Resident Evil 3<\/em> is the latest entry in the Resident Evil<\/em> franchise, before\u00a0Resident Evil Village<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0arrives later this summer. Although Resident Evil 3<\/em> is the reimagining of 1999’s Resident Evil 3: Nemesis<\/em>, it is technically a new entry in the franchise with all the story and gameplay overhauls. For many, 2020’s Resident Evil 3<\/em> is the first time they\u00a0encountered the relentless Nemesis and discovered a different side of the Raccoon City incident.<\/p>\n

Fans of Resident Evil 3<\/em> might find the upcoming Resident Evil Village<\/em><\/a>\u00a0a bit different, as it builds upon the foundation laid by 2017’s Resident Evil 7<\/em> rather than Resident Evil 3<\/em>. While both games are built upon the same RE Engine, newcomers that are\u00a0moving on from Resident Evil 3<\/em> to Resident Evil Village<\/em>\u00a0should keep a few things in mind.<\/p>\n

Unlike Resident Evil 3<\/em>, Resident Evil Village<\/em>\u00a0plays from a first-person perspective. Resident Evil Village<\/em>\u00a0follows in the footsteps of Resident Evil 7<\/em><\/a>\u00a0 as a more grounded survival horror experience. Whereas Jill is a fierce soldier having years of combat training, Ethan is a mere civilian just finding ways to survive. This shift in perspective with Ethan returning in Resident Evil Village<\/em>\u00a0<\/em>means that players will be stepping in Ethan’s shoes to face the\u00a0terror upfront.<\/p>\n

2020’s Resident Evil 3<\/em> allowed players to dodge their enemies when timed correctly. This led to a more aggressive combat style where players could get up close to enemies such as Nemesis and still have a window to make a clean exit. This risk and reward system led to some enthralling moments that made Resident Evil 3<\/em> a more action-driven horror game<\/a>.<\/p>\n

In Resident Evil Village<\/em>, players won’t be able to dodge an enemy’s attack, which will lead to a sense of vulnerability during crowded encounters. However, players will be able to defend themselves by guarding, a first for the series. Additionally, players can also push away enemies to clear some ground. Capcom has not confirmed whether guarding and pushing is limited to certain enemies or could be performed during boss battles as well. Though, it would be interesting to see how it affects these encounters.<\/p>\n

The 2020\u00a0remake of Resident Evil 3<\/em> made a lot of changes from the original Resident Evil 3<\/em><\/a>. There were many narrative beats, enemy encounters, and alternative endings removed from the game that led to a 5-6 hours long campaign in contrast to the original’s 7-8 hours one. By modern standards, Resident Evil 3<\/em> is a fairly short experience that could be summed up in a single sitting.<\/p>\n

However, Capcom is taking a different approach for Resident Evil Village<\/em>. Unlike prior entries in the series, Resident Evil Village<\/em>\u00a0features a semi-open<\/a> world that players will get to explore. While an exact number has not been confirmed, Resident Evil Village<\/em>\u00a0is rumored to be the longest RE Engine game to date. Players disappointed with the short length of Resident Evil 3’s<\/em> campaign\u00a0will get plenty of hours to sink into Resident Evil Village<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Resident Evil Village<\/em> is also a tonal shift for the series. The evil that lurks in its snow surrounded village and victorian castle grounds are vampires and werewolves<\/a> instead of the mutated T-Virus zombies. Overall, Resident Evil Village<\/em>\u00a0is shaping up to be an ambitious sequel that looks to be adding to the series’ frantic survival horror roots rejuvenated in Resident Evil 7<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Resident Evil Village<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0releases on May 7, 2021, for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X\/S.<\/p>\n
