For almost as long as video games have been around, there have been critics to guide players towards the ones worth their time and money. Thanks to reviewing aggregator Metacritic, players can instantly see the general critic reaction to any given game. Many developers would love to see any of their games score above a 90 on the website.<\/p>\n

So when certain game developers consistently score high on Metacritic,<\/a> it is truly a sign of a developer who works hard to bring high-quality content to players. While some may be surprising, these developers have brought decades worth of great games – and hopefully decades more.<\/p>\n

10 <\/span>EA Sports<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

EA Sports isn’t exactly the first developer players think of when considering consistently great developers. However, within the early 2000s, EA Sports was putting out some of the most acclaimed sports titles on Metacritic.<\/p>\n

Their highest-rated game is currently\u00a0Madden NFL 2003<\/em><\/a>, scoring a 95 from 25 critics. Other games from EA Sports in the top 200 include\u00a0Madden NFL 2002<\/em>,\u00a0Madden NFL 2004<\/em>,\u00a0NCAA Football 2004<\/em><\/a>, and\u00a0NHL 2002<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n

9 <\/span>Neversoft<\/h2>\n

The developers of the popular\u00a0Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>series have had great success with critics.\u00a0Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 2\u00a0<\/em>remains the second-highest rated game of all time,<\/a> scoring a 98 from 19 critics.<\/p>\n

Across just three titles (also including\u00a0Pro Skater 3\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a04<\/em>), Neversoft has actually made Metacricic’s top 200 a total of 6 times.\u00a0Pro Skater 3\u00a0<\/em>appears twice, and\u00a0Pro Skater 2\u00a0<\/em>appears 3 times.<\/p>\n

8 <\/span>Visual Concepts<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Similar to EA Sports, Visual Concepts has enjoyed a great deal of acclaim for its sports titles, ranging from Football to Hockey games.\u00a0NFL 2K1\u00a0<\/em>remains the highest-rated, currently holding a 97 from 22 critics.<\/p>\n

NFL 2K3\u00a0<\/em>appears on the top 200 list twice, scoring a 93. Other titles on the top 200 include\u00a0NBA 2K1<\/em>,\u00a0NBA 2K2<\/em>, and\u00a0NHL\u00a0<\/em>2002<\/em>.<\/p>\n

7 <\/span>Naughty Dog<\/h2>\n

From the worldwide adventures of\u00a0Uncharted<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>to the post-apocalyptic nightmare\u00a0The Last of Us<\/em><\/a>, Naughty Dog is certainly no stranger to strong critic reviews.\u00a0Nathan Drake steals their top slot for the acclaimed sequel\u00a0Uncharted 2: Among Thieves<\/em>, currently at a 96 from 105 critics.<\/p>\n

Naughty Dog also sees the second-highest rated from 2020 for\u00a0The Last of Us Part II<\/em>,<\/a> rated at 93 from 120 critics.\u00a0The Last of Us<\/em>,\u00a0The Last of Us Remastered<\/em>,\u00a0Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End<\/em>, and\u00a0Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception\u00a0<\/em>also make the top 200.<\/p>\n

6 <\/span>BioWare<\/h2>\n

Combining creative world-building with intricate role-playing,<\/a> BioWare has developed a number of acclaimed games on Metacritic.\u00a0With a 96 from 98 critics,\u00a0Mass Effect<\/a> 2\u00a0<\/em>remains their most acclaimed title, which actually appears 3 times on the list.<\/p>\n

Both\u00a0Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0Mass Effect 3<\/em> also appear twice.\u00a0Baldur’s Gate<\/a>: Shadows of Amn\u00a0<\/em>places close to\u00a0Mass Effect 2<\/em>, with a 95 from 30 critics.<\/p>\n

5 <\/span>Valve<\/h2>\n

Throughout the years, Valve has consistently brought amazing titles and has a total of 8 games on Metacritic’s top 200 to prove it.\u00a0Half-Life<\/a> 2\u00a0<\/em>is considered their crowning achievement on the site, scoring 96 from 81 critics.<\/p>\n

The compilation\u00a0The Orange Box<\/em>, which features\u00a0Half-Life 2\u00a0<\/em>alongside\u00a0Team Fortress 2<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0Portal<\/em><\/a>, appears twice on the list. The original\u00a0Half-Life\u00a0<\/em>and the recent\u00a0Half-Life: Alyx\u00a0<\/em>both make the top 200, with\u00a0Portal 2\u00a0<\/em>making it 3 times total.<\/p>\n

4 <\/span>Capcom<\/h2>\n

Across multiple franchises, Capcom has proven to be one of gaming’s most creative and talented developers.<\/a> The classic horror title\u00a0Resident Evil<\/a> 4 <\/em>for the GameCube\u00a0is the most acclaimed on Metacritic, holding a 96 from 82 critics.<\/p>\n

Resident Evil 4\u00a0<\/em>for the PS2 also appears on the list, as does\u00a0Street Fighter IV<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>twice,\u00a0Street Fighter Alpha 3<\/em>,\u00a0and\u00a0Viewtiful Joe<\/em>. The 2019 remake of\u00a0Resident Evil 2<\/em> curiously makes the top 200, while the 1999 original doesn’t.<\/p>\n

3 <\/span>Konami<\/h2>\n

Konami largely has Hideo Kojima to thank for their abundant critical success<\/a> but also has other titles to boast. The sequel\u00a0Metal Gear Solid<\/a> 2: Sons of Liberty\u00a0<\/em>is their highest-ranking game, with a 96 from 42 critics. The\u00a0Metal Gear Solid\u00a0<\/em>franchise makes up a bulk of Konami’s titles here, including\u00a0Metal Gear Solid<\/em>,\u00a0Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence<\/em>,\u00a0Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots<\/em>, and 2 versions of\u00a0Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain<\/em>.<\/p>\n

The horror title\u00a0Castlevania<\/a>: Symphony of the Night\u00a0<\/em>and the sports titles\u00a0World Soccer Winning Eleven 6 International\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0World Soccer Winning Eleven 7 International\u00a0<\/em>also make the list.<\/p>\n

2 <\/span>Rockstar<\/h2>\n

A total of 9 different games from Rockstar make it on Metacritic’s top 200, 21 if you count duplicates.\u00a0Grand Theft Auto<\/a> IV\u00a0<\/em>is still the third-highest rated video game of all time, holding a 98 from 64 critics. The game appears twice alongside\u00a0Grand Theft Auto III<\/em>,\u00a0Grand Theft Auto: Vice City<\/em>, and\u00a0Red Dead Redemption<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n

It should come as no surprise that the developers who own the two most iconic franchises<\/a> in video gaming make their way to the top. 20 individual games hold slots on the top 200 list. Taking into account duplicates, that number goes up to 22.\u00a0The Legend of Zelda<\/a>: Ocarina of Time\u00a0<\/em>is to this day the most critically acclaimed video game of all time, holding a rare 99 from 22 critics. It appears twice alongside\u00a0The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess<\/em>.<\/p>\n
