Sony<\/strong><\/a> recently announced that the release of\u00a0Venom: Let There Be Carnage<\/b>\u00a0<\/em>is postponed once again and will now premiere\u00a0on September 17, 2021. The superhero sequel was previously slated to open on the same weekend as Universal\u2019s Fast and Furious 9<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n

Let There Be Carnage<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>is the\u00a0<\/em>direct sequel to 2018\u2019s\u00a0Venom<\/em>. The original was directed by\u00a0Zombieland\u2019s<\/em>\u00a0Ruben Fleischer and starred Tom Hardy as Eddie Brock\/Venom, Michelle Williams as Anne Weying, and Riz Ahmed as Carlton Drake\/Riot. Venom<\/em> wasn\u2019t well-received by critics — it received a 29% Tomatometer score at\u00a0Rotten Tomatoes. <\/em>Following\u00a0Venom<\/em>‘s release,\u00a0Fleischer stated that he was \u201cbummed\u201d that critics didn\u2019t like it\u00a0because it is intended to be a crowd-pleasing film.\u00a0Despite earning negative reviews, the film was a box office hit,\u00a0grossing over $850 million worldwide on a $100 million budget.<\/p>\n

In 2019, actor-turned-filmmaker Andy Serkis\u00a0was tapped to direct the sequel. Serkis is most notably known for playing Gollum in Peter Jackson\u2019s\u00a0Lord of the Rings<\/em><\/a>\u00a0trilogy and Klaw in Marvel Studios’\u00a0Black Panther<\/em>. Now, Venom: Lete There Be Carnage<\/em> is the third film he has directed to date. Serkis previously made 2017\u2019s\u00a0Breathe\u00a0<\/em>and 2018\u2019s\u00a0Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle.\u00a0<\/em>Serkis\u00a0has previously stated that he excited to be working on the sequel and while he isn’t able to divulge any details on the project, he assured fans they will not be disappointed.<\/p>\n

Tom Hardy, Michelle Williams, and Reid Scott are reprising their roles from the original. Furthermore, actor Woody Harrelson <\/a>will star as the titular villain, Cletus Kasady\/Carnage. In the comics, Cletus Kasady was a deranged serial killer who was once a cellmate of Eddie Brock\u2019s in prison. Carnage is more powerful than Venom and\u00a0can turn his arms into weapons and launch deadly objects. After breaking out of prison, Carnage went on a killing rampage and attempted to take down Spider-Man. The super-villain was introduced in\u00a0The Amazing Spider-Man<\/em>\u00a0#344 by writer\u00a0David Michelinie\u00a0and artist\u00a0Erik Larsen. The mid-credits scene of\u00a0Venom<\/em>\u00a0showed Harrelson\u2019s Carnage being kept in a maximum-security cell in San Quentin Prison.<\/p>\n

Serkis revealed that Hardy helped write the story for Venom 2<\/em> with British screenwriter Kelly Marcel (Fifty Shades of Grey & Saving Mr. Banks<\/em>). Meanwhile, Barry Waldman, Jonathan Cavendish, Edward Cheng, Howard Chen, and Ruben Fleischer are the executive producers.\u00a0Let There Be Carnage<\/em>\u00a0finished filming in 2020 and was originally slated to be released in IMAX<\/a> and premium large formats last October.<\/p>\n
