In The Falcon and the Winter Soldier<\/em><\/strong><\/a>, Sam Wilson is the new tech-savvy superhero with modern-day problems while Bucky Barnes is a bit of an out-of-place old-timer relic. In real life, it\u2019s actually the opposite, as the character who is better known as the Winter Soldier didn\u2019t exist until comic book writer Ed Brubaker and artist Steve Epting introduced him in 2005.<\/p>\n

Whereas the first part of\u00a0The Falcon and the Winter Soldier<\/em>\u00a0equation made his Marvel Comics debut in 1969 as one of the first African-American superheroes, Bucky Barnes was as good as dead<\/a> for over 60 years until Brubaker revived him as the Winter Soldier. His idea was one of many Marvel creative gold mines that went on to be fully featured as a mainstay character in the MCU, though, like many comic book creators, Brubaker feels like he got the short end of the stick for his contribution.<\/p>\n

In a recent entry published in his personal newsletter, Brubaker expressed some of his mixed feelings\u00a0about seeing his Winter Soldier become an MCU star<\/a> with his own Disney Plus exclusive.\u00a0Brubaker said that although he\u2019s very happy to see Sebastian Stan get more screen time, \u201cat the same time, for the most part, all Steve Epting and I have gotten for creating the Winter Soldier and his storyline is a \u2018thanks\u2019 here or there.\u201d This is something that has become increasingly hard for him after penning the traumatized Winter Soldier under Marvel Comics employment terms.<\/p>\n

Despite being somewhat unhappy with the compensation he received\u00a0for one of Disney\u2019s current money-making intellectual properties, Brubaker is quite grateful for his time working for Marvel Comics, claiming it was \u201cone of the happiest times of\u00a0[his] career\u201d and that it led to more people being familiar with the rest of his work. He still assured his followers that he\u2019ll definitely be tuning in to watch The Falcon and the Winter Soldier<\/em><\/a>, asking politely for people to not send him any spoilers alongside the waves of requests he already gets for his comments on the show.<\/p>\n

Even though Brubaker did get a small cameo in Captain America: The Winter Soldier<\/em> as a way to honor his contribution to the current pop culture phenomenon that is the MCU, that hardly appeases the author\u2019s feelings about missing out on bigger earnings for it, although he is the first to recognize that \u201cwork for hire is what it is.\u201d Over the years, proper recognition for the writers and artists behind many beloved comic book stars has become a contentious topic, with the legal proceedings filed by the legendary Jack Kirby\u2019s<\/a> estate being the prime example of it.<\/p>\n

The issue has gained far more prominence after Marvel Studios fell under Disney\u2019s corporate umbrella, as the company even has ongoing legal disputes with Bill Nye The Science Guy<\/a>. At least, like Brubaker himself recognizes, creative personnel nowadays are much more aware of the nature of their work, so – while still a very relatable feeling – everyone knows what they’re signing up for, unlike their counterparts many decades ago.<\/p>\n

The Falcon and the Winter Soldier<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0is currently available as a Disney Plus exclusive.<\/p>\n
