There are multiple\u00a0Call of Duty<\/em><\/strong> games with active playerbases right now, and these games continue to see fresh content from developers. A recent\u00a0Call of Duty: Warzone<\/em> Season 2 update set internet usage records<\/a> because so many players downloaded it, and\u00a0Call of Duty: Mobile<\/em> just released its Season 2 Day of Reckoning update as well. The\u00a0Call of Duty<\/em> franchise is huge, but it has been notably absent from the esports scene for much of its existence.\u00a0The\u00a0Call of Duty\u00a0<\/em>series only entered the esports world with the creation of the Call of Duty League in 2020.<\/p>\n

Since then,\u00a0Call of Duty<\/em> has proven it can draw an audience. 2021 is already off to a good start for the franchise, as the CDL’s first Major event of the year saw 131,000 viewers watch OpTic Chicago vs. Atlanta FaZe play\u00a0Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War<\/em>. The Atlanta FaZe won the Major event<\/a>, which offered a good prize pool of $200,000.\u00a0Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War<\/em>‘s fast-paced action makes for exciting competitive play, but the League wants to see more of other games in the series as well.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0CDL’s\u00a0Chief Revenue Officer, Brandon Snow, believes that\u00a0Call of Duty<\/em> is in a special position to shine in the esports arena. When asked how\u00a0Call of Duty<\/em> would measure up to other popular first-person shooter esports titles like\u00a0Rainbow Six Siege<\/em> and\u00a0CS:GO<\/em>, Snow said\u00a0Call of Duty<\/a><\/em> games benefit from “franchise strength.” He elaborates further, saying “Call of Duty\u00a0<\/em>is as big as Star Wars.\u00a0<\/em>It\u2019s been around for 10-plus years, and over 200 million people have played the game. That\u2019s the foundational difference.”<\/p>\n

Snow also wants more competitive possibilities for titles like\u00a0Call of Duty: Warzone<\/em> and\u00a0Call of Duty: Mobile<\/em>. He states that the Call of Duty League sees\u00a0Warzone<\/em> as an “opportunity to talk to more casual gamers,” but the League still recognizes the game’s appeal and has plans for\u00a0Warzone<\/em> to “play a part of our esports product around the\u00a0Call of Duty<\/em> franchise.” It\u00a0may draw a slightly different crowd than\u00a0Black Ops Cold War<\/em>, but Warzone<\/em>\u00a0still struggles with a veritable Bingo board of bugs and hacks<\/a>\u00a0that need to be ironed out to make it a smooth competitive experience.<\/p>\n

As for\u00a0Call of Duty: Mobile<\/em>, the\u00a0CDL\u00a0has competitive plans for it too. Snow says that amateur tournaments for\u00a0Call of Duty: Mobile<\/em><\/a> last year were “a great success,” and there will be “future plans for\u00a0Call of Duty: Mobile<\/em>\u00a0esports for 2021 very soon.” The inclusion of\u00a0Call of Duty: Mobile<\/em> into esports territory widens the playing field for even more gamers who don’t play on PC to enjoy competitive events. Though PC gaming still dominates the the esports scene, the Call Duty League seems focused on making competitive esports an option for all\u00a0Call of Duty<\/em> players, no matter their platform.<\/p>\n
