Octopath Traveler<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>is an RPG video game developed by Square Enix and released on the Nintendo Switch in July 2018, PC in June 2019, and Google Stadia in April 2020. It is also releasing on Xbox One in March 2021. The game takes place in the land of Orsterra and follows the journies of eight adventurers, all with different backgrounds and characteristics.<\/p>\n

Besides the usual JRPG strategies such as saving whenever possible and keeping the party in tip-top shape, the player should keep more tactics in mind and utilize further methods when it comes to\u00a0the game. In fact, unlike many other JRPGs,\u00a0Octopath Traveler\u00a0<\/em>is not exactly “simple.” The player cannot just mash the same button every turn in combat and breeze through the overworld without paying some attention.<\/p>\n

8 <\/span>Choose The Best Starting Character<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

There are eight characters to choose from in the game and the player needs to make a decision right out the gate. While there is no wrong choice or right one, some characters are just easier to start with than others according to their playstyle. But eventually, the player meets them all.<\/p>\n

Olberic is a classic Warrior; hit monster, gain experience. Cyrus is a powerful Scholar; use magic, explode enemies. Tressa is a regular Merchant; restore HP and SP (and Status Ailments), get money. Ophilia is a typical Cleric; heal people, cast holy spells. Primrose is a classy Dancer; buff others, recruit NPCs. Alfyn is a smart Apothecary; find ingredients, make potions. Therion is a clever Thief; steal items, stab opponents. H’aanit is a strong Hunter; tame beasts, shoot foes in the face.<\/p>\n

7 <\/span>Use Those Path Actions<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

In the game, every character has a unique skill<\/a> in the overworld called a Path Action. Some are considered “Noble”\u00a0\u2014 skilled but no penalty,\u00a0and others “Rogue” \u2014 novice but penalty if failed. For the most part, they can (and should) be spammed.<\/p>\n

Olberic can Challenge (Noble),\u00a0dueling certain NPCs. Cyrus can Scrutinize (Rogue), interrogating NPCs for information. Tressa can Purchase (Noble), buying items from NPCs. Ophilia can Guide (Noble), escorting NPCs. Primrose can Allure (Rogue), charming NPCs. Alfyn can Inquire (Noble), chatting with NPCs for information. Therion can Steal (Rogue), pilfering items from NPCs. H’aanit can Provoke (Rogue), unleashing beasts on NPCs to trigger combat.<\/p>\n

6 <\/span>Do Not Forget To Fast Travel<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

The land of Orsterra is huge and sprawling<\/a>. It will take the player an unnecessarily long amount of time to just walk back and forth everywhere. Fortunately, fast travel exists.<\/p>\n

To fast travel, they can open up the menu and\u00a0select any town on the world map that the player has been to already\u00a0to teleport there. Only (the entrance to) towns, though. They cannot warp to dungeons or random points in other areas.<\/p>\n

5 <\/span>Break Enemies Down<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

In the game, each enemy has a certain amount of\u00a0Shield Points\u00a0and at least one Vulnerability.\u00a0If the player exploits one of their Vulnerabilities, they will destroy one of their Shields. When the enemy loses all its Shields, their current turn ends<\/a> and their next one is canceled.<\/p>\n

This status is called “Break.” Enemies will take additional 50 percent damage and become Weak to incoming attacks. On the first turn they recover, they act immediately (no matter how fast anyone else is on the battlefield). So, the player must take advantage and time their strikes.<\/p>\n

4 <\/span>Stock Up Them Boosts<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Every turn the character acts, they will earn a Boost Point. Up to five Boost Points may be stocked at once. are stocked every turn; and, up to three Boost Points may be used at once. If the character consumes a Boost Point, they enter Boost Mode<\/a>.<\/p>\n

In Boost Mode, attacks are multiplied per each Boost Point consumed (doubled, tripled, or quadrupled). Also, buffs and debuffs last longer (two more turns), and some skills become more efficient such as targeting more enemies. However, no Boost Points are stocked on the turn Boost Mode is used.<\/p>\n

3 <\/span>Do Not Be Afraid To\u00a0Switch Characters<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

The\u00a0player may get attached and use the same four characters<\/a> in their party throughout the entire game. This is not viable. All eight characters should be ready for combat but generally, it is okay to mix and match since they all have certain strengths and weaknesses (and therefore synchronizations).<\/p>\n

Basically, four of the characters are physical (Olberic, Alfyn, Therion, H’aanit) and the other four are elemental (Cyrus, Tressa, Ophilia, Primrose).\u00a0If the player is lacking physical strength, swap in one of the former choices; vise versa (elemental power) for the latter. Also, generally, they need only to worry about filling the key roles of a healer, a tank, and a damage dealer. The fourth slot is typically up to the player, depending on their preference.<\/p>\n

2 <\/span>Leave No Dungeon Unexplored<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

There are dungeons in the game<\/a> and lots of them. Some are mandatory, others optional. But all of them have loot. Plus, the player will likely have to grind eventually so they might as well do so in an environment where they are encountering new monsters and finding valuable treasure.<\/p>\n

The optional dungeons in question are Carrion Caves, Derelict Mine, Everhold Tunnels,\u00a0Loch of the Lost King,\u00a0Marsalim Catacombs,\u00a0Maw of the Ice Dragon,\u00a0Path of Beasts,\u00a0Refuge Ruins,\u00a0The Hollow Throne,\u00a0The Whistlewood,\u00a0Tomb of the Imperator, Twin Falls,\u00a0Untouched Sanctum, and Whistling Cavern.<\/p>\n

1 <\/span>Find All The Shrines<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Throughout the world of Orsterra, there are 12 Shrines scattered about. Each is dedicated to a god<\/a>; but more importantly, each unlocks a secondary job (eight). There are also advanced jobs (four) that require the player to defeat the god.<\/p>\n

After Chapter 1, they will begin to stumble upon the Starting Job Shrines. They are located somewhere in the areas where Chapters 2 and 3 take place. When discovered, a secondary job will be unlocked; this means a character can take on a sub-job and ultimately become better.<\/p>\n

In the Western Stillsnow Wilds, there is the Shrine of the Flamebearer that unlocks Cleric. In the\u00a0Western Noblecourt Flats, there is the\u00a0Shrine of the Sage that unlocks\u00a0Scholar.\u00a0In Moonstruck Coast, there is the Shrine of the Trader that unlocks Merchant. In North Stonegard Pass, there is the Shrine of the Thunderblade that unlocks Warrior. In the Northern Wellspring Sands, there is the Shrine of the Lady of Grace that unlocks Dancer. In East Saintsbridge Traverse, there is the Shrine of the Healer that unlocks Apothecary. In South Quarrycrest Pass, there is the Shrine of the Prince of Thieves that unlocks Thief. In East Victors Hollow Trail, there is the Shrine of the Huntress that unlocks Hunter.<\/p>\n

In the late game, the player can find Advanced Job Shrines. In the Western Wispermill Flats, there is the Shrine of the Starseer where they must defeat Steorra to unlock Starseer. In West Everhold Pass, there is the Shrine of the Runeblade where the player must defeat Balogar to unlock Runelord. In North Riverford Traverse, there is the Shrine of the Warbringer where they must defeat Winnehild to unlock Warmaster. In East Duskbarrow Trail, there is the Shrine of the Archmagus where they must defeat Dreisang to unlock Sorcerer.<\/p>\n
