One of Stardew Valley’s<\/em><\/a> core mechanics is building\u00a0relationships\u00a0with NPCs. From romantic connections to neighborly bonds, the player can grow close to almost everyone in town and go from being an outsider to a real member of the community. The easiest way to win villagers’ hearts is through generosity. Giving gifts, running errands posted on the bulletin board, and simply talking to people will raise their affection.<\/p>\n

Some of Pelican Town’s villagers, once befriended, are just as generous towards the player. Many will send recipes for home-cooked meals, or trinkets the player might appreciate. Here are some of the best friends the villagers can make early on in their playthrough.<\/p>\n

10 <\/span>Caroline<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Befriending Caroline is the only way for the player to get the Tea Bush crafting recipe. This allows them to grow and harvest tea leaves, which they can brew into green tea using a keg. This unique drink increases the player’s maximum energy. At three and seven hearts respectively, she also shares her recipes<\/a> for Parsnip Soup and Vegetable Medley, simple and restorative meals.<\/p>\n

Cooking some Fish Tacos or Tropical Curry is a great way to win Caroline’s friendship. She also loves summer spangles, and\u2014surprise, surprise\u2014green tea.<\/p>\n

9 <\/span>Robin<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Once she and the player become good friends, Robin will teach the player some carpentry secrets, allowing them to decorate their home with Flute Blocks and Drum Blocks. At seven hearts, she’ll share her recipe for Pumpkin Soup, which increases both defense and luck. She may also send the player 50 pieces of wood.<\/p>\n

Robin’s favorite gifts include goat cheese and fresh peaches. She also loves a homemade plate of spaghetti. Find her in her shop most days, or the Stardrop Saloon in the evenings.<\/p>\n

8 <\/span>George<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

The recipes\u00a0that George\u00a0sends the player, Fried Eel and Spicy Eel, both provide Luck boosts. This buff proves useful in almost every aspect of the game, from fishing to foraging to mining. He also may send the player 35 pieces of stone.<\/p>\n

Though\u00a0might seem like a grumpy old coot, George isn’t actually too hard to befriend. Gifting him a few leeks foraged in the spring will remind\u00a0George that people do care about him. A plate of fried mushrooms will also\u00a0soften him up.<\/p>\n

7 <\/span>Willy<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

While most NPCs share two cooking recipes at most, Willy has four that he sends the player at three, five, seven, and nine friendship hearts.\u00a0Unsurprisingly, all of his “ol’ pappy’s” recipes boost the Fishing skill, useful for completing the community center fish tank or catching legendary fish<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Willy’s favorite gifts\u00a0can be\u00a0difficult to come by, as they include hard-to-catch fish, diamonds, and iridium bars. However, he also loves to receive a bottle of mead or a homegrown pumpkin.<\/p>\n

6 <\/span>Clint<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

In his letters, Clint sends the player a copper, iron, or gold bar. During Year 1, these can prove to be invaluable crafting resources.\u00a0Clint also sends his recipes for Algae Soup and Bean Hotpot. The former is a great way to convert a plentiful ingredient into useful energy, while the latter boosts maximum energy and only requires a few green beans to make.<\/p>\n

Clint’s favorite gifts can be found in the mines<\/a>: gemstones, metal bars, and Omni Geodes. He also loves homemade Artichoke Dip and Fiddlehead Risotto.<\/p>\n

5 <\/span>Pam<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Pam’s letters sometimes just include a mug of beer. However, she may also send the player a battery pack, useful in crafting. Even better, she sometimes sends Energy Tonic, which restores 500 energy and 200 health.\u00a0She\u00a0also send the player recipes for Cheese Cauliflower and Stuffing. The latter’s defense buff proves especially useful for fighting monsters.<\/p>\n

Pam’s good favor can be easily won by buying her a drink. However, if the player doesn’t want to enable her alcoholism, she also loves fresh parsnips, Glazed Yams, and Parsnip Soup.<\/p>\n

4 <\/span>Emily<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Once befriended, Emily\u00a0may send the player cloth and wool. These are hard to find early in the game, and the player can use them to make new clothes<\/a> or build a mill. Emily will\u00a0also give the player her recipes for Salad and Red Plate, meals that require few ingredients but restore lots of energy.<\/p>\n

Considering her spiritual side, it’s no wonder that Emily counts crystals among her favorite gifts. Dig around in the mines for awhile, and the player is sure to find gifts Emily will love.<\/p>\n

3 <\/span>The Wizard<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Though he doesn’t send any recipes, the\u00a0items\u00a0the Wizard sends in the mail are pretty valuable, including gemstones and purple mushrooms. The latter can be used to restore large amounts of health and energy, making them invaluable for dangerous mining expeditions. At four hearts, the player can also access his basement to change their appearance.<\/p>\n

To win over this mysterious figure<\/a>, try bringing him Void Essence or Solar Essence, dropped by monsters in the mines. He can be found in his tower all day throughout all seasons.<\/p>\n

2 <\/span>Gus<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Once befriended,\u00a0the proprietor of the Stardrop Saloon sends\u00a0the player free food in the mail. This is especially useful early in the game, when the player expends lots of energy chopping trees and breaking rocks. Additionally, some of these meals increase Foraging or Fishing skills, or provide extra energy.<\/p>\n

The way to Gus’s heart lies with a fresh orange, or fine meals\u00a0like Tropical Curry or Escargot. What’s more, he’s easy to find. Drop by the Stardrop Saloon for a quick chat and to offer a gift.<\/p>\n

1 <\/span>Linus<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Though he may be a bit of an outsider, Linus is one of the best friends the player can have. Once the player earns his trust, he teaches them his recipe for\u00a0Wild Bait<\/a>,\u00a0massively increasing\u00a0fishing potential. He’ll\u00a0also send the player fresh fish, sashimi, or maki rolls in the mail, in addition to the recipes for sashimi and fish tacos.<\/p>\n

Linus isn’t too hard to befriend, as he\u00a0likes foraged items\u00a0and loves desert fruits. Retrieving his blackberry basket will earn the player additional friendship points.<\/p>\n
