The\u00a0Mortal Kombat<\/em> franchise is no stranger to weird species and unique characters<\/a>, to say the least. From\u00a0Outworld to the Netherrealm to Earth and everywhere in between, the team behind\u00a0Mortal Kombat<\/em> has a lot of wiggle room\u00a0when it comes to the design and backstories of their characters.<\/p>\n

For instance,\u00a0Mortal Kombat 11<\/em> featured a hive-mind race of bee-like creatures that fit perfectly into the established\u00a0Mortal Kombat<\/em> universe, while\u00a0Mortal Kombat 3<\/em> featured minotaur, gods, reptiles, and everything in between. Anything goes in this brutal series, and some species represented in the franchise are\u00a0particularly<\/em> out there.<\/p>\n

10 <\/span>Minotaurs<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Minotaurs in\u00a0Mortal Kombat<\/em>\u00a0were created when\u00a0the Centaurians were cursed by another race in Outworld. They lost their two hind legs iconic of centaurs in mythology but kept their horns and humanoid appearance.<\/p>\n

The most well-known example of a minotaur in\u00a0Mortal Kombat<\/em> is Motaro, who was a sub-boss in\u00a0Mortal Kombat 3<\/em> and a playable character in\u00a0Mortal Kombat Armageddon.<\/em><\/p>\n

9 <\/span>Zombies<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

That’s right \u2013 the most popular horror monster of all time even makes an appearance in\u00a0Mortal Kombat<\/em>, albeit only for one character in one game. Liu Kang is one of the most iconic human\u00a0fighters\u00a0in the franchise, and in\u00a0Mortal Kombat Armageddon<\/em> he is brought back to life by Raiden to defend Earthrealm.<\/p>\n

Zombies in\u00a0Mortal Kombat<\/em> are not conscious, and their spirits are separated. Liu Kang in\u00a0Armageddon<\/em> could do nothing but sit by and watch his body do Raiden’s will, for better or worse<\/a>.<\/p>\n

8 <\/span>Tarkatans<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Tarkatans are a very recognizable species for their unsettling mouth size and equally unsettling tooth size. They are almost like shark-people, with rows\u00a0of sharp teeth, yellow eyes, and retractable claws that extend both out of their forearms and their elbows.<\/p>\n

One example of a Tarkatan in the franchise is Baraka, a playable General in Shao Khan’s army. Mileena is technically half-Tarkatan<\/a> and half-Edenian as the product of genetic experimentation.<\/p>\n

7 <\/span>Oni<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Oni in real-world mythology<\/a> are\u00a0a type of Japanese spirit, but in\u00a0Mortal Kombat<\/em> the term is used to define a specific sub-genre of demons from the Netherrealm. They take many forms but are generally represented as hulking hideous creatures with otherworldly human features.<\/p>\n

Oni in\u00a0Mortal Kombat<\/em> have been shown to be ape-like or human-like in appearance. Moloch is an example of a more horrendous Oni, while Quan Chi is an example of\u00a0one who changed their form over time.<\/p>\n

6 <\/span>Edenians<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

The Edenians are much like humans but possess super-human powers and an incredibly long lifespan. They are said to be descendants from the Gods, which gives them their unnaturally long life and combat prowess<\/a>. Edenians vary a lot in their magical abilities too, with no two sharing the same magical affinity.<\/p>\n

Edenians have been\u00a0represented throughout the\u00a0Mortal Kombat\u00a0<\/em>franchise since the beginning, in characters such as Kitana, Daegon, Taven, Jade, and Sindel the Queen of Edenia.<\/p>\n

5 <\/span>Elementals<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Elementals are technically their own species in\u00a0Mortal Kombat<\/em>, even though plenty of characters have control over the elements. Elementals are different in that they have\u00a0mastered<\/em> a specific element, and then take the form of that element in some capacity. Raiden, then, doesn’t count as a thunder elemental but a thunder god.<\/p>\n

There have been two major elementals in the\u00a0Mortal Kombat<\/em> franchise: Blaze and Tremor. Blaze is shown as a fully-fledged fire elemental, while Tremor has the powers of an earth elemental without having changed much of his appearance.<\/p>\n

4 <\/span>Kytinns<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Kytinns are a hive-mind race, like wasps or\u00a0Star Trek<\/em>‘s Borg,\u00a0<\/em>that operate as individual sentient beings connected to a larger consciousness. They appear humanoid\u00a0but also feature stingers, hard carapace-like skin, and host thousands of smaller bugs inside their body to release at any time.<\/p>\n

Not much is known<\/a> about the Kytinn species \u2013 D’Vorah from\u00a0Mortal Kombat X<\/em> is the only one of her kind represented in the franchise.<\/p>\n

3 <\/span>Naknadas<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Naknada are one of the newest races introduced to the\u00a0Mortal Kombat<\/em> series and are also one of the most enigmatic \u2013 they don’t even have individual names. The Naknada are Shao Kahn’s Outworld slaves who built his Coliseum who\u00a0are goblin-like in appearance with multiple appendages.<\/p>\n

The only known member of this species is The Kollector, from\u00a0Mortal Kombat 11<\/em>. Their name is an indicator of the job they do, but aside from this, the Naknada are\u00a0utterly ambiguous.<\/p>\n

2 <\/span>Shokans<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Shokans are half-human half-dragon monstrosities with anywhere from two to six arms who exist within an Outworld realm called Kuatan. The Shokan are responsible for the Minotaur curse on the Centaurians, and are perhaps the most fearsome warriors in all of Outworld<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Shokans are instantly recognizable and some of the most iconic characters in\u00a0Mortal Kombat<\/em>. Prince Goro, Kintaro, and Sheeva are three of the most well-known Shokans in the franchise.<\/p>\n

1 <\/span>Vampires<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Mortal Kombat <\/em>Armageddon<\/em>\u00a0featured\u00a0not just Zombies, but also Vampires. There is only one Vampire shown in the franchise,\u00a0<\/em>Nitara from\u00a0Mortal Kombat Deadly Alliance<\/em> and\u00a0Armageddon<\/em>. Nitara has large bat-like wings and must feed on other beings to survive \u2013 while Shang Tsung needs souls to live, Nitara needs blood.<\/p>\n

Vampires in\u00a0Mortal Kombat<\/em> are much the same as they are described in real-life myths. They suck blood from the neck, are morally ambiguous, and are self-serving. The Mortal Kombat<\/em> team stated they would like to see more of Nitara’s kind represented in the game, just don’t get your hopes up for a Twilight crossover.<\/p>\n
