community grow in the core of\u00a0<em>Monster Hunter&#8217;s<\/em> fellowship.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">3 <\/span>Monster Hunter Rise &#8211; Switch, PC<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static1.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/monster-hunter-rise-is-coming-to-pc.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>Coming off the popularity of\u00a0<em>World<\/em>, one can imagine how hard it would be for Capcom to live up to its western audience&#8217;s expectations with a new title. Much to the surprise of newcomers,\u00a0<em>Rise\u00a0<\/em>was announced to be a Switch exclusive on launch,\u00a0and would come to PC much later.<\/p>\n<p>From what Capcom has shown so far in their numerous presentations and demonstrations this last month,\u00a0<em>Rise\u00a0<\/em>appears to be a wonderful homecoming for the series, returning to its peak on Nintendo consoles. As\u00a0<em>Rise<\/em> releases later this month, the community is excited to see what the new monsters and companions have to offer, and\u00a0how the franchise will continue to evolve with its future releases.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">2 <\/span>Mobile\u00a0Games<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static3.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/3-1.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>Though the <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/best-mobile-games-2020\/\">mobile marke<\/a>t never really took off for\u00a0<em>Monster Hunter<\/em>, seeing as it&#8217;s not exactly the type of game players wanted on their phones, Capcom still delivered on a handful of spin-off titles. A few of these were region-locked, though the rest didn&#8217;t find the player base they were looking for regardless of location or release date, and most (if not all) went completely under the radar for fans.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"related-single\">RELATED:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/playstation-now-ps2-best-worst-games\/\">PlayStation Now: 5 Best PS2 Games On The Service (&amp; 5 Worst)<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Among the few that were released are\u00a0<em>Monster Hunter Explore,\u00a0<\/em><em>Monster Hunter Riders, Monster Hunter Dynamic Hunting,\u00a0<\/em>and a Japanese exclusive\u00a0<em>Monster Hunter i<\/em>. None of the mobile games released to rave reviews, most actually getting quite the opposite.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">1 <\/span>Japan-Exclusive Spin-Offs<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static2.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/pjimage-8.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>Before Capcom realized how big the potential for the series was, Japan got a fair bounty\u00a0of exclusives, from games to merch to a full-on Universal Studios exhibition with animatronics and actors.<\/p>\n<p>One of the more popular series revolves around Airou, <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/best-cats-ranked\/\">the felyne icon<\/a>, there are also several experimental titles using the classic formula.\u00a0<em>Frontier Online\/G<\/em>\u00a0were 360-Live-exclusive versions, similar to the originals with a flowier, floatier design. The\u00a0<em>Monster Hunter Diary<\/em> games were a lot more favorable in concept, following a cuter, more simplified adventure taking place in a village of felynes (and poogie) working together to defeat their monstrous foes.
