Although there are enough video games out there to last more than one lifetime, it can still be heartbreaking when an excellent-sounding upcoming game is canceled<\/a>. Sadly,\u00a0Silent Hills<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>joined the long list of highly anticipated titles that are unlikely ever to release, following the public breakup between\u00a0Kojima Productions and Konami<\/a>.\u00a0Silent Hills\u00a0<\/em>is a gutting cancellation in particular, as the game’s playable teaser,\u00a0P.T.,\u00a0<\/em>was extremely well received.<\/p>\n

Thankfully, there are numerous fantastic horror<\/a> games\u00a0available,\u00a0many of which are made by indie studios, that can scratch players’ itch for frightening adventures. Some of the indie games<\/a> on this list are vastly different in playstyle than\u00a0P.T.,\u00a0<\/em>but they all provide thoroughly enjoyable horror experiences<\/a> that will hopefully fill the void left by\u00a0Silent Hills<\/em>‘ cancellation.<\/p>\n

10 <\/span>The Medium<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

The Medium<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>is one of the few games that has been released on Xbox Series X<\/a>, but not on Xbox One. This\u00a0is due to the game’s dual\u00a0world feature, which the Xbox One simply isn’t powerful enough to run smoothly.\u00a0Bloober Team’s The Medium\u00a0<\/em>is set in\u00a0post-Communism Poland and puts players in the shoes of a medium named\u00a0Marianne.\u00a0After getting a mysterious phone call, Marianne travels to a resort named Niwa, where she uncovers its tragic history.<\/p>\n

The psychological horror game is very linear and story-driven, with the gameplay predominantly consisting of puzzle-solving.<\/p>\n

9 <\/span>The Forest<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Playing\u00a0The Forest<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>is similar to watching a 60s horror film, in the sense that it can be scary alone but hilarious with friends. Although\u00a0The Forest\u00a0<\/em>does have a narrative centered around the protagonist losing their son in a plane crash, its popularity was predominantly due to\u00a0the excellent multiplayer.<\/p>\n

Endnight Games’ survival horror\u00a0title was well received by critics, with the PC iteration\u00a0receiving an\u00a083 Metascore on PC. The game’s success has unsurprisingly meant that a sequel is in development;\u00a0Sons of the Forest\u00a0<\/em>is\u00a0expected to\u00a0release within the next couple of years.<\/p>\n

8 <\/span>Five Nights at Freddy’s<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Surprise hit\u00a0Five Nights At Freddy’s<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>was initially released in 2014 on PC before coming to iOS,\u00a0Android, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PlayStation 4 in the years that followed. The game was developed by\u00a0Scott Cawthon, who has also worked on\u00a0its many sequels.<\/p>\n

Five Nights at Freddy’s\u00a0<\/em>is certainly not the most complicated game in the world, though its simplicity makes it all the more engaging. The game puts players in control of a security\u00a0guard at a Chuck E Cheese-inspired restaurant, who needs to fend off a group of deadly Animatronics who sporadically start approaching.<\/p>\n

7 <\/span>Soma<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

When judging\u00a0Soma<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>purely on its gameplay, it’s certainly not a bad game, but it doesn’t stand out from the large crowd of average horror games that have been released over the last few decades. However,\u00a0Soma\u00a0<\/em>became one of 2015’s most interesting and talked about horror games thanks to its fascinating, haunting, and well-crafted story<\/a>.<\/p>\n

It’s difficult to discuss the story without running into spoiler territory, though it can be said that fans of the tv series\u00a0Black <\/em><\/a>Mirror<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>should certainly consider giving the game a try, as they have similar themes of the danger of technological advancements.<\/p>\n

6 <\/span>Subnautica<\/h2>\n

When coming across\u00a0Subnautica<\/em><\/a>‘s box in a store or perhaps flicking past it on Game Pass<\/a>, most people would likely believe the game to be a relaxing, meditative venture into an alien planet’s sea. However, it soon becomes clear that this isn’t the case when booting up\u00a0the game, as players will\u00a0find themselves stranded in the middle of the ocean and having to delve into the deep blue sea to scavenge materials while evading the deadly creatures that lie below.<\/p>\n

Subnautica\u00a0<\/em>was extremely well-received by the gaming community, and it was awarded the accolade of\u00a0Fan Favorite Indie Game at the\u00a0Gamers’ Choice Awards<\/a> in 2018.<\/p>\n

5 <\/span>Darkwood<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Darkwood<\/em>\u00a0was initially released on Mac and PC in 2017, before coming to Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PlayStation 4 nearly two years later. The game\u00a0features a top-down perspective which is uncommon for the horror genre, as the perspective is inherently less immersive than first or third person. However, the game’s development team,\u00a0Acid Wizard Studio, did a fantastic job creating an\u00a0atmospheric and truly unsettling\u00a0experience.<\/p>\n

Darkwood<\/em>\u00a0is also notable for its semi-open world, which has a well-integrated day\/night cycle.<\/p>\n

4 <\/span>Outlast<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Outlast<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>is\u00a0a rare case of an indie game that is known to many people who aren’t particularly interested in gaming. This is because the survival horror game has been played by many influencers of YouTube and Twitch, thanks to the game’s easy-to-learn controls and numerous jumpscares that make for great viewing.<\/p>\n

Outlast\u00a0<\/em>takes a leaf out of\u00a0Amnesia<\/em><\/a>‘s book by giving players no weaponry, forcing them to hide and stealth past enemies if they want to survive. The game is notable for its level design, which is well-crafted to give players numerous places to hide without making them ever feel too safe.<\/p>\n

3 <\/span>Cry of Fear<\/h2>\n

Cry of Fear<\/em> was released by Team Psykskallar in 2012. The game was initially a mod for Half-Life<\/em><\/a>\u00a0but released as a standalone product shortly after.<\/p>\n

Similar to\u00a0Outlast,\u00a0<\/em>Cry of Fear\u00a0<\/em>is well-known by the YouTube community thanks to influencer reactions to the game. Unlike\u00a0Outlast,\u00a0<\/em>which most people watch others play an entire walkthrough of, many people only watch the reactions of one specific part of\u00a0Cry of Fear.\u00a0<\/em>This is because the game has one of the most infamous jumpscares in gaming history. Not only does it feel as though\u00a0“the face” is\u00a0jumping out of the screen, but it’s also terrifying because it comes completely out of nowhere.<\/p>\n

2 <\/span>Observer: System Redux<\/h2>\n

Observer: System Redux<\/em><\/a> is the second game on this list that was developed by Bloober Team. System Redux\u00a0<\/em>is an enhanced re-release of Observer<\/em>, featuring new story content and improved visuals to the game’s cyberpunk world.<\/p>\n

The cyberpunk world<\/a> is one of Observer: System Redux<\/em>‘s many fantastic features, exemplified by it winning the Best Setting accolade from Game Informer<\/a> in 2017. The game also received solid reviews from critics, especially the Xbox One iteration, which has an impressive Metascore of 86.<\/p>\n

1 <\/span>Amnesia: The Dark Descent<\/h2>\n

Frictional Games’ Amnesia: The Dark Descent\u00a0<\/em>is today recognized as being one of the best and most influential horror games of all time. The horror genre was in a bit of an odd place around 2010, as many of the games released that year or the year prior had predominantly been action-centric with horror themes;\u00a0Resident Evil 5\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0Dead Rising 2\u00a0<\/em>being two prominent examples.<\/p>\n

Amnesia: The Dark Descent\u00a0<\/em>went against this trend, providing a pure horror experience with one of the most unsettling atmospheres in the genre’s history.<\/p>\n
