Scarlett Johansson, who has played Natasha Romanoff\/Black Widow<\/a><\/strong> in eight Marvel movies to date, recently stated that she first doubted that 2012\u2019s\u00a0The Avengers<\/b><\/a>\u00a0<\/em>would be a hit. The Oscar-nominated actress noted the exact moment when the cast realized that they were making something special.<\/p>\n

Johansson first appeared as Black Widow over ten years ago in Jon Favreau’s\u00a0Iron Man 2<\/em>. In the film, Romanoff was an undercover spy who posed as Tony Stark\u2019s assistant. The movie star wasn\u2019t Favreau\u2019s first choice to play the role. Emily Blunt was forced to turn down the part due to scheduling conflicts with Jack Black\u2019s\u00a0Gulliver’s Travels.\u00a0<\/em>Johansson then took the role and soon became an integral part of the MCU. Following Iron Man 2<\/em>, she starred alongside\u00a0Robert Downey Jr.<\/a>, Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, and Chris Hemsworth\u2019s Thor in Joss Whedon\u2019s\u00a0The Avengers.<\/em><\/p>\n

Despite earning rave reviews from critics and grossing over $1 billion worldwide, Johansson wasn\u2019t initially confident that the first Avengers<\/em> film<\/a> would work. The 36-year-old Marvel star told\u00a0The Gentlewoman\u00a0<\/em>that she was skeptical after hearing Whedon\u2019s pitch of the film. \u201cThe thought of all of us together in our superhero costumes sounded like it was going to be a disaster,\u201d said Johansson. \u201cNot a disaster, but, like, What is this? What\u00a0is<\/em>\u00a0this?\u201d<\/p>\n

Johansson sensed that the film would resonant with fans after they filmed the iconic scene where Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk<\/a>, Iron Man, Hawkeye, Black Widow, Captain America, and Thor come together to battle in New York City. \u201cI remember doing that 360 shot, and we\u2019re standing in the rubble of Grand Central or whatever, of this alien onslaught, and all of us are ready, like: Here we go, this is it,\u201d she said. After seeing the playback, Johansson realized that they were making something special. \u201cI think that was the moment that all of us, finally, after six months of shooting, was, \u2018Oh, this is going to work. I think this is going to work.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Despite falling to her death in\u00a0Avengers: Endgame\u00a0–<\/em>\u00a0a decision the character made in order for the team to retrieve the Soul Stone as part of their mission to undo Thanos’ decimation in Infinity War\u00a0<\/em>– Johansson\u2019s Romanoff will be featured in a standalone Black Widow<\/em> film<\/a> this summer.\u00a0Black Widow <\/em>was directed by\u00a0Cate Shortland, whose previous credits include the historical drama film titled Lore,\u00a0<\/em>and will take place following the events of\u00a0Captain America: Civil War<\/em>, which concluded with Romanoff going on the run after aiding a fugitive Captain America.\u00a0<\/em>The\u00a0highly-anticipated film will focus on Romanoff\u2019s family and history as a Russian spy. The cast includes Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova<\/a>, David Harbour as Red Guardian, and Rachel Weisz as Melina Vostokoff.\u00a0Godzilla vs. Kong<\/em>\u2019s Eric Pearson penned the script.<\/p>\n

The $200 million priced blockbuster was originally slated to come out in May 2020 and start Phase 4 in the MCU. Due to the pandemic, the film\u2019s theatrical release has been delayed numerous times. Disney recently announced that Emma Stone\u2019s\u00a0Cruella<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0Black Widow<\/em>\u00a0will be released simultaneously in theatres<\/a> and on Disney\u00a0Plus this summer.<\/p>\n

Black Widow<\/b><\/em>\u00a0<\/strong>is scheduled to be released in theaters and on\u00a0Disney Plus on July 9, 2021.<\/p>\n
