However, the open-world genre isn’t without its issues. Although games like\u00a0Skyrim<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0Grand Theft Auto V<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>show how great open-worlds can be, numerous games make the genre feel like it’s opting for a quantity over quality approach. For this reason, many gamers are beginning to revert to linear titles<\/a>, to play something more focused with a developer intend route. Linear versus open-world is a debate that will likely never be settled, though there are games that offer players a bit of both. Although the ten games on this list have tons of extra content available, if players just want to\u00a0blast through the main story, they can complete it in under 10 hours.<\/p>\n

The game was initially released all the way back in 1993 on the Game Boy, though it was remade by Grezzo in 2019 on the Nintendo Switch with a fantastic new art style.<\/p>\n

Provided that players don’t find themself getting stuck on too many puzzles or getting caught up in optional tasks like the trade quest, they can reach the end credits in around 9 hours.<\/p>\n

Homefront: The Revolution<\/a> <\/em>was released by Deep Silver in May 2016 on PC, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4. The game was developed by British company Dambuster Studios, which is the latest studio to take on\u00a0the task of developing the upcoming\u00a0Dead Island 2<\/a>.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

The game had a tough time impressing critics and received a brutally low Metascore of 48 on PlayStation 4.<\/p>\n

7 <\/span>Batman: Arkham City<\/h2>\n

Batman: Arkham City<\/a><\/em>‘s predecessor,\u00a0Arkham Asylum<\/a>,\u00a0<\/em>was given the difficult task of following the success of\u00a0the franchise’s latest film,\u00a0The Dark Knight. <\/em>Thankfully for the caped crusader,\u00a0Rocksteady Studios didn’t disappoint, as\u00a0Arkham Asylum\u00a0<\/em>impressed fans and critics with its excellent combat mechanics and immersive atmosphere<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Subsequently, Rocksteady Studios had a weight of expectations on their shoulders with the next game,\u00a0Batman: Arkham City.\u00a0<\/em>The London-based studio managed to exceed expectations by creating an amazing open-world for players to explore, fit with side quests and numerous Riddler tasks. Completing the game in full takes around 50 hours; a straight line to the finish, however, can be done in under 10.<\/p>\n

6 <\/span>Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes<\/h2>\n

One of the final games to be released by\u00a0Kojima Productions before its\u00a0public breakup with Konami<\/a>, 2014’s\u00a0Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>is a prologue to the critically acclaimed\u00a0Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain<\/em><\/a>, with many of the themes and gameplay ideas being present.<\/p>\n

The game was\u00a0initially planned to be nothing more than a mission in\u00a0Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain,\u00a0<\/em>but\u00a0Hideo Kojima decided to release it as a standalone product following delays to\u00a0The Phantom Pain.\u00a0<\/em>Most players will be able to complete\u00a0Ground Zeroes’<\/em>\u00a0main story\u00a0<\/em>in under 4 hours.<\/p>\n

Assassin’s Creed\u00a0<\/em>isn’t the only Ubisoft franchise that has become a cornerstone of the open-world genre, as\u00a0Far Cry<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>had been providing enormous maps for first-person shooter fans since\u00a0Far Cry 2\u00a0<\/em>hit stores back in 2008.<\/p>\n

Far Cry New Dawn<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>is the latest entry in the franchise. The game is a spin-off that has close ties story-wise<\/a> with the most recent main series game,\u00a0Far Cry 5<\/a>. <\/em>The game received lackluster reviews from critics, exemplified by its Metascores of 71, 73, and 75 on PlayStation 4, PC, and Xbox One, respectively.<\/p>\n

A Short Hike\u00a0<\/em>can be comfortably completed in around 2 hours. The game tasks players with gathering golden feathers around the small map,\u00a0which will help them reach this world’s peak.\u00a0Adam Robinson-Yu’s game was well-received by critics,\u00a0scoring 80 and 88 from\u00a0Metacritic on PC and Nintendo Switch. While that is the case, the game can be completed very quickly, as the final boss fight is accessible as soon as players complete the tutorial.<\/p>\n

The game’s excellent level of freedom and meticulous open-world structure took a leaf out of the original\u00a0The<\/em>\u00a0Legend of Zelda\u00a0<\/em>game’s book.\u00a0This is\u00a0one of the many reasons why\u00a0Breath of the Wild\u00a0<\/em>is regarded today as one of, if not the best open-world game of all time.<\/p>\n
