However, one of the great things about the gaming industry today is that the enormous amount of games releasing every year provide players with tons of alternative options to exclusive titles.\u00a0Super Mario 3D World + Bowser\u2019s Fury<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>was released exclusively on the Nintendo Switch this year to the envy of many gamers. Thankfully though, there are tons of Xbox<\/a> titles that offer similarly enjoyable platforming experiences for fans of\u00a0Microsoft’s home console.<\/p>\n

10 <\/span>New Super Lucky’s Tale<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

As the title suggests,\u00a0New Super Lucky’s Tale<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>is an expanded and improved version of\u00a0Super Lucky’s Tale,\u00a0<\/em>which was released at the end of 2017.\u00a0New Super Lucky’s Tale\u00a0<\/em>improvements include better-designed levels and much-needed\u00a0tweaks\u00a0to the game’s camera.<\/p>\n

New Super Lucky’s Tale\u00a0<\/em>certainly isn’t the most challenging platformer in the world<\/a>, but it manages to remain interesting for more experienced players with its collectathon elements. To complete the game 100%, players need to complete multiple objectives in each level, such as\u00a0collecting 300 coins\u00a0and solving\u00a0a hidden puzzle<\/a>.<\/p>\n

9 <\/span>Celeste<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

From one of the Xbox’s most laid-back platformers to one of its most testing,\u00a0Celeste\u00a0<\/em>was released at the start of 2018 and quickly drew comparisons to\u00a0Super Meat Boy<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>for its punishing but rewarding difficulty. Beating\u00a0Celeste\u00a0<\/em>normally provides a tough platforming challenge, though it only tells part of the story. Completing the game 100% is one of modern gaming’s hardest tasks<\/a>, as\u00a0players need to collect difficult-to-reach\u00a0strawberries, complete tricky B-side tapes, find the well-hidden\u00a0Crystal\u00a0Hearts, and much more.<\/p>\n

Celeste<\/em>‘s difficulty is far from being just a gimmick, as it ties into the game’s touching story.\u00a0Matt Makes Games’ platformer was extremely well-received upon release, exemplified by its whopping 94 Metascore on Xbox One<\/a>.<\/p>\n

8 <\/span>Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time<\/h2>\n

In June 2017,\u00a0Vicarious Visions and Activision teamed up to release a remake of the classic\u00a0PlayStation 1 Crash Bandicoot<\/em><\/a>\u00a0trilogy.<\/em>\u00a0The game was extremely well received, earning both critical and commercial success; consequently, talk began circulating about a brand new adventure for the\u00a0mascot platformer<\/a>. Activision didn’t disappoint and announced that they were teaming up with Toys For Bob to release a direct sequel to\u00a0Crash Bandicoot: Warped.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>was released in October 2020 and provided players with one of Crash’s best adventures yet. Much like\u00a0Celeste,\u00a0<\/em>beating the game normally is challenging enough, yet\u00a0the difficulty still manages to crank up far higher when\u00a0attempting to complete it 100%.<\/p>\n

7 <\/span>Psychonauts<\/h2>\n

Another classic platformer that has recently delighted fans with a grand return is\u00a0Psychonauts<\/a>.\u00a0<\/em>Xbox Game Studios’\u00a0Psychonauts 2<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>hasn’t been released yet, though it’s been announced and is expected to hit stores at some point this year.<\/p>\n

The original Psychonauts\u00a0<\/em>was published by Majesco Sales and differentiated itself from other platformers with its emphasis on psychic\u00a0themes. Not only does the story revolve around a summer camp of gifted psychic children, but the playable character, Razputin, has multiple abilities which players can utilize. Raz’s psychic powers through the game include invisibility,\u00a0telekinesis, and levitation.<\/p>\n

6 <\/span>A Hat In Time<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

A Hat in Time\u00a0<\/em>is one of gaming’s many crowd-funding success stories. The game was advertised on Kickstarter, where it smashed its $30,000 goal with an eye-watering\u00a0$296,360 pledged<\/a>. Consequently,\u00a0A Hat In Time\u00a0<\/em>had a huge weight of expectations on its shoulders. Although it didn’t reach the heights of some of the platforming genre’s top titles, it was well-received by both fans and critics, scoring between 74 and 79 on Metacritic across its four releases.<\/p>\n

As for the game itself,\u00a0A Hat In Time\u00a0<\/em>is similar to\u00a0New Super Lucky’s Tale\u00a0<\/em>in the sense that it takes inspiration from classic collectathon titles like\u00a0Banjo-Kazooie<\/a>. <\/em>The game made great use of the money pledged, creating visually impressive and well-designed open levels for players to explore.<\/p>\n

5 <\/span>Ori and the Wills of the Wisps<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

The Metroidvania genre has had a fairly impressive resurgence in recent years, with games like\u00a0Hollow Knight<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0Guacamelee 2!<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>revitalizing the\u00a0playstyle. One other title that has helped recapture the Metroidvania magic is\u00a0Ori and the Will of the Wisps<\/a>,\u00a0<\/em>which is today recognized as being one of Xbox Game Studios’ best releases during the eighth generation of console.<\/p>\n

The game has beautiful, nature-inspired visuals just like its predecessor but expands upon it by implementing open-world elements such as numerous side quests.<\/p>\n

4 <\/span>Spyro Reignited Trilogy<\/h2>\n

Much like the aforementioned\u00a0Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy<\/a>,\u00a0<\/em>2018’s Spyro The Dragon<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>was a well-received remake of the original PlayStation 1 trilogy. The game provided great value for money, as all three games have fantastic collectathon levels that each take a good amount of time to complete 100%<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The release of\u00a0Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About\u00a0<\/em>Time\u00a0<\/em>has unsurprisingly got fans of the purple dragon excited that their beloved franchise will also be receiving a new entry. Although nothing has been confirmed, it does seem as though\u00a0a new\u00a0Spyro\u00a0<\/em>game could be in the works, as\u00a0Crash Bandicoot 4<\/em> has a hidden easter egg that appears to tease\u00a0<\/a>Spyro 4<\/a>.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

3 <\/span>Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Much like\u00a0A Hat In Time,\u00a0<\/em>the\u00a0Yooka-Laylee<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>franchise began life as a highly anticipated crowd-funding project. However,\u00a0Playtonic Games\u00a0Yooka-Laylee\u00a0<\/em>wasn’t as well-received when it initially hit stores, with criticisms of its level-design resulting in Metascores as low as 68 on PlayStation 4<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Many people thought that the poor reception would mark the end of the franchise, though a new game was\u00a0released just a couple of years later.\u00a0Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair\u00a0<\/em>came out\u00a0in October 2019 and was far better received than its predecessor. The game took a change of direction, ditching its\u00a0Banjo-Kazooie\u00a0<\/em>influences in favor of side-scrolling\u00a0Donkey Kong Country<\/a>–<\/em>like platforming.<\/p>\n

2 <\/span>Banjo-Kazooie<\/h2>\n

There’s a reason why\u00a0Banjo-Kazooie<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>has already been mentioned so many times in this list, as\u00a0Rare’s classic platformer is one of the most influential collectathon’s of all time. The game differentiated itself from the majority of platformers at the time of its release, with its comparatively huge levels that were filled to the brim with things to do and collect.<\/p>\n

Despite releasing all the way back in 1998, players don’t need to worry too much about how to play the game today, as it’s available on Microsoft’s Game Pass service.<\/p>\n

1 <\/span>Rayman Legends<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Rayman<\/em><\/a> has always held a fairly odd place in the platforming genre. Despite the limbless hero featuring in some of the most critically acclaimed games<\/a> in the genre’s history, the limbless hero is often forgotten when the best franchises are mentioned, and Ubisoft seem to see Rayman<\/em> as secondary to their action & adventure games. Hopes of Ubisoft returning to their platforming hero in the near future appear to be slim, but thankfully he has numerous excellent titles to keep fans busy.<\/p>\n

Although the first two\u00a0Rayman\u00a0<\/em>games are classics,\u00a0Rayman Legends\u00a0<\/em>is the best pick to play today. The game has some of the most well-designed platforming stages in the genre’s side-scrolling history, with plenty of secrets hidden within.<\/p>\n
