Hot of the success of her debut feature Promising<\/em> Young<\/em> Woman, writer,\u00a0director, and actress Emerald Fennell has been hired to pen\u00a0the script for a live-action feature film adaptation\u00a0of DC Comics<\/a><\/strong> character Zatanna for theaters.\u00a0Fennell recently made history by becoming the first woman to be nominated for the Academy Award for best director for a first feature and she also just took home a WGA award for best original screenplay.<\/p>\n

Fennell\u2019s Promising<\/em>\u00a0Young Woman<\/em>\u00a0tells the story of Cassie (Carey Mulligan), a determined\u00a0young woman who spends her nights confronting predatory men at clubs, ultimately seeking revenge for the wrongs committed against a friend of hers in college. The pitch-black comedy\/thriller\u00a0has been one of the most talked-about movies of 2020 and continues to sweep awards season. The film earned 5 Academy Award nominations, including three for Fennell and a Best Actress nomination for the film’s lead, Carey Mulligan. Fennell has also\u00a0served as showrunner on the second season of BBC America\u2019s\u00a0Killing Eve\u00a0<\/em>and as an actress, she\u00a0recently\u00a0portrayed\u00a0Camilla Parker Bowles on the fourth season of the Netflix series\u00a0The Crown.<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n

Despite being\u00a0lesser known than her other DC counterparts, Zatanna has been around in comics for almost as\u00a0long as other famous superheroes like Spider-Man<\/a>. Created by Gardner Fox and artist Murphy Anderson in 1964, Zatanna Zatara\u00a0is a magician with a variety of superpowers that she genetically inherited from her magician father Giovanni \u201cJohn\u201d Zatara.\u00a0Zatanna is a Homo Magi, a human born with the ability\u00a0to use\u00a0magic, and is\u00a0often seen casting spells by speaking them backward. She can manipulate\u00a0reality, move objects with her magic, and read\/alter people’s minds.<\/p>\n

The character has appeared alongside members of the Justice League, was retconned into\u00a0having had a childhood with Batman at one point, and has been\u00a0romantically involved with the supernatural detective and Sting lookalike, John Constantine. She has also been a part of the DC superhero team Justice League Dark<\/a>: a group that\u00a0deals with more supernatural phenomenons than the regular Justice League is used to handling.\u00a0Zatanna made her live-action debut as a reoccurring character in the final three seasons of\u00a0Smallville,\u00a0<\/em>where she was portrayed by actress\u00a0Serinda Swan.<\/p>\n

Variety reports the Zatanna film is set to be produced by J.J. Abrams’ company Bad Robot, which is also producing a John Constantine <\/em>show<\/a>\u00a0and a Justice Large\u00a0Dark<\/em> series for\u00a0HBO Max. Whether or not Zatanna will appear in those shows is unclear at the moment. No casting has been announced as of yet, but some fans have shown interest in the rumors that Game of Thrones<\/em> actress Emilia Clarke was being eyed for the role.<\/p>\n

As a powerful sorceress, Zatanna shows some similarities to Marvel’s very own sorcerer supreme, Doctor Strange. Perhaps DC is introducing their own magic-based character into their movie universe\u00a0in hopes that fans of Benedict Cumberbatch\u2019s Doctor Strange<\/a>\u00a0will be\u00a0interested in another mystical\u00a0comic book character. Marvel also saw some success going this route with\u00a0WandaVision<\/em>, whose lead character Wanda Maximoff, a.k.a. the Scarlet Witch, is set to\u00a0appear in the upcoming sequel\u00a0Doctor Strange in\u00a0the Multiverse of Madness.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n
