The\u00a0Borderlands<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>franchise is rife with references, pop culture nods, and tie-ins to other games in the series.\u00a0Borderlands 3<\/em>, for example, starts soon after the\u00a0Lilith and the Battle for Sanctuary<\/em> DLC for\u00a0Borderlands 2,\u00a0<\/em>while the praised\u00a0Tales from the Borderlands<\/em> takes place between the two.<\/p>\n

After Telltale Games went out of business, for a while it was incredibly difficult to get a copy of\u00a0Tales from the Borderlands.\u00a0<\/em>The point-and-click spinoff game was rereleased early in 2021<\/a>, making the adventures of Rhys and Fiona accessible once again. The game ties into the main franchise in many ways, especially when it comes to guest characters.<\/p>\n

10 <\/span>Set\u00a0Between Borderlands 2 & The Pre-Sequel<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Tales from the Borderlands<\/em> takes place between\u00a0Borderlands 2\u00a0<\/em>and Borderlands 3<\/em>. The first chapters are all set just a short time after the events of the second game, whereas the last two take place right around the same timeframe as\u00a0The Pre-Sequel,<\/em>\u00a0which was also set before the events of Borderlands 3<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Tales from the Borderlands<\/em> features new characters to the series and sees the return of some old favorites, all of whom tie into the overall narratives presented in the Borderlands<\/em> series. There isn’t a point where the story is completely isolated, everything is connected for a reason.<\/p>\n

9 <\/span>Just Like In The Main Series, The\u00a0Game Revolves Around A Vault<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Tales from the Borderlands\u00a0<\/em>deviates from the gameplay of the main games<\/a> in a lot of ways, but it doesn’t change one core aspect of\u00a0Borderlands<\/em>: the search for vaults across the universe. The game is centered around Rhys and Fiona each exploring their side of the same story, which the player has a choice in.<\/p>\n

The ending of the game is entirely dependent upon the choices that the player makes throughout. In the regular\u00a0Borderlands<\/em> games, there is a lack of such choice, making the experience of eventually opening the vault that much more personal in Tales<\/em>.<\/p>\n

8 <\/span>Rhys Will Remember That<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

In\u00a0Borderlands 3<\/em>,\u00a0several characters from\u00a0Tales from the Borderlands\u00a0<\/em>come back into play. On Promethea, the player runs into Rhys,\u00a0a man who once wanted to be the next Handsome Jack and is now head of the Atlas corporation.<\/p>\n

After completing a quest line with him, Rhys asks the player whether he should keep his new mustache or shave it. The text “Rhys will remember that” pops up no matter what decision is made, an obvious reference to\u00a0Tales from the Borderlands\u00a0<\/em>choice system.<\/p>\n

7 <\/span>Vaughn\u00a0Becomes A Bandit Leader<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Vaughn, in\u00a0Tales from the Borderlands,\u00a0<\/em>is an accountant for the Hyperion corporation. After the destruction of Helios in\u00a0Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel,<\/em> not much is known about what happened to him \u2013 then in\u00a0Borderlands 3<\/em>, he shows up again, now as the leader of his very own bandit clan.<\/p>\n

Vaughn was a nervous man in\u00a0Tales from the Borderlands,\u00a0<\/em>but in\u00a0Borderlands 3<\/em> he seems to mostly have overcome this anxiety and proves a valuable asset<\/a> to the Vault Hunter.<\/p>\n

6 <\/span>Athena Is Playable In The Pre-Sequel<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Athena, the gladiatorial greek-goddess-inspired Vault Hunter, appears in\u00a0Tales from the Borderlands\u00a0<\/em>after Handsome Jack’s death. She now lives in Hollow Point with Janey Springs. She is a relatively minor character in\u00a0Tales from the Borderlands<\/em> who is captured by Mordecai and Brick.<\/p>\n

This leads into\u00a0The Pre-Sequel<\/em> opening and ending scenes, and Athena makes a return as a playable Vault Hunter in her recollection to Lilith.<\/p>\n

5 <\/span>Krieg DLC Secret Handsome Jack Reference<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Psycho Krieg and the Fantastic Fustercluck<\/em> was the fourth DLC for\u00a0Borderlands 3<\/em> and focused on Krieg, the playable psycho from\u00a0Borderlands 2.\u00a0<\/em>If the player looks outside of the map boundaries within this DLC, though, there is a secret<\/a> reference to a main plot point from\u00a0Tales from the Borderlands.<\/em><\/p>\n

The mask of Handsome Jack is shown with a needle pointing towards its eye. In\u00a0Tales from the Borderlands<\/em>, Rhys uses a similar needle on his bionics to force the holographic AI of Handsome Jack\u00a0out.<\/p>\n

4 <\/span>Catch a Riiiiiiiiiiiide With Scooter<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

In the second episode “Atlas Mugged,” Tales from the Borderlands\u00a0<\/em>brings back the fan-favorite character Scooter from\u00a0Borderlands 2<\/em>.\u00a0His catchphrase is used for the title of the third episode “Catch a Ride,” the iconic motto and name of his vehicle company.<\/p>\n

Tales from the Borderlands\u00a0<\/em>is officially the last game that Scooter makes an appearance in. If you’re a fan of the backwoods mechanic, be prepared for feels.<\/p>\n

3 <\/span>The Finale To Handsome Jack’s Story<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Handsome Jack\u00a0is undoubtedly the most iconic character from the\u00a0Borderlands<\/em> franchise, and possibly one of the best villains of all time. While the Vault Hunter killed his physical body in\u00a0Borderlands 2<\/em>, the player must choose whether or not to rid the universe of Jack’s presence forever.<\/p>\n

Handsome Jack had his mind backed up into an AI and\u00a0can be heard mocking<\/a>\u00a0Rhys throughout the game as a disembodied voice of consciousness.<\/p>\n

2 <\/span>Zer0 Shows Up In The First Mission in Tales…<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Another favorite from\u00a0Borderlands 2\u00a0<\/em>is the assassin Zer0<\/a>. In the first episode of\u00a0Tales from the Borderlands<\/em>, appropriately titled “Zer0 Sum,” Zer0 shows up looking for the Gortys core and\u00a0kills Bossanova in a grand race.<\/p>\n

Zer0 is not a playable character and has minimal involvement in the story \u2013\u00a0he re-appears in the last episode \u2013 but his interactions spur the narrative onward.<\/p>\n

1 <\/span>… And Mad Moxxi Can Be Heard Flirting With Zer0<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

When Zer0 kills Bossanova in the first episode, he calls Mad Moxxi<\/a> to update her on his search for the Gortys core. While she doesn’t make an appearance in-game, Moxxi can be heard flirting with Zer0 during this call.<\/p>\n

She tells him that his reward for finding the core will be “long, hard, and powerful” to which Zer0 appropriately responds, “Innuendo.”<\/p>\n
