Rian Johnson is already hard at work on his next project, the original television series\u00a0Poker Face<\/strong><\/em>. The series will stream exclusively on NBCUniversal’s Peacock<\/a>. Johnson’s T-Street Productions and MRC Television will produce the 10-episode first season. Natasha Lyonne of\u00a0Orange Is the New Black<\/em> and Russian Doll<\/em>\u00a0fame will star.<\/p>\n

In addition to being the creator, Johnson is also taking on writing and directing duties. Poker Face<\/em> will be\u00a0his first-ever\u00a0original series. His previous television work includes directing three episodes of Breaking Bad<\/em>, including the Emmy-winning “Ozymandias”<\/a>. He’s most recognizable, however, for 2017’s\u00a0Star Wars: The Last Jedi<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Given the director’s track record, Poker Face<\/em> being a mystery drama is far from a surprise. His first film, Brick<\/em>, was an homage to detective noir\u00a0\u2014 set at a high school. New Hollywood whodunnits such as The Last of Sheila <\/i>and Clue <\/i>inspired his acclaimed film\u00a0Knives Out<\/i><\/a>, which featured an ensemble cast that included Chris Evans and Ana de Armas. Johnson describes Poker Face<\/i>\u00a0as a deconstruction of classic “case-of-the-week” television (think Columbo<\/em>).<\/p>\n

Lyonne, who co-created Netflix’s\u00a0Russian Doll<\/em>, called\u00a0Poker Face<\/em>\u00a0a “dream show.” So far, she’s the only member of the cast to have been revealed. This is her first project with Johnson, although the two have interacted\u00a0on Twitter before. Interestingly, Johnson\u00a0tagged Lyonne in a tweet about the\u00a0Columbo<\/em>\u00a0board game\u00a0back in 2019. It’s safe to assume the crime drama was a big influence on\u00a0Poker Face<\/em>, especially considering their similar formats.<\/p>\n

Johnson’s Breaking Bad<\/em> work is great, but Poker Face<\/em> being his debut series means we’re not sure what to expect. His films have given him\u00a0both critical and box office success, but he’s far from scandal-free. Most notably, he’s been criticized for his handling of characters in Star Wars:<\/em>\u00a0The Last Jedi<\/em><\/a>. The film that made him a household name also made\u00a0him one of the most divisive people in the biz.<\/p>\n

Peacock is also a bit of an odd\u00a0one out in the world of entertainment. Despite being “free as a bird,” it hasn’t come close to the heights reached by its competitors. It has NBC’s\u00a0The Office<\/em><\/a>, and that’s about it. When it comes time to binge, people are turning to Netflix, which is churning out new content every day. Peacock hasn’t even earned a seat at the table. New projects like Poker Face<\/em> and the Bel-Air<\/em> reboot will draw viewers in, but will those same viewers stay? At least we’re not talking about Quibi here.<\/p>\n

Poker Face<\/strong>\u00a0<\/em>will be released on Peacock\u00a0on an unspecified future date.<\/p>\n
