Actor Freddie Prinze Jr. recently sat down to discuss his career and his role in the Punky Brewster<\/em> revival. During the interview, he discussed his time as a voice actor for the animated Disney XD series Star Wars Rebels<\/em><\/strong><\/a>, in which he played Kanan Jarrus, a Jedi Padawan\u00a0who survived the purge<\/a> and went on to help form the Rebel alliance before the events of the original Star Wars<\/em> trilogy. In the interview, Prinze Jr. also revealed that his character was originally supposed to leave the show much earlier than he did.<\/p>\n

In the interview with Collider, Prinze Jr. discussed landing the role of Kanan Jarrus and the absurd levels of\u00a0secrecy invoked in making a Star Wars<\/em> show. Talking about the audition process, he said, “When I went in, I didn\u2019t know it was Star Wars <\/em>because they\u2019re so stupidly secretive about everything. Who cares? Just tell people you\u2019re making a Star Wars <\/em>cartoon.”\u00a0He goes on to talk about\u00a0meeting Rebels\u00a0<\/i>creator\u00a0<\/i>Dave Filoni, whose other animated credits include Star Wars: The\u00a0Clone Wars<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0the\u00a0upcoming spin-off series\u00a0The Bad Batch<\/em><\/a>. <\/i>Filoni also co-created\u00a0the\u00a0live-action series The Mandalorian <\/em>for\u00a0Disney Plus. After poking fun at Filoni’s signature cowboy hat, Prinze Jr. reveals that Disney didn’t actually want him for the part, but Filoni fought for him and he was cast later that day.<\/p>\n

An interesting bit of information that he also reveals is that he and Filoni actually wanted Kanan\u00a0to die at the end of season 2\u00a0at the hands of fallen Sith Lord Darth Maul<\/a>.\u00a0After miraculously surviving being cut clean in half by Obi-Wan Kenobi in\u00a0Star Wars: Episode 1 –\u00a0The Phantom\u00a0Menace,\u00a0<\/i>Darth Maul returned in\u00a0The Clone Wars <\/em>animated series as a reoccurring antagonist. Maul returned once again in Rebels<\/em>, acting as a corrupting influence\u00a0on Kanan Jarrus’s Padawan learner<\/a>, Ezra Bridger. Maul would eventually meet his fate at the hands of his old rival Obi-Wan Kenobi, who delivered\u00a0the finishing blow, killing Maul for good this time.<\/p>\n

Kanan Jarrus did eventually die on\u00a0Star Wars Rebels<\/em>, but not at the hands of Maul. In the season 4 episode\u00a0titled Jedi Knight,\u00a0<\/em>Kanan was\u00a0killed by an explosion at an Imperial fuel depot after using the force to\u00a0save\u00a0his friends from the blast. Even though Prinze Jr. and Filoni had originally intended for\u00a0Kanan to die in the second season, Disney said no.<\/p>\n

Speaking on the matter, Prinze Jr. said, “Dave and I talked about me dying at Maul\u2019s hand, at the end of Season 2, but then the same people who didn\u2019t want me for the project suddenly said, ‘No, he can\u2019t die. He has to be in every episode.’ So, I guess I won them over, at some point.” He also stated that Filoni and the animators deserve the credit for Kanan’s powerful death scene since there\u00a0was no dialogue\u00a0involved.<\/p>\n

Rebels<\/em> could have been a very different show if Kanan was killed at the end of season 2. Perhaps Ezra Bridger would have followed Maul to the dark side of the force, or maybe he would seek revenge for his fallen master. At the end of the day,\u00a0Star Wars\u00a0<\/em>is an ever-changing story<\/a>. We now know that a lot\u00a0of Maul’s storyline in Clone Wars<\/em> and Rebels<\/em> was originally\u00a0intended for George Lucas’s abandoned sequel trilogy, which would have seen the fallen Sith become the godfather of crime in the galaxy after the fall of the Empire.<\/p>\n
