Therefore, numerous games were released in the years that followed\u00a0<em>DOOM\u00a0<\/em>that<em>\u00a0<\/em>all had very similar gameplay and became known simply as &#8220;<em>DOOM <\/em>clones.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">10 <\/span>Star Wars: Dark Forces<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static1.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/Star-Wars-Dark-Forces-Lucas-Arts.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>Considering the enormous amount of\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/star-wars\/\">Star Wars<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>video\u00a0games that have been released over the last few decades, it makes sense that at least one of them would try to capitalize on the\u00a0<em>DOOM-<\/em>hype.\u00a0<em>Star Wars: Dark Forces<\/em> was released just over one year after\u00a0<em>DOOM<\/em>\u00a0and did a fantastic job of recreating id Software&#8217;s FPS formula\u00a0within the <em>Star Wars<\/em>\u00a0universe.<\/p>\n<p>It may surprise younger gamers that back in the 90s, <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/best-90s-lucasarts-games-ranked\/\">LucasArts<\/a> wasn&#8217;t predominantly known to the gaming industry for their licensed\u00a0<em>Star Wars\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/indiana-jones-best-games-ranked\/\"><em>Indiana Jones\u00a0<\/em>games<\/a>. The company was acclaimed for its numerous <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/games-like-grim-fandango-suggestions\/\">excellent graphic adventure titles<\/a>, such as\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/Grim%20Fandango\/\">Grim Fandango<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/Day%20of%20the%20Tentacle\/\">Day of the Tentacle<\/a>,\u00a0<\/em>and the\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/Monkey%20Island\/\">Monkey Island<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>series.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">9 <\/span>Disruptor<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static1.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/Disruptor-PlayStation-insoniac-game.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p><em>Disruptor\u00a0<\/em>is best known today for being the first\u00a0title ever developed by\u00a0Insomniac Games.\u00a0US-based developer Insomniac Games has created some of the most beloved family-friendly\u00a0games of all time, such as the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/Ratchet%20and%20Clank\/\"><em>Ratchet and Clank<\/em><\/a>\u00a0franchise and original <em><a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/Spyro%20the%20Dragon\/\">Spyro the Dragon<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>trilogy,<em>\u00a0<\/em>as well as\u00a0the last two\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/Spider-Man\/\">Spider-Man<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>games.<\/p>\n<p>A\u00a0<em>DOOM-<\/em>clone may sound like it&#8217;s out of the comfort zone of a developer known for its <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/underrated-90s-3d-platformers-everyone-forgot\/\">platforming and wholesome adventures<\/a>, though\u00a0<em>Disruptor\u00a0<\/em>is one of the unofficial genre&#8217;s best.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">8 <\/span>Alien Trilogy<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static2.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/AlienPredator-Alien-Trilogy.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/Alien\/\">Alien Trilogy<\/a>,\u00a0<\/em>much like the aforementioned\u00a0<em>Star Wars: Dark Forces,\u00a0<\/em>tried to differentiate itself from the many other\u00a0<em>DOOM-<\/em>clones being released around the\u00a0mid-90s by implementing the gameplay into the world of a well-known\u00a0film franchise. The game was developed by the aptly named Probe Entertainment, which became known as\u00a0Acclaim Entertainment before they went bankrupt in 2004.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"related-single\">RELATED:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/doom-games-things-no-sense\/\">10 Things That Make No Sense About The Doom Franchise<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><em>Alien Trilogy<\/em>&#8216;s graphics and visuals\u00a0struggled to impress, which was\u00a0a significant issue for a <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/forgotten-video-game-genres\/\">movie-licensed game<\/a>. However, the game nailed almost every other design area, particularly with the immersive sound effects.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">7 <\/span>Rise of the Triad: Dark War<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static0.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/rise-of-the-triad-remastered-announced.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/Rise%20of%20the%20Triad\/\">Rise of the Triad: Dark War<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>was released almost exactly one year after\u00a0<em>DOOM\u00a0<\/em>by\u00a0Apogee Software, which is today known as\u00a03D Realms. The game put an interesting spin on the\u00a0<em>DOOM\u00a0<\/em>formula by giving players a selection of characters to choose from, each with\u00a0their own strengths and weaknesses.<\/p>\n<p><em>Rise of the Triad\u00a0<\/em>is set to receive some mainstream attention this year, over 25 years after it was initially released, as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/classic-90s-fps-rise-of-the-triad-is-getting-a-remaster-next-year\/\">it was announced in 2020<\/a> that the game would be getting a remaster on Xbox One, PC, Nintendo Switch, and PlayStation 4.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">6 <\/span>Strife<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static3.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/Strife.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p><em>Strife\u00a0<\/em>was initially released in 1996 by Velocity Inc. The game was developed by Rogue Entertainment, who\u00a0tried to improve upon the\u00a0<em>DOOM\u00a0<\/em>formula in a multitude of ways. Most notably, Rogue Entertainment implemented numerous role-playing elements into\u00a0<em>Strife<\/em>, such as improvable\u00a0abilities and NPCs in the game-world who\u00a0players can interact with.<\/p>\n<p>The Veteran Edition of\u00a0<em>Strife\u00a0<\/em>was recently released on the Nintendo Switch, giving a new audience of gamers the chance to try out the FPS-RPG hybrid.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">5 <\/span>Heretic<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static3.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/Heretic.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p><em>Heretic<\/em>\u00a0didn&#8217;t try to hide its influences\u00a0from\u00a0<em>DOOM;\u00a0<\/em>as large, bold writing on the game&#8217;s front cover read &#8220;From the Publisher of DOOM,&#8221; letting audiences know that <em>Heretic<\/em> would\u00a0offer a similar experience.\u00a0The game was developed by Raven Software and marked the beginning of the &#8220;Serpent Riders&#8221; trilogy.<\/p>\n<p><em>Heretic\u00a0<\/em>is one of the most well-known entries on this list;\u00a0this is not only because of the game&#8217;s quality but also because it was available to so many people. It was released on Microsoft Windows,\u00a0MS-DOS, Mac,\u00a0PlayStation 1,\u00a0Sega Saturn, and <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/nintendo-64-games-need-remake\/\">the Nintendo 64<\/a> in that order between 1995 and 1997.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">4 <\/span>Blood<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static3.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/blood.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>The aptly named\u00a0<em>Blood\u00a0<\/em>was initially released in 1997 by\u00a0GT Interactive Software, which was rebranded as Infogrames before changing names again to Atari, Inc. The game was developed by\u00a0Monolith Productions, which is best known today for developing\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/Middle-earth:%20Shadow%20of%20Mordor\/\"><em>Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor<\/em><\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/Middle-earth:%20Shadow%20of%20War\/\"><em>Middle-earth: Shadow of War<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In May 2019,\u00a0<em>Blood\u00a0<\/em>received a remaster entitled\u00a0<em>Blood: Fresh Supply.\u00a0<\/em>The remaster was made by\u00a0Nightdive Studios and is currently available on Steam among other platforms.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">3 <\/span>Hexen: Beyond Heretic<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static1.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/hexen-beyond-heretic-1.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>The second entry into the aforementioned\u00a0&#8220;Serpent Riders&#8221; trilogy,\u00a0<em>Hexen: Beyond Heretic\u00a0<\/em>differentiated itself from other\u00a0<em>DOOM\u00a0<\/em>clones in a handful of ways. For starters, the game took a leaf out of\u00a0<em>Rise of the Triad: Dark War&#8217;<\/em>s book by giving players a selection of characters to choose from, each with\u00a0differing abilities. Moreover, the game&#8217;s levels were very open for the time, making the game feel less claustrophobic than\u00a0<em>DOOM.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"related-single\">RELATED:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/id-software-best-games-metacritic\/\">id Software&#8217;s 12 Best Games (According To Metacritic)<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Although they may not seem like much today,<em> Hexen: Beyond Heretic<\/em>&#8216;s visuals were fantastic for the time and, along with <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/linear-game-franchises-turned-open-world\/\">the non-linear level design<\/a>, helped make the game feel like a true evolution of the original\u00a0<em>DOOM.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">2 <\/span>Marathon 2: Durandal<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static3.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/marathon-2.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>It&#8217;s fair to say that the team behind <em>Marathon 2: Durandal\u00a0<\/em>knows a thing or two about creating excellent first-person shooters, as the game was developed and published by Bungie.\u00a0US-based developer Bungie\u00a0created the original\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/Halo\/\">Halo<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>trilogy,\u00a0<em>Halo 3: ODST\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0<em>Halo: Reach,\u00a0<\/em>before creating the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/Destiny\/\"><em>Destiny<\/em><\/a><em>\u00a0<\/em>franchise. The\u00a0<em>Marathon\u00a0<\/em>trilogy has many similarities to\u00a0<em>Halo,\u00a0<\/em>leading to the franchise being considered a spiritual successor.<\/p>\n<p><em>Marathon 2: Durandal\u00a0<\/em>was initially released on\u00a0Mac in 1995 before coming to\u00a0PC the following year. The game was later released on the Xbox 360&#8217;s Xbox Live Arcade in August 2007, presumably to capitalize on the hype for\u00a0<em>Halo 3,\u00a0<\/em>which\u00a0hit stores just over a month later.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">1 <\/span>Duke Nukem 3D<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static3.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/Duke-Nukem-3D.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>The\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/Duke%20Nukem\/\">Duke Nukem<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>franchise was initially\u00a0released in 1991 with\u00a0<em>Duke Nukem,\u00a0<\/em>a 2D platformer. The side-scrolling gameplay was repeated in the game&#8217;s 1993 sequel before\u00a0<em>Duke Nukem 3D\u00a0<\/em>gave the franchise the\u00a0<em>DOOM-<\/em>clone treatment in 1996. All three games were developed by the aforementioned 3D Realms, previously known as\u00a0Apogee Software.<\/p>\n<p>Although <em>Duke Nukem 3D<\/em>&#8216;s similarities to\u00a0<em>DOOM\u00a0<\/em>are clear to see, 3D Realms clearly tried hard to make the game feel different from id Software&#8217;s classic.
