Thankfully, the console&#8217;s tides turned and it&#8217;s now considered one of the greatest handhelds of all time.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"related-single\">RELATED: <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/rarest-3ds-games-value\/\">The 10 Rarest 3DS Games (&amp; How Much They&#8217;re Worth)<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>It makes sense to\u00a0celebrate the best titles from this great handheld, but many 3DS players have likely covered\u00a0the big guns in the console&#8217;s library at this point. Instead, it seemed like a good idea to focus on those great titles that may have flown under the radar. So, with that in mind, these are ten of the greatest overlooked games on the\u00a03DS.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Updated March 20th, 2021 by Stephen LaGioia:\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>With the continuing success of the Switch, the most recent dedicated handheld from the Big N\u00a0has become\u00a0overshadowed by this more technologically-capable hybrid machine. This has been the case despite the variety of newer models,\u00a0including\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/new-nintendo-2ds-xl-review\/\">the New 2DS XL<\/a>,\u00a0helping to bring\u00a0some momentum. Nonetheless, the 3DS continues to bring a unique charm with its glasses-less 3D capability and dual screens, along with a slew of uniquely charming titles. As such, it seemed appropriate to dig up and highlight even more of the various hidden gems on Nintendo&#8217;s handheld.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">15 <\/span>SteamWorld Dig 2<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static2.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/steamworld-dig-2-screen-01-ps4-us-26sep17.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>Building on the sturdy foundation of their 2013 sleeper hit, Image &amp; Form offers even more of the rewarding\u00a0<em>SteamWorld Dig\u00a0<\/em>gameplay to Nintendo&#8217;s handheld, fleshing out the details and offering a more diverse, expansive world.<\/p>\n<p>The experience can be described as a more accessible variant of\u00a0<em>Terraria<\/em> sans the building &#8211; with its blend of platforming, combat, and resource-gathering. The game draws in players with its easy-to-learn mechanics and charming steampunk themes. Yet it keeps them hooked with its rewarding gameplay, along with a unique system of tools and steam-powered upgrades. <em>SteamWorld Dig 2<\/em>&#8216;s\u00a0pick-up-and-play sensibilities and interface prove a great match for the touch-enabled 3DS.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">14 <\/span>Project X Zone<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static0.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/3DS-Project-X-Zone.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>While Monolith Soft is known for crafting one of the most renowned RPG series on Nintendo platforms in\u00a0<em>Xenoblade<\/em>, less-known is this similarly fun tactical RPG from 2012.\u00a0<em>Project X Zone <\/em>draws from a pool of properties from Namco Bandai, Capcom, and Sega &#8211; including\u00a0<em>Phoenix Wright\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0<em>Legend of Valkyrie\u00a0<\/em>&#8211;\u00a0and tosses them into\u00a0a role-playing epic that spans 60 hours. Despite its vast scale,\u00a0<em>Project X Zone\u00a0<\/em>captivates the whole way with its amusing narrative, colorful characters, and fun combat which blends strategy and action.<\/p>\n<p>Much like its Japanese-only predecessor\u00a0from &#8217;05,\u00a0<em>Namco x Capcom<\/em>, this romp serves as a memorable celebration of some of Japan&#8217;s biggest gaming stars.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">13 <\/span>Tales Of The Abyss<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static3.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Tales-Of-The-Abyss-.png' \/><\/figure>\n<p>Though it tends to be overlooked for being a port of a PS2 title, this\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/tales-of\/\">Tales<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>rendition on 3DS remains a fan-favorite, and arguably one of the best RPGs to grace the 3DS. This delightful adventure shines as one of the best hidden gems the handheld has to offer, as well as <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/longest-nintendo-3ds-games\/\">one of the longest<\/a>, clocking in at 50 hours.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">12 <\/span>Heroes of Ruin<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static3.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Heroes-of-Ruin-Gameplay.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>Those who have ever\u00a0played a game in the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/diablo\/\"><em>Diablo<\/em><\/a> series should get the base idea of <em>Heroes of Ruin<\/em>.\u00a0Developed by n-Space and published <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/best-square-enix-games-arent-final-fantasy\/\">by Square Enix<\/a>, this\u00a0isometric action-RPG utilizes a lot of the 3DS&#8217; online capabilities like SpotPass and Street Pass,\u00a0which allowed\u00a0players to trade items and complete daily challenges.<\/p>\n<p>Taking place in a magical kingdom where a city&#8217;s guardian has been cursed, players can customize their character and set out for some classic dungeon crawling either solo or with friends online. While\u00a0<em>Heroes of Ruin<\/em> will never reach the heights of other Square Enix classics or the games it&#8217;s been inspired by, it&#8217;s a decent enough title to jump into and a solid entry on the 3DS.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">11 <\/span>Ghost Recon: Shadow Wars<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static3.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Ghost-Recon-Shadow-Wars.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>It&#8217;s understandable\u00a0that most gamers tend\u00a0to have forgotten about a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/ghost-recon\/\"><em>Ghost Recon<\/em><\/a> game on the 3DS &#8211; if they knew it was there in the first place. But, that doesn&#8217;t mean Ubisoft&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/gears-tactics-similar-games\/\">turn-based tactical title<\/a> should be overlooked. Taking notes from\u00a0franchises like\u00a0<em>Fire Emblem<\/em>, the\u00a0<em>Wars<\/em> series, and even\u00a0<em>Final Fantasy Tactics<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Ghost Recon: Shadow Wars<\/em> won&#8217;t surprise in terms of basic gameplay, yet, the addition of cover mechanics makes the franchise feel fresh.<\/p>\n<p>With multiple modes to play and a story that takes around 35 hours to complete, there&#8217;s a lot to enjoy here. Somehow, despite all this, the game seems to have been overlooked.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">10 <\/span>Code Name: S.T.E.A.M<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static3.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Codename-STEAM-art.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>In many ways,\u00a0<em>Code Name: S.T.E.A.M<\/em> feels like Nintendo&#8217;s answer to Sega&#8217;s <em>Valkyria Chronicles<\/em>\u00a0series, but weirder.\u00a0Named\u00a0<em>Lincoln vs Aliens<\/em> in Japan, this\u00a0title developed by Intelligent Systems mixes turn-based tactical gameplay with third-person action, as Abraham Lincoln takes on hordes of aliens in a steampunk-inspired adventure.<\/p>\n<p>The game is equal parts bizarre and well designed, being a truly perfect fit on the 3DS. Yet, for some reason, it seems like it&#8217;s been ignored. Maybe it&#8217;s because of its deep, more complex mechanics, or maybe there just isn&#8217;t enough love for steampunk Abe Lincoln, but it&#8217;s still a fantastic game.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">9 <\/span>Ever Oasis<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static0.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Ever-Oasis-Art.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>Inspired by the legendary\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/collection-of-mana\/\">Mana<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>series, Grezzo&#8217;s action-RPG\u00a0blends town-management with classic adventure gameplay in a seamless way. With an overarching story of restoring a town, players must bring in new residents, help them out, and reap the rewards. There is a real, tangible, visual development to see as a player&#8217;s town moves from little sand dunes to a lush city full of life.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">8 <\/span>Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor Overclocked<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static2.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Shin-Megami-Tensei-Devil-Survivor-Overclocked-art.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thegamer.com\/atlus-best-games\/\"  rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Shin Megami Tensei<\/em><\/a> is one of the best RPG franchises around, and many of the series&#8217; best titles have a home on the 3DS. Now, the most popular may be\u00a0<em>Shin Megami Tensei IV<\/em> and its sequel, but\u00a0<em>Devil Survivor Overclocked\u00a0<\/em>is just as good.<\/p>\n<p>As a remake of a fantastic 3DS title,\u00a0<em>Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor Overclocked\u00a0<\/em>takes the gameplay and plot \u2014 which sees modern-day Tokyo under attack by digital demons only our protagonist can stop, capture and fuse \u2014 and extends it, updates the visuals, and provides more goodies from the original 2009 release.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">7 <\/span>Theatrhythm: Final Fantasy<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static1.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Theatrhythm-Final-Fantasy-3ds.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/final-fantasy\/\"><em>Final Fantasy<\/em><\/a> is one of the longest-standing franchises in video game history, and its soundtrack is iconic. So, it&#8217;s no surprise that Square-Enix tasked developer Indieszero with creating a title that celebrates\u00a0a\u00a0beloved part of the storied series.<\/p>\n<p>Allowing players to develop a party of four consisting of characters from the first 13 games in the series, they will take on massive boss battles and play through entire stages all to the beats of some of the most iconic music in gaming. It&#8217;s a celebration of\u00a0<em>Final Fantasy<\/em>, and fans of the series need to play it.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">6 <\/span>Shinobi 3D<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static2.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Shinobi-3D.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>At one point, before <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/sonic-hedgehog-super-sonic-facts-trivia\/\">Sonic The Hedgehog<\/a>, <em>Shinobi&#8217;s\u00a0<\/em>Joe Musashi was Sega&#8217;s unofficial mascot. The 2D-ninja platforming series may not have been the most popular franchise in the world, but there were some truly great games that are beloved to this day. Sega brought the franchise back on the 3DS with a fantastic side-scrolling adventure.<\/p>\n<p>Putting players in the shoes of Joe&#8217;s father, Jiro, who is transported 800 years into the future and even into outer space. While this game does retcon the long-time protagonist in the series&#8217; existence, it&#8217;s a fantastic arcade-centric title on a system that doesn&#8217;t have a lot of games like this in its library.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">5 <\/span>HarmoKnight<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static2.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Harmoknight-Art.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>Game Freak may be known for their insanely popular\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/games-play-like-pokemon\/\"><em>Pok\u00e9mon<\/em> games<\/a> \u2014 heck, the 3DS has two sets of games \u2014 but every once in a while they produce something outside of that universe, and it&#8217;s usually really good. Case and point,\u00a0<em>HarmoKnight<\/em>. Blending rhythm and platforming, players run through 2D levels collecting musical notes, building their own soundtrack in the process.<\/p>\n<p>Taking control of Tempo, players must run through automatically scrolling levels collecting music notes along the way.\u00a0Yet, mistiming a jump can lead to a slight miscue, meaning the game&#8217;s soundtrack may be off by a half-second. This kind of design calls for incredible accuracy, but it&#8217;s easy to get back on track.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">4 <\/span>Nano Assault<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static3.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/3DS-Nano-Assault.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>This thrilling shoot &#8217;em up from Shin&#8217;en Multimedia gives players a taste of arcade-style gaming that feels delightfully retro despite its 2011 release. Like its predecessor on the DS known as\u00a0<em>Nanostray<\/em>, this one struggled to stand out amidst a strong, expansive lineup of action titles. But aside from its short length, this can stand with the best of them, with its impressive visuals, solid mechanics, and some fun, intense shooter gameplay.<\/p>\n<p>In a premise that feels very &#8220;2020,&#8221; the goal is to take out microscopic viruses which threaten to put a damper on things. Players will soar and shoot their way through over 30 celestial stages, along with plague-ridden micro planets ala\u00a0<em>Super Mario Galaxy<\/em>.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">3 <\/span>Kid Icarus: Uprising<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static1.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/Kid-Icarus-Uprising-Cover-Art.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>It not often that a Nintendo-branded property gets overlooked, but that is largely the case with this atmospheric shooter &#8211; just as it has been for the\u00a0<em>Kid Icarus\u00a0<\/em>series in general. Though this character <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/god-war-ragnarok-gods-greek-mythology-need-return\/\">inspired by Greek mythology<\/a> is most known for his outings on\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/super-smash-bros-ultimate-fighters-people-want-dont\/\"><em>Super Smash Bros.<\/em><\/a>, he also stars in perhaps one of 3DS&#8217; best exclusive titles.<\/p>\n<p>After a wait of over two decades for his own game, the hero Pit is finally able to spread his wings and soar on this exhilarating third-person shooter. Those who favor arcade-style action, particularly flight-heavy romps\u00a0like\u00a0<em>Bayonetta<\/em>, should look no further than this hidden gem from Nintendo and Project Sora.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">2 <\/span>Rune Factory 4<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static0.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Rune-Factory-4-Art.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>For a long time, gamers always wondered how\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/harvest-moon\/\"><em>Harvest Moon<\/em><\/a> would play if dungeon crawling elements were added to the game. Well,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/rune-factory\/\"><em>Rune Factory<\/em><\/a> answered that question, and the fourth entry in the series may have been its best.<\/p>\n<p>With a three arc plot that sees our protagonist waking up in a small town, players must farm, craft, and dungeon crawl their way through the story, all while building relationships in the process. That last point is a major mechanic of the game, and there are events scattered throughout the plot to help strengthen these relationships. Not all are romantic either, which makes the game feel a little more honest.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">1 <\/span>Corpse Party<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static1.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Corpse-Party-3DS.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p><em>Corpse Party<\/em> is one of those games that, to certain players, is very important, yet it never reached mainstream success. That&#8217;s not to say it hasn&#8217;t been successful, in fact, the game gets ported to newer consoles every few years, and for good reason too. As a <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/best-survival-horror-games-ranked-according-metacritic\/\">survival horror title<\/a>,\u00a0<em>Corpse Party<\/em> puts players in the shoes of a group of friends who, after unknowingly performing an occultist ritual, are teleported to a demonic school full of monsters who want nothing more than to inflict pain.<\/p>\n<p>The game is very heavy on the narrative aspects of storytelling while featuring no combat.
