\tEtisalat Group and Rakuten Mobile agreed to jointly develop a design for a novel generation of mobile networks based on open standards, a move they tipped would help the operator introduce cost-effective services for its customers.<\/p>\n

In a statement, Rakuten said the pair signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to build a reference blueprint for mobile broadband networks and open RAN technology based on the Rakuten Communications Platform [1] (RCP).<\/p>\n

Under the agreement, Etisalat\u2019s newly-designed networks in the Middle East, Africa and Asia will use Rakuten\u2019s \u201ccloud-native, software-centric and fully virtualised\/containerised platform\u201d to provide intelligent and secure operations, the company claimed.<\/p>\n

Rakuten Mobile CTO Tareq Amin explained the \u201cnew generation of telecom infrastructure\u201d based on its platform will bring cost-effective mobile services for Etisalat\u2019s customers.<\/p>\n

Hatem Bamatraf, CTO of Etisalat International, described the agreement as an \u201cunique opportunity\u201d for the companies to \u201cco-explore and further develop next-generation mobile networks\u201d.<\/p>\n

He added the tie-up will allow Etisalat to \u201cleverage a cost-effective, cloud-native, open RAN-based mobile network architecture that is secure, scalable and reliable\u201d.<\/p>\n

Rakuten made a push [2] to boost its global presence in mid-2020 when it established an international headquarters in Singapore.<\/p>\n
