Doom Eternal\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>has taken the gaming industry by storm, amassing a ton of critical praise and being considered one of the greatest first-person shooters of all time. Not ready to hang up its BFG’s and call it a day, id Software has released not one, but two extra DLC packs for\u00a0Doom Eternal<\/em><\/a> to ensure that the bloodlust and carnage can continue to live on.<\/p>\n

With\u00a0Doom Eternal: The Ancient Gods Part 2<\/em>\u00a0recently released to huge success, many players are wondering if this marks the end of new content for the game. Although this second DLC package does wrap up its storyline in a nice, bloody bow, this does not entirely rule out future updates to the base game in the future.\u00a0While nothing is confirmed as of yet,\u00a0Doom Eternal’s<\/em> executive producer confirming future updates<\/a> to the game teases the potential of more good things to come.<\/p>\n

Both the 2016\u00a0Doom\u00a0<\/em>reboot and its sequel\u00a0<\/a>Doom Eternal<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>have been applauded as some of the most polished shooters of the generation. The brutal, fast-paced gameplay that encourages players to stay on the move and make good use of a huge arsenal has become extremely addicting for action fans. It is such a successful new approach to first-person shooting that its influence can be seen seeping into other fast-paced action games like\u00a0Ghostrunner<\/em>.<\/p>\n

As\u00a0previously stated, the ending for\u00a0<\/a>The Ancient Gods Part 2<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>seemed to wrap up the current narrative of\u00a0Doom Eternal<\/em>\u00a0(and its 2016 predecessor)\u00a0<\/em>quite nicely. However, even with that story being concluded, this doesn’t necessarily mean that there is nothing else that can be done. This is a work of fiction after all, with wiggle room always being available to the creative team to come up with new material and possibilities for what to explore next.<\/p>\n

Therefore, just because\u00a0The Ancient Gods\u00a0<\/em>has reached its end, doesn’t mean other avenues can’t be explored within the\u00a0Doom\u00a0<\/em>universe. There will always be more gateways from hell opening up and demons to blast away, so the Doom Slayer’s work is never truly done. Perhaps a new threat emerges from the many plot threads established in\u00a0Doom Eternal<\/em><\/a>, or a more unconventional approach is taken with an unexpected character from prior entries. Even if not story based DLC, id Software can always launch more multiplayer game modes or added bonuses to the main campaign for players to enjoy. Whether big or small, there is still potential for avenues to go next.<\/p>\n

On the flip side of the coin, however, too much of anything can become excessive, even with a property as universally acclaimed as\u00a0Doom<\/em>. Bearing that in mind, id Software may feel it more wise to let Doom Guy hang up his guns and chainsaw, providing the series with some downtime for the next little while. Considering the sales milestone\u00a0Doom Eternal\u00a0<\/em>recently hit<\/a>, fans should rest assured that the classic shooter franchise is far from over and still remains a lucrative IP in the gaming industry.<\/p>\n

While these new DLC additions to\u00a0<\/a>Doom Eternal<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>have been a welcome bonus to an already excellent package, perhaps it is better to stop merely adding on top of an existing product. It may be more beneficial and worthwhile for both the developer and fans of id Software to return to the drawing board to plan out a proper third installment to be released in the future. This way, the team can properly build upon all the core concepts and mechanics introduced in\u00a0Doom Eternal\u00a0<\/em>instead of simply fine tuning them in-between smaller DLC releases.<\/p>\n

As fantastic as\u00a0Doom Eternal\u00a0<\/em>and its accompanying DLC packs<\/a> have been, there can only be so much more done with pre-established ideas until a sense of repetition begins to set in for audiences. Many franchises have taken years off in between mainline entries to fine tune the experience, with\u00a0Doom\u00a0<\/em>itself being no exception to the rule. If anything, these breaks have been entirely positive for the series as a whole, with the\u00a012 year difference between\u00a0Doom 3\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0Doom (2016)\u00a0<\/em>resulting in a completely fresh spin on the franchise. From here, the four years until\u00a0Doom Eternal\u00a0<\/em>released in 2020 only resulted in even more improvements and creativity for what is often considered the superior of the two new\u00a0Doom\u00a0<\/em>games.<\/p>\n

Players are understandably hooked to the frantic and gleefully gruesome combat in these new\u00a0Doom\u00a0<\/em>games<\/a>, and while ripping and tearing demons is always a pleasure, perhaps it would be better to let id Software have some time to refresh before more content arrives. Whether this is in the form of more DLC or a brand new game entirely, time will tell what horrors await for gamers and the Doom Slayer in the years ahead.<\/p>\n
