Although the success of the John Wick<\/strong><\/em><\/a> franchise can mostly be attributed to Keanu Reeves, it wouldn\u2019t exist without screenwriter Derek Kolstad, who\u00a0wrote the first movie and created the title character, who was named after his maternal grandfather. Kolstad has continued to work on the movie\u2019s sequels, but after his script for the third movie was rewritten by a couple of studio-appointed writers, Kolstad has revealed that he won\u2019t be involved with the fourth and fifth movies at all.<\/p>\n

Lionsgate announced last August that the fourth and fifth John Wick<\/em> movies would shoot back-to-back<\/a>, with the fourth movie\u2019s 2021 release date getting pushed back to 2022 to accommodate the COVID-19 pandemic. In a recent interview with Collider, when asked how far along he was with the scripts for the new John Wick<\/em> movies, Kolstad surprisingly replied, \u201cI\u2019m actually not involved in 4<\/em> and 5<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n

And what\u2019s more, it wasn\u2019t Kolstad\u2019s call. \u201cNo, it wasn\u2019t my decision,\u201d he explained. \u201cThe third one, I shared the credit with any number of people.\u00a0[Lionsgate] didn\u2019t have to come back to me, and so they didn\u2019t.\u201d The screenwriter clarified that he\u2019s still on good terms with directors Chad Stahelski and David Leitch<\/a>\u00a0and that he wishes the franchise the best: \u201cIt\u2019s personal, so I\u2019m never going to talk sh*t about John Wick<\/em>. I want this thing to survive and thrive… I don\u2019t know what\u2019s going to happen, but I\u2019m excited to see.\u201d<\/p>\n

While his involvement with the mainline\u00a0John Wick\u00a0<\/em>movies is coming to an end, Kolstad did tease that there are\u00a0going to be significant announcements\u00a0on the way regarding the long-awaited Continental-centric TV series<\/a> set in the in-universe hotel that accommodates contract killers. Kolstad said the show will be about \u201chow deep the world goes,\u201d including the origin stories of a few key supporting characters from the John Wick<\/em> films. There\u2019s also a spin-off movie in development titled Ballerina<\/em> that will follow a young female assassin\u2019s quest to avenge her murdered family. Live Free or Die Hard\u00a0<\/em>director Len Wiseman is signed on to\u00a0helm that one.<\/p>\n

Although he won\u2019t be writing another John Wick<\/em> movie any time soon, Kolstad is hardly struggling for work. He wrote a couple of episodes of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier<\/em> that\u2019ll air in the next few weeks and he\u2019s been tapped to write screen adaptations of the Hitman<\/em>, Just Cause<\/em>, and Splinter Cell<\/em> video game series. His latest movie, Nobody<\/em>, stars Better Call Saul<\/em>\u2019s Bob Odenkirk<\/a> as a mild-mannered suburbanite who proves himself to be a John Wick-style badass when his family is terrorized by criminals.<\/p>\n

As long as Reeves is still playing Baba Yaga<\/a> and director Stahelski remains at the helm, then there\u2019s still hope for the John Wick<\/em> franchise. But nobody understands this character better than his creator, so Lionsgate has left the next two movies with big shoes to fill by firing the series\u2019 architect.<\/p>\n

John Wick: Chapter 4<\/strong><\/em> is scheduled to be released on\u00a0May 27, 2022.<\/p>\n
